So, smiler is telling me that the proposed starting pay for teachers in Wisconsin as of this new budget is going to be $20,000.00. WHAT? I made more money than that working in fucking electronics at a Wal-mart three or so years ago. Since when has starting pay for someone with at least a 4 year degree been 20,000.00? I don't even really have a high school diploma and I could easily do that.

That was my income as a Square-Enix QA tester.

So ask yourself, would you rather be a Square-Enix QA tester, or a school teacher in Wisconsin?

(Kind of a false choice since to get hired as a Square-Enix QA tester you had to demonstrate a solid grasp of grammar and punctuation.)

The most politically savvy thing the Democrats could do right now is start pushing for a salary cut for members of Congress.

Of course (1) they don't actually want pay cuts, (2) last November notwithstanding most of them have pretty secure jobs, and (3) it would be more politically advantageous to do it a year from now.

Oh, and also, (4) they're Democrats.  They're not very good at the whole politics thing.

Rick Ungar nails it in Forbes.  Not only has Walker blown his own political career, he's probably singlehandedly undone all the inroads the GOP's made with union members since the Reagan Administration.  I've already said that the weak GOP field makes me think Obama's got an easy road to reelection, but stuff like this is going to have a ripple effect across federal and state elections.

Yeah, the 2010 elections were good to the Tea Party.  But what the Tea Party doesn't seem to have understood is that the reason for this is that voters are sick of the political establishment, not that they actually want to, say, eliminate unions and public education.

In fairness, the Tea Party hasn't deviated one whit from its platform; anyone who's surprised by this stuff was clearly not paying attention last year.  Or for the thirty years prior.

Thing is, in the hands of somebody more competent than Walker, this would have been a major victory: the unions agreed to all the cuts he asked for, and if he'd left it at that he'd have come out smelling like a rose.

The tea party movement is interesting. On one hand, it's been stunningly effective at what it's needed to do for the republicans thus far. Take a group of americans who are largely fed up with republicans due to 12 years of persistent failure and make them side with republicans again by focusing their anger and hatred towards heavy taxes and a raising deficit, while painting the cause of their economic woes as 'wealth redistribution', 'socialism', and my personal favorite, 'government handouts'. (aka, 'welfare', the thing that does not actually exist in the way most americans actually think it exists)

On the other hand, it shows the incredible lack of long-term thinking that went into this plan, as now that the tea partiers have a political base they are blocking tax increases to the super wealthy, blocking regulation on big business, blocking tax reform for big oil, cutting social services used by everyone (public education!) and going after unions, who hire blue collar workers, the same blue collar workers who elected them in the first place.

I don't see how they expect to sustain their political power like this.

Why would the people that fell for the Tea Party plot in the first place suddenly realize it was all for naught? As long as there's someone to keep making empty promises there'll always be a group willing to follow.

Why would the people that fell for the Tea Party plot in the first place suddenly realize it was all for naught?

Why would people who voted for Bush in '00 and '04 vote for Obama in '08?

Because however great this shit may sound on paper, in real life it results in the destruction of the economy and the flooding of major cities.

And yeah, I'm endlessly frustrated by people who drank the tea and are now only starting to realize those guys were serious about that whole "let's get rid of every single federal program" thing.  But I'm also endlessly frustrated by the fucking Democrats, so there's plenty of blame to go around for why the lunatics are currently running the asylum.

http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt-and-politics/article_8747fa04-4a74-11e0-8e6b-001cc4c03286.html

Basically the republicans decided that they were going to strip fiscal elements out of the bill and just pass it. Of course, it takes longer to go from Illinois to Madison than it does for Republicans to ram a bill through two houses. So guess which state doesn't let its workers collectively bargain?  :whoops:

Of course the Dems being in the senate wouldn't have changed anything, but it is funny that the bill passed through one part of the government with no representation from the other party.

Human nature is not to back down even after you realize what a colossally big mistake you have made.

They've just gone and reminded the working class that the Republican Party doesn't give a shit about them.  This "victory" is about the biggest political fuckup they could possibly have made.

To be fair, the american people don't seem to realize that unions are on their side, so maybe the people who see that the tea party is doing what they promised are just even more encouraged to vote for them again.

I surprised on how fast mainstream republicans realized that they've completely alienated the unions, and just completely turned against them. I hope this gangrenous limb known as the tea party just keeps on trucking without the republicans ever realizing the need to chop it off.

So what is Big O's rationale for undoing the only policy promise he'd kept?
