Remember our old Monsanto thread?
Order 81. Under this mandate, Iraq's commercial farmers must now buy "registered seeds." These are normally imported by Monsanto, Cargill and the World Wide Wheat Company. Unfortunately, these registered seeds are "terminator" seeds, meaning "sterile."

Isn't the argument against gay marriage basically appeal to tradition? I'm no logic expert, but that's a pretty fallacious argument since I last checked.
Also, I :wuv: that new video. Except I'd rather be something smarter than a stegosaurus.

Jesus, that's like the RIAA meets agriculture.

Fortunately, these registered seeds are "funtime" seeds, meaning "Iraqi farmers get to buy a fresh, new batch of seeds every year!"

Aw. I kept expecting some miracle explanation of how they'd manage the logistics of such a thing. You know, other than "We'll use a website! It'll be easy!"

I wonder if it's going to be harder to get a second free Dr Pepper than to vote twice in the upcoming US elections.

Pretty sure it's a "print out this coupon and give it to your local grocery clerk" thing.  Coke and Pepsi used to give away metric tonnes of soda when they had the whole bottlecap giveaway thing, before they realized that asking for personal information over the internet was a great way to make people not want your free shit.

Actually, my all-time favourite 'Chinese Democracy' story was the one about how another band (I think it was The Offspring, but don't quote me on that) was going to release an album in the early 00's called 'Chinese Democracy - You Snooze, You Lose'. The label quashed it for fear of the legal repercussions, but man that would have been gas.

That, and the fact that the title is just as ironic ten years later*.

*this does not mean the album itself will be any good. If it actually is released. Colour me skeptical.

Pre-release versions of the album have been on the tubes for years now. Chinese Democracy is a damn good album, shockingly enough. It does pale when compared to Appetite for Destruction, but then again I think that AoD is up in the top five albums of all time, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Most of the irony of the title comes from the fact that nobody really thinks it will ever truly exist.

Oh, come on. Axl not only got cornrows and a face full of botox, but he's stuck with both through thick and thin. How can it be anything but brilliant? You know, unless his cocaine induced wail reached some kind of theoretical peak fifteen years ago or something insane like that.

Monsanto is why I wanted to become a Biologist, to stop things like that from happening.

Now that I'm older I'm leaning towards just being a terrorist.

Order 81 fits into this revolutionary program, and it is quite diabolical upon closer inspection.

Oh, it's diabolical at a long distance too. After all the other fuckups, the government wants a chokehold on what Iraqis eat. That's not simple capitalistic ruthlessness, this kind of shit is what scifi writers would think of to indicate the Galactic Empire is secretly under the control of the Pod People and is about to exterminate all of humanity.

That I've heard of no protests against this show that our generation is one car wreck of suck.

From Wonkette as well: Someone really limp-wristedly and apologetically tries to arrest Karl Rove on stage.  Also he tries to complain that John Kerry said something mean and everyone laughs at him.

102's pretty damned likely to pass.  They pulled a similar one in '04, and it failed, but only by a few points and only because the language was so vague it could be construed to deny benefits to unmarried straight couples.  They've simplified it this time around.

We got a "Yes on 102" flyer in the mail the other day that had smiling couples on it.  Brad said, "Aww, look how happy they are because they're straight!  They should have one that shows a gay couple and they look mad."

Yeah, the state stuff's not looking so good.  I'm pretty sure this is going to pass, and if McCain only pulls off a single-digit win here I'll be surprised.

There are still a few props I haven't decided on.  To my fellow Arizonans, so far I've marked 101-200, all "No"; haven't made up my mind on the rest.  Leaning no for 201, 202, and 300.  Again, if you're interested in a more detailed rundown I can give one.

The political heavyweights here will probably point and laugh at me for this, but when I don't know what the fuck a measure is about I look at who's for and against it and just go by that. Generally, anything republicans want is bad. I don't quite give the opposite treatment to everything democrats want, but by and large they're far less likely to support something that allows corporations to embezzle all our money while burning gays at the stake. Whether the measures they support will lead us all to a rainbow butterscotch meadow full of bunnies is up in the air, but I'll take "not evil" in lieu of "ultimate political party of perfect energy", especially when the alternative is "totally fucking evil".

Actually, Phoenix, that's pretty much the first thing I do.  I'm not a lawyer, so it's easier for me to understand the arguments for and against than the text of the law itself.  If, say, a bill is backed by the Sierra Club and Audubon Society, I'll probably vote for it; if it's backed by Philip Morris, I'll probably vote against.

There are other tipoffs -- if the supporters of a measure all say "paid for by [some vaguely-named organization you've never heard of]", that means the sponsor of the bill is paying big money to promote it -- and when someone's sinking that kind of money in trying to convince voters to support a proposition, my instinct is that it's against the voters' interest.  And at this point when I see the words "consumer choice" I automatically assume that's Republican doublespeak for "cut programs and regulation" (funny how they're such big fans of the word "choice" except when it comes to giving women control of their own bodies).

It's more of a guideline than a hard-and-fast rule, of course.  There are several bills I'm uncertain on.  One that's a real dilemma is about giving more leverage to home buyers who want to sue builders -- there's a lot of talk in the "con" section about "helping trial lawyers" (typical Republican doublespeak for "gives consumers more rights"), but I heard former AG Grant Woods on the radio the other day and he made a pretty good case against it.  He's a Republican but a pretty reasonable moderate in my experience and a damned good lawyer.  I'm still on the fence about it, but I'm leaning "no" now.  (Which I guess is a good conservative-in-the-traditional-sense response: if neither side makes a satisfactory case, err toward "No.")
