They finally figured out who killed John Walsh's kid.

Good job, guys.  He's only brought it up every night on national television for almost thirty years.

I read that one earlier today, McDohl.  Did you catch that part where those rooms are in special education schools?

Okay, you hit Timmy.  You get to spend four hours in prison quality isolation.  Padded walls and steel door included.  What.  The.  Fuck.

Oh, look it says Georgia in the little location thing. Shocking

Quote
The Alpine Program's attorney, Phil Hartley, said Jonathan's actions leading up to his suicide did not suggest the boy was "serious" about killing himself. Jonathan's actions were an "effort to get attention," Hartley said.

"This is a program designed for students with severe emotional disabilities and problems," he said. "It is a program which frequently deals with students who use various methods of getting attention, avoiding work."

At my elementary school, we had a room like that next to the SPED room.  They put kids in there, but not for four hours at a time (that I know of).  It was pretty fucked up.

I may have told this one before, but.

My mother is a very gentle and happy person, firmly optimistic, always looking for the bright side in things.  She's taught in public school, and worked with special needs students, for nearly 30 years in various schools in multiple districts, K-12.  She also put both me and my sister through public (and later private) school and had to deal with things from the parent's end as well, twice.

A few years ago, while having lunch, the conversation turned to school and I asked her what she thought, in all her experience, needed to be done to fix the problems with America's public school system.

Without so much as blinking, she said "Burn the whole fucking thing down."

Without so much as blinking, she said "Blow it all up."

...and just to pretend I'm actually contributing to the conversation: Had something like that happen to me once, although instead of a padded room for a couple hours it was the copier room near the school office for most of eighth grade.  "How do we keep this kid from getting picked on by a dozen other students?" "Why don't we confine him to a single room and have him teach himself?" "Brilliant!"  Which is right up there with "I'll duct tape this child (not me, for the record) to his chair because he won't stop acting out in class."

I'm trying to figure out why anyone would think that doing any of this is a good idea but I keep falling back to "maintain the status quo by any means necessary," which is far too depressing mostly because it makes the most sense.

I had a teacher do that to someone in my 5th grade class.  It was duct tape keeping his chair as close to the desk as possible.  It's up there with the event in 8th grade where the band directer walked up to one of the trumpet line, grabbed the back of his hair in his hand, pulled back as hard as he could and put his face to the kid saying "Are you going to stop talking so I can direct?"

Pulling that sort of shit every once in a while is pretty much necessary for any teacher who harbors any hope of his charges RESPECTING AUTHORITAH.  I have nothing for sympathy for any educator driven to such a point.  It's when corporal punishment of that sort becomes the standard that things get pretty ghastly.

I dunno.  If my 4th grade teacher pulled out a German 1940s era pistol and executed little billy in front of the class, I think we'd all get our act in line.  Forever.

My 4th grade teacher put me(and my desk) out in the hall, inside a cardboard box with the top cut off for talking in class.

Come to think of it, I was punished quite a bit for that during my school years. Thanks for convincing my young, impressionable mind that socializing = bad, public education system!

I wanna get back to the Adam Walsh story real quick:

Quote
Toole, who was serving five life sentences for other murders when he died in 1996, had long been the prime suspect in Adam's murder and had confessed to it twice, but later recanted.

Quote
He confessed again on his prison death-bed in 1996, his niece told Adam's family, and police said an extensive review of the case indicated that the killer could only be Toole.

They're only just now declaring "Yeah, okay, he did it"?

Quote from: The Times
Closing the case, police did not detail why they had conclusively linked him to the case.

They're keeping mum on the reasoning, but Walsh appears to be satisfied.
