That second one Classic mentioned is BIG. The Jewish lobby in the US is wealthy [cue obviously racist comment], very well-organized, and has by-and-large been a kneejerk supporter of anything Israeli. Of course they're removed from the day-to-day conditions, but there's no indication that attitudes would change that much if a huge number of American Jews suddenly spent six months in Israel.
The more detailed picture is a bit more nuanced, with a number of prominent American Jewish groups (and even plenty of Israeli citizens) calling out the Israeli government for their actions, but they've never had a big enough voice to gain control over the debate (though they've come close sometimes). Worse, the demographics are going badly: The only two demographics with high birth rates in Israel are poorer Arab Israeli citizens and extremist orthodox Jewish sects.
Which is to say, sooner or later - perhaps in a generation or two - the slow fuse that's been burning for a while now will finally reach ignition and this will all come to a very very bad end.
