Does Bioshock Steam still have SecuROM? I have a huge itch to play it, but my 360 is boxed up.

Steam tends to display notifications when there's third-party DRM; there is no such notification on Bioshock's store page. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, and the game's board in the Steam forums is not entirely conclusive, but the things you hear about the retail version do not necessarily apply to the Steam version.

Actually. The more I look, the more the consensus seems to be that the Steam version has got no SecuROM, but it has got a pointless registry entry that was left over on accident from the process of removing it, or something.

Well, I'm considering just going to the game store here, dropping $15 on a physical PC copy, and then firing up the torrent client, but all torrents I find either don't work, are broken, or are being monitored!

So if the Steam has SecuROM neutered to the point of "Not fucking le computer up", then I'll just buy it there.

Sounds like it's not neutered at all.

I think they've lifted the activation limit generally for Bioshock, but SecuROM is still going to be installed and running at full capacity.

Yes, that would be why I said they've taken out the activation limit since then.  That doesn't mean they've taken SecuROM out of the install, though.

From what I can find, people are saying they don't see SecuROM's dll in the install directory and so there must be no SecuROM in the Steam version, which really has nothing to do with whether it's installing SecuROM on your system.  I'm also seeing people confirming as recently as last week that the demo's still installing it, though.

The steam page for the full version used to warn about activations and securom, but it no longer does and all signs do point to it being removed. The steam page for the demo still says it has securom, so it seems consistent with your reports.

I'd say it's grist for the Steam thread, but I'd rather that particular iteration of The Argument stay dead.

Reviving this thread for DRM discussion in general, as the Questions about DRM thread is more for "Does X have DRM? How do I get around it" by Overlord Thad's Decree.

If there is another, more functional DRM thread notify me of it/move my post to there/mock me relentlessly

Just in case you don't want to click the link: You are required to be online the entire time you are playing the Single-Player Game Assassin's Creed 2. If for any reason your connection drops, ANYWHERE along the line, you are booted to the main menu with no warning, and cannot play until your connection is back.

I really do believe that this is going to become the preferred method of exiting the game.

Unplugging your LAN cable (or whatever, I don't know if other people still use wired connections any more) is probably faster than whatever convoluted triple-menu shit you'd normally have to do.

So the steam page for Assassin's Creed 2 has the following notice:

Quote
3rd-party DRM: UBISOFT REQUIRES A PERMANENT HIGH SPEED INTERNET CONNECTION AND CREATION OF A UBISOFT ACCOUNT TO PLAY THIS VIDEO GAME AT ALL TIMES.
(no emphasis added, already in caps)

Not to mention the game is $10 more than the average PC game.  I feel like I need to pirate this out of principle.

A GAME YOU OTHERWISE WOULD ENJOY COMES WITH A DRACONIAN DRM. WHAT DO YOU DO?

1) Purchase it anyway (because you are a little bitch)
2) Buy it then pirate a non-drmed version (won't make the company change their mind in the long run)
3) Pirate it and play it (makes the pirate problem worse, companies add more drm)
4) Don't play it and don't pirate it (vote with your wallet hahaha like it'll matter in any way)
5) Tell your congressman (the game companies already bought him)
6) Buy indie games instead (but VVVVVV costs FIFTEEN DOLLARS and doesn't even have 3D GRAPHICS :( )
