HEY LET'S HAVE A ARGUMENT

An honest, reasonable belief of consent is generally a defense to rape, and it's sure that's what McDowell's gonna be arguing.  Should those IMs be enough to satisfy that?

Do you understand how terrifying the words “vibrating strap on” are for an asexual? That’s like saying “the holocaust” to a Jew.

Uh

The IMs were from the guy posing as her. And Mr. Rapist broke into her house, tied her up and violated her with a knife to her throat.

Um... exactly?

He thought he was doing everything she wanted, therefore... the ex should be shot and the guy is probably going to feel like killing himself for a long time.

Yeah, If you're going to fulfill somebody else's rape fantasy, I'm pretty sure it's considered "good etiquette" to run it by her in person first.

Guy who raped should get same penalty as boyfriend.  End of the day, he still raped an unwilling woman.  Doesn't matter if he thought it was okay because of some fake IMs.

For women and men who are into rape fantasies - and a general rule for anonymous sex coordinated over the internet - is to meet first and establish ground rules.  This guy was unconcerned whether this was real or fictious, he found an opportunity to rape with violence and he did.  Guy is scum.

Yeah. I've known people who were into some weird shit and the sensible ones usually meet first to get everything cleared.

Anyway, this fella basically let his dick do the thinking. He wanted this fantasy bad enough that he failed to make sure anything about it checked out. I mean, in this day and age you gotta be pretty damned stupid to trust that instant messages with someone you've never actually met are a sound basis for dong anything with potential consequences that include decades in jail as someone else's bitch.

I don't believe for a second that the rapist gave a good god-damn about her feelings.

Both men are equally responsible for this, though I'd have to say this is the first time in my life that I actually thought that someone might be a worse person than the actual rapist.

Not to say that either of their intenstines shouldn't be tied to truck bumpers and torn out at a steady five miles per hour.

It's the age-old "she told me she was 18" argument.

Does this argument ever fly, even if it's absolutely true?  No.

So there's your precedent, whether you agree with it or not (I don't in the hypothetical case, do in the case being discussed.  Whatever his thought process was, the guy sexually violated a woman and needs removal from society until such time as he can be fixed.)

Mind you, I'm not saying that it is difficult to find out if a woman really is 18 - but however hard that is, finding out if she's of age is at least somewhat harder than double-checking whether or not SHE REALLY WANTS YOU TO RAPE HER.

It's tricky, because (IN THEORY) if she really wants to be raped then she's going to say "No" to your face.

You can make the very logical argument that she wouldn't say "Yes" on IM then, but we all kind of know how the internet works.

You can make the very logical argument that she wouldn't say "Yes" on IM then, but we all kind of know how the internet works.

You're assuming that the fantasy is to be actually be raped.  With rape fetishists, it's usually about the role play, the act.  To pantomime rape, basically.  There's also the basic underlying assumption that it can stop at any time.  In effect, it's willful rape.

Now, she might say 'no' to your face during the actual act, but during any kind of non-sexual before hand meetup it's important to lay down ground rules and a safeword.
