One of the really effective things in the flashback mission is how they've apparently modeled at least parts of Pripyat from the real thing.

There's the hotel, the ferris wheel, and the giant pool, but less obvious is how the big mural in the Palace of Culture (with the fruit lady and the horses and scientist holding some sort of scroll) is reproduced in the game. I had that "oh shit" shudder when I recognized it. As good as Fallout is with its thing, there's just something about an actual post-apocalyptic city, you know?

Yeah, I got the same feeling as I was going through the hotel.  It's gotta be totally creepy to walk through a ghost town for reals.

F.E.A.R. is actually okay.  It's not that scary but it's mid-above average for a shooter.  If for nothing else for the fact that you can totally ignore the actual game and just screw around with inventive ways to kill people using unusual combinations of slo-mo, grenades, and kung-fu.

You forgot the gun that shoots railway spikes and can physics weld people to things.

I considered it a personal failure if i didn't end every firefight with at least one enemy hanging by their head from the ceiling.

Buddy blasted through the first installment, then Extraction Point & Perseus Mandate yesterday. Claimed Perseus Mandate held twice the frights of the previous two, calling me up to ask if he could borrow a night light or four.

Got kinda weird when that thing didn't kill people, though.  I think F.E.A.R. might have had headshots as doing extra damage, but if it did ...

... well, you wouldn't know it.

For the record, it was the second stake through the heart that killed that guy.

Headshots only do 1.5x damage, i think? It's not a big enough deal that i usually bothered.

Also, the weapons you get towards the end of the original F.E.A.R. were really, really fucking fun. Hyper flesh-melter ray? Point-N'-Exploder??  :perfect:

So I learned last night that the counter of hours played on Pokemon does not reset when it hits 999:59.  It just stays there.  Forever.
That's only 3,599,940 seconds. (Assuming it uses seconds). This means it's probably using a 32-bit number to store the time played. Which means... if you play for 1,193,046:28, then it will either wrap around or break your game.

I remember the counter in FF8 would change color depending on how many times it looped.

There's an awful story of a guy who had played Pokemon Yellow long enough for the counter to max out, which I think was 255+ hours, and his save was wiped when a kid played hacked pokemon against him, lost anyway, and pulled the link cable out in disgust.

Stop telling stories like that without the "and then he broke that shit's nose" ending.

Mount And Blade is "Pirates!" but on horseback.  Assemble a ragtag team of peasants and pay them to fight at your command!  Also be an ultimate badass, slaying oncoming barbarians by the dickload.  Nothing is more satisfying than being the last man standing at the arena!  I AM THE MOST DANGEROUS PERSON IN THE UNIVERSE.

though, prepare to be taken prisoner several thousand times before you get your bearings.  (they took my horse!)

i got it for half price.  i wouldn't pay more than $15 or so for the game.  but it is surprising how complete and free your options are, even if the game is a little simple.

also, the lack of physical coinage in most town markets means that you have to trade your loot in for physical goods like ale and wool and furs, amassing your wealth that way rather than via kiddie pools full of glittering gold.  a cute touch!

yeah, I generally just go to a bigger town to sell my loot, though that's generally not super lucrative anyway. Quest rewards, ransoms, and mostly tournaments are were I get my moneys. The game is pretty sweet but a little unpolished. The npc horsemen for example don't seem to know how to use their lances properly, so when a tournament includes a jousting round it's just kinda lame how easy it is to defeat everyone.

It's great fun. I'm making plenty of denars buying furs in the icy north for as low as 45 and selling at the southern coastal town for over 400. I tried the arena but I'm rubbish without a horse.

Puzzle Quest is really weird.

It's basically combat Bejewel'd and as such you are pretty subject to randomly losing if your foe spontaneously generates a 7-chain combo.

So after a few restarts, I made a Knight, armored up with Mirror Gear(2 damage reflected for every time I am damaged essentially) and flooded Morale(+HP and some shit with purple gems). I just play calmly and slowly, grabbing yellows and greens for Stuns. All the HP and reflection make spontaneous eight-chain with 4 skull-chain combos from my foe not a big deal.

Now that my win rate is over 75% I just need to speed things up.

See it's a terrible game because the Bejewel'd aspect lets you lose for no reason but the strategy/RP nerd aspects are fucking delicious. I will probably exponentially enjoy the game if I just go GameFAQs the Capture solutions.

I think my favorite weapon as a Knight was the axe that gives you a 50% chance at a free turn if you hit skulls or something like that. It's useful forever. There are probably better weapons but the crafting system caused my brain to spurt explosively out of my ears and nose.

In other news, I've finished Aquaria. It was decent, but man is it a hassle to go anywhere. And the shortcuts are clunky. And I kept hoping for a permanent energy form damage upgrade that never came. Towards the end I just fish-form'd everywhere. I really loved the map marker system though, that was awesome; it should be mandatory for every game of that sort.

Trying to remember what sorts of crap I crafted in Puzzle Quest.  I think I made an axe with the Rune of Dragons that did something like +8 damage whenever I dealt 6 or damage which, after buffing the hell out of Battle, was basically whenever I made a match.  Went well with the "+6 to all mana reserves whenever you match 4 or more gems" harp.  Crafting wasn't that difficult in theory, except for the "getting the runes" part.

I got all the runes, it wasn't too hard. If you use the rat mount and keep the guardians diseased as much as you can, they can't rape you with their "+damage for each full mana bar" bullshit.

So, Winter party times resulted in games of Moonbase Commander and M.U.L.E (also standard Catan games).

MBC had the fun of missing repeatedly and screwing up the timing of Anti-Airs. Also the standard bullshit energy collector/energy pool collision detection and buildings touching walls when they are clearly not seriously what the hell.

Oh and the one where the starting base was surrounded by water was awesome. :wuv: randomly generated maps.

M.U.L.E. resulted in me being terrible at pressing the ACTION button (Atari controls!) at the right time for a plot, as always. Also constant confusion because I have barely played the game and my strategy seems to consist of banging my head on ACTION.

Also I am genuinely curious how many here have played any of these. Mostly I can't find anyone who's heard of them and they're fun.

I still have Kazz's copy of moonbase commander, somewhere.
