I dunno about uncanny - it seems to be the only culture other than some fringe paramilitary and debutante groups that acknowledges its own gross inhumanity and actively celebrates it. The more mean, vitriolic and critical the designer or model is, the more they are respected FOR being mean, vitriolic and critical.
High Fashion is really nothing more than the monastic pursuit of impossible perfection. There's something almost Zen-like and respectable about it, even if the results are utterly horrifying to those outside the cult. I can understand the appeal of treating one's body this way - I don't think it's good, obviously, but I can understand it.
It also means that, no matter how scandalized we may be by this whole CG passing off thing, the fashionistas probably view it as desecration of a goddam idol, a trivialization of everything they'e fucking LIVED for. So let's take our amateur indignation aside and watch some very thin people get into a slapfight.
