The photo pretty much says it all.

Illinois National Guardsman Charged with Possessing Child Porn...

...for pictures of his four-year-old relative in a swimsuit.

Quote
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The family of an Illinois National Guard soldier said Friday that he's been charged with possession of child pornography in Afghanistan over innocent snapshots of a 4-year-old relative in a swimsuit.

The U.S. Army has charged Spec. Billy Miller of Galesburg, Ill., with possession of child pornography and a related charge of failure to obey an order that troops in Afghanistan not possess pornography.

America's Puritanical past throws its weight around!

Although one of the more mystifying parts of the article is that soldiers in Afghanistan can't have pornography.  Now, expecting them to make complex moral decisions on the battlefield is one thing, but expecting them to spend 6 months to 2 years without wacking it is inhumane.

The US Military seems to be run by some disproportionately conservative religious figure who cares more about the moral value of the troops than winning battles. A lot of the rules soldiers have to follow don't have anything to do with winning any wars, and a lot of them don't even cross into the realm of "proper decorum." They're just arbitrary ethics thrown onto people that probably don't want them, as they have their own ethic codes to follow.

I don't know too much of the specifics, but there's a good chance it involved more peer backstabbing skullduggery than puritanical stupidity, although the rules were there.

Also, people do ignore the porn thing.  It's one of those PC-driven rules that commanders tend not to give a flying fuck about because they know they cannot enforce it equally (if you ever become a leader, never make rules you cannot enforce), so it becomes one of those charges you add to someone to add salt in the wound - kind of like "conduct unbecoming".  Those turn out to be the best stories, like a time when an old crusty chief told me about a time he had to burn furniture within city limits to keep his guys warm (he was a sgt at the time), government furniture in city limits because they had to stay outside in a field under tents on their own, without any source of heat in -40 weather.  The guy got charged of multiple charges, was able to justify why, then was only found guilty of conduct unbecoming because he didn't have a haircut that week --  A slap on the wrist really.  That's what the pr0n charges usually end up being used for.

There's not really much to say about calling a picture of a child in a swimsuit "pornography" other than "if you think that's meant to be erotic, you're probably a pedophile."

Show of hands, all of you who find this depressing, ironic, and/or blackly comedic.

The article itself or the fact that the first comment in its comment section is a climate change denier?

While I am not a climate change denier (my current studies over artic sea ice change over the last six years killed any notion), I am still skeptical of that article.  Almost every doomsday prophecy in the last century has failed miserably, as it should have.

Between a well-documented Environmentalism industry whom among their ranks have 'scientists' who have the gusto to call people who question their theroys "rogue scientists" (the whole point of the scientific process is to let your standings get attacked relentlessly until a set of governing principles can be thought up) which have been well-documented by adept Gonzo journalists such as Rourke, and your homophobic teabagger climate deniers on the other side and their Muslim fundamentalist counterparts on the other, that little spotlight ever gets put on the people who know what they're talking about and have something to say.

The problem is that if governments and their civil servants listen to the likes of Gore, and not internationally-renowned individuals in the scientific field such as this fine example, there will be no progress.

Executive summary:  Another example of how the media in general (except the WP) fails to give us information crucial for understanding how to make well-informed choices in our day to day lives.

Also, anyone who doesn't think seeing a polar bear in the open and "time to chamber a round in my high-velocity rifle", but cute has issues.  Luckily the bear can sort that out.

And hark, further to my last - Reports in 96 that the Himalaya glaciers would disappear in 40 years time was based on speculation and not peer-reviewed science.  Another piece in the proof that idiots are running the save the planet show, just as the denier camp.

The global warming issue is one of those things that objectify the sort of bipolar extremism we have to deal with around here.  It's either not real, or the ice caps are melting RIGHT THE FUCK NOW OH SHIT.

Yes, it's real, yes, it's a problem, no, it's not going to affect us in our lifetimes, no, that doesn't mean you can ignore it, no, we centrists are not on your "side" either way.  Just keep improving things little by little and it'll work itself out.

Missed that comment. That's just a darling little blob of icing on the whole "THESE PLACES ARE ABOUT TO DIIIIIEEEE, THANKS TO FILTHY DIRTY HUMANS - SO GETCHA TICKETS NOW!" cake.

U.S. weapons manufacturer has been inscribing New Testament biblical codes onto its scopes since "always". Do people not realize how fucking insane a modern religious war is?

Quote
Trijicon has a $660 million multi-year contract to provide up to 800,000 sights to the Marine Corps, and additional contracts to provide sights to the U.S. Army.

Quote
Tom Munson, director of sales and marketing for Trijicon, which is based in Wixom, Michigan, said the inscriptions "have always been there" and said there was nothing wrong or illegal with adding them. Munson said the issue was being raised by a group that is "not Christian." The company has said the practice began under its founder, Glyn Bindon, a devout Christian from South Africa who was killed in a 2003 plane crash.

The excerpts themselves are more of the "Jesus has our back" sort than anything outright vengeful:

Quote
2COR4:6, is an apparent reference to Second Corinthians 4:6 of the New Testament, which reads: "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."

Quote
John 8:12, referred to on the gun sights as JN8:12, reads, "Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Expect to hear nothing more about it.

When I was in the (freshman) dorms and actually meeting people, I saw most people visibly losing interest in me as soon as I mentioned that I don't drink/do drugs other than my medication.

Well, this is cliche as all fuck, but you don't want to hang around those shallow fucks anyway.  (Unless you were a sanctimonious ass about not drinking or doing drugs, in which case they had a point.  But if you were polite about it, then yeah, fuck those guys.)  While I've occasionally caught good-natured shit for being a lightweight, I can't honestly think of anyone ever giving me a hard time for not drinking or smoking pot.

Several credible studies have already demonstrated that integration and/or hands-free does very little to reduce distraction levels.

I've heard that, but source?

The problem isn't whether or not you're holding a phone to your face, it's that you're talking to someone or doing shit.

Seems to me that it's both.  There are always potential distractions while driving -- adjusting the air, changing the radio station, talking to a passenger -- but these sure don't seem to cause as many accidents as talking on the phone.

And don't get me started on texting.

The excerpts themselves are more of the "Jesus has our back" sort than anything outright vengeful:

Quote from: Ezekiel 25:17
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

That is already pretty common on anything not, like, city-based.

Not that I am casting what you say into doubt, but what exactly?
