Hi I stopped reading this thread when I noticed Shinra was making a long reply to the rape thing.

Are we done yet?

...really don't know quite how to respond to Shinra at this point, except to say "You should probably choose your words very carefully in this conversation."

I was trying, but as I've proven time and time again I don't seem to have the ability to word things without drawing the wrong conclusions. :\

Meanwhile:

Yeah, for all everyone's mad now by the time election season comes round again all of this will be forgotten

One: People don't forget losing their jobs or benefits.
Two: The primaries are less than a year off.

The GOP's pulled a lot of shit that initially made people angry but was forgotten by election time.  This is not one of those times.

I don't know. I don't feel like the Democrats are doing enough to leverage this position into political higher ground. It seems, if anything, democratic congressmen are trying to distance themselves from the union battles, just like they've spent the last two years distancing themselves from raising taxes on the rich and regulating wall street. I've never felt more like our elected officials are corporate stooges than I have the last two years, and at this point I'm not convinced that the Democrats - Obama included - aren't stumbling through one blunder after the next on purpose, because the money's gotten too good not to.

I don't disagree.  I don't think Democrats are going to win in '12 on their own merits, I think they're going to win because the Republicans have screwed up so badly.  Just like '06.

I think people are making the mistake of thinking I'm being idealistic in drawing the conclusion that the Dems will win next year.  Far from it -- I am being utterly cynical.  They're not going to win because they deserve to, or because they did the right thing, or even the politically savvy thing.  They're going to win because the Republicans were so flagrant in their attacks on the middle class that only the party faithful could possibly ignore it.

I understand the whole slippery slope argument, but can we please get some truth in media legislation like the rest of the world has?

Roast Beef, as I may have mentioned, got his schooling in PRECISELY THAT SHIT.

He is not taking it well. He was all going Jack Ripper on some journalism students. He was all, WHY DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND PHYSICS!?

I pointed him to this 3PS comic that I felt helped make sense of this.
Not coincidentally, I am trying really hard to power a telephone with my own energies. (Please do not tell anyone else)

The funniest part about those stats is that Atlantis is the most likely bit to be true.

SALT LAKE CITY (CN) - Police officers responded to a family's complaint that their diabetic son may have been in danger from driving without taking his medicine by running him off the road into an interstate highway median and shooting him to death, the family says.

Municipal corporation.  I recall some stories as to why Young and Co. chose to use that technically accurate but ambiguous name instead of the more standard "City of", but they're kind of insulting.

There are other versions of that story floating around that state that the kid was actually acting aggressively, ramming fire trucks and driving like a madman, then tried to run over the cops.

Not that that justifies use of excessive force, just saying there are other versions out there.

That said, this is the only copy of the story that seemed to mention the dashboard cam, so I'm actually leaning towards the truth possibly being closer to the article Lyrai posted rather than the others I've seen.

Apparently the UK internets folk are all atwitter about - get this - a house that happens to look like Hitler.

I'm not sure what my reaction to this is supposed to be, but all I can do is laugh my ass off.

So the Wisconsin state supreme court has ruled twice so far that the Budget Repair Bill cannot be passed as a law. And now this is the second time the Wisconsin GOP is ignoring a court order by saying that it is a law and is in effect. The republicans also wrote an apology to the judge who has been in charge of this case so far.

Quote
The Republican Party of Dane County sent out a press release on March 29th criticizing Judge Maryann Sumi for holding up the publication of Governor Scott Walker’s collective bargaining reform bill. Upon further reflection we’d like to apologize for not understanding her point of view.

Sure, Governor Walker’s bill is unquestionably constitutional, increases worker’s rights and helps local government balance budgets without having to fire public workers. The Wisconsin state legislature consulted with their non-partisan parliamentarian to make sure that the passage of the bill followed the rules of the Senate and Assembly. But this isn’t about the law, is it?

The Republican Party of Dane County recognizes that Judge Sumi is a leftist living in Dane County. Her friends are leftists living in Dane County. Her son is a left wing activist in Dane County. She goes to cocktail parties held by leftists in Dane County. She shops at organic gourmet food shops run by leftists living in Dane County. If she were to enforce the law of Wisconsin and do what was in the best interest of the people of Wisconsin, she’d be exiled from her lifestyle. She’d lose her friends!

The leadership of the Republican Party of Dane County have all made the choice to stand against the Dane County elite. We accept that Left feels righteous vandalizing our homes and keying our cars. It's only fair. We disagree based upon logic and principle. That is intolerable! We prioritize the Constitution and the well being of the people of Wisconsin over foie gras at cocktail parties. That’s the choice we made. We respect Judge Sumi’s decision to live her life with the rich diversity that liberals cherish.

I'm not sure how anyone could support the Republicans in the state. Even before this they have been acting like a bunch of spoiled kids since they gained the majority, and they are continuing to do so even when they are ignoring court rulings. My guess is that their egos are so inflated that they can't just go back and revote on the bill, since this is all about open meeting laws that they violated.
