That Guy probably would have killed an entire family if he were driving.

That the people who wind up in infantry are doing stuff like this irregulary enough to make it news is actually kind of a positive mark for the Army's training ability.

Reminded me of this:

U.S. Soldier Survives Taliban Machine Gun Fire During Firefight

If the infantry has some kind of Highlights for Kids this guy is their Goofus. But my favorite part has to be, as usual, the responses on the video to anyone who mentions that maybe the guy needed some better fucking training. Yes, he's putting himself in the line of fire to defend freedom and justice or whatever. Doesn't make damn near every action he's taking here somehow not completely and utterly fuckoff stupid. It's like Forklift Klaus with guns.

U.S. Soldier Survives Taliban Machine Gun Fire During Firefight

By the way, I don't know which of you were in the actual infantry (I think maybe one or two... ?) but is it SOP to actually call out that you're hit that often? Basically continuously? I guess you can't count on someone having heard you unless you get an acknowledgement?

Initially got that off a friend's facebook post (with nothing more than some "so cool" nonsense,) but a quick googling found a reddit thread full of pissed off commentary from infantrymen. So I feel a little bit less like a doesn't-shoot-people-for-a-living couchfag for thinking the guy was being a fucking idiot. Granted, a fucking idiot while being shot at, but still. He's acting like that one guy from accounting at a team-building laser tag match.

At least he's got chicken.

Anyway, point is, yes, the guy's acting like an idiot, but we should be more pissed that we're fielding people with this level of training.

Guy says his squad was pinned down and he was drawing fire to let them get away, but somehow I don't think "get one guy to draw the short straw and tumble down the side of a mountain in plain view" is standard operating procedure in that situation. Also, I'm pretty sure even Metal Gear guards wouldn't have the tunnel vision necessary to not spot the rest of his squad moving through open ground even with these antics, unless they were positioned in such a way that a distraction wouldn't even be useful to begin with.

Yeah, like the guy seems like an idiot, but while I've known professional infantry soldiers (and seen how they move under "fire" - albeit only in paintball matches), I've never served and am nowhere near confident enough to say flat out "This guy's an idiot".

But yeah, it looks that way. Also my question above about "Are you really supposed to call out that you're hit THAT MUCH?!". I mean I can think of good reasons to do so, but that doesn't mean that's right.

It's weird. I got the feeling that the guy thought it was a game or something. Like he was calling for a time-out in capture-the-flag because he twisted his ankle.

It's amazing what gunfire does to the brain. Almost like we're afraid of those bullets.

Right, but isn't one of the main points of professional military training to condition a person so they can function well while being shot at?

Like I've known guys who were the kind of HERP DERP I GOTS ME A GUN! soldiers (and he was in an elite regiment fer chrissakes), but then I knew guys were were just really quietly professional and mature in everything they did. I loved those guys because it was always, holy shit I am actually dealing with real adults who can tie their own fucking shoes.

That was years ago. Fuck, I miss all those guys.

There's training and then there's people are shooting to kill you.

I don't think there are going to be a lot of scenarios for soldiers in war where people on the other side shoot at you "for funsies", no.

FWIW, the guy in the video doesn't come off as scared so much as he comes off as frustrated.

There's been some debate over whether or not the body armor we're giving to soldiers these days might be a little too good.  The idea is that if you reduce the experience of taking a high-powered rifle bullet to the chest to just being pushed over, you start to disassociate the soldier's actions from the concept of consequences.

Might explain how a person can pick up a real gun and pull the trigger without thinking "This might actually kill someone."

What I'm saying is that no amount of training as far as modern technology allows is going to simulate a life and death situation. If we had shared dreaming a la Inception or something that would be different, but there is a pretty wide gap between the training experience and the actual experience of war and all the drills in the world aren't going to fully prepare you for getting shot in the chest by an actual bullet.

I still don't get why the fuck people air live car chases.  How many end in death?
If you are trying to warn people, wouldn't radio be better?
Live video is just for assholes at home who want to see a massive crash.

They do, just whoever was at the helm fucked up. Apparently it was on a ten-second delay, but the editor didn't cut in time.
