That reminds me that if there isn't a debriefing/results/statistics screen at the end of life, I'll be super pissed.

The letter grade is optional though.

I thought Brent's point was that Crisis Core has a shitty system, rather than anything to do with Rainbow Six.  Am I wrong?

I'm pretty sure you're right and everyone else is willfully ignoring Brent's point.

Almost.  I was saying that Crisis Core has a great system that is destroyed by the sheer repetition of its missions.  Just like Rainbow Six.

Since I loved Mass Effect to pieces, I thought I'd take the time to snag a copy of Jade Empire off of eBay and beat the shit out of it in a matter of a few days. I have to say, it doesn't quite click with me the way Effect did, despite having an interface that wasn't the most atrocious transgression against gamingdom. The combat system is absolutely wretched -- its unresponsive, clunky, you can't break off combos, there doesn't seem to be much of a difference in attack ranges between melee styles, and despite a lock on reticle attacks don't auto-direct (or if they do, so barely that it doesn't really make much of a difference).

On the other hand, you do acquire a musket from John Cleese.

Jade Empire is really a prototype for Bioware's later ventures into original IP. It has a decent story, if you dig on kung-fu movies, but the entire experience is rendered mediocre at best by the combat, which is really unpleasant, and really the focus of the game in a lot of ways. There is very little in the way of non-combat solutions to problems, which would be fine, due to the setting, if the combat were fun.

I think I won 90% of all combat by leap-frogging over my opponents to the end of their "line" at regular intervals and punching them a little.

The combat I didn't win by doing that, I won by pulling out a huge-ass sword.

Lately I've been playing this 1994 space colonization game called K240. It's from the era of two hundred page manuals you sat up and read at night, the ones packed with overabundant background information and imagination-inspiring artwork that didn't appear in the game.

You're playing in pseudo-realtime, building asteroid mining colonies out of densely-packed skyscrapers and orbital space docks. As well as dealing with competition from an alien race, there's also the ever-present danger of basic physics smashing your asteroids into each other. Later, when you develop asteroid engine technology, this can be made a primary means of warfare.

There's a lot to like about this game that later strategy games don't always replicate. There's this quietly implied setting of an aggressive expansionist interstellar empire. Each colony feels fantastically vulnerable and alone. The battles largely handle themselves and leave you to the strategy. Technology is bought from a megacorporation, not researched.

If you'd like to find out how much of my rambling is true timelessness and how much is nostalgia from when I was 11, K240 has been released somewhere as official abandonware. See if you can get it running in WinUAE.

Sigh. Maybe I should just turn in my video game badge. Not only am I not really enjoying Psychonauts all that much, but it's actually kind of pissing me off. I'll give an example: the Milkman Conspiracy.

Freaky fun visuals, but don't expect to stop playing any time soon, because when you load up a save, you fall off the world and lose a life. And the mission objectives -- oh God, the mission objectives -- I didn't know what I was supposed to be doing half the time. One of the puzzles has you looking through the eyes of a crow and you have to walk into a specific point to open a nearby gate, but there's no way you could've known that would happen unless you already knew that it would happen or if you just sort of stumbled into it. And when I finally got to the cutscenes that should've made me laugh, I was in such an irate mood that not even screeching exploding girl scouts could make me crack a smile.

And for some reason, Raz keeps putting on his little blue jumpsuit after cutscenes. It's getting really obnoxious.

No, it's okay; everybody admits that the worst part of Pyschonauts is playing it.

Actually, the Waterloo World level is really pretty awesome. I almost take back what I said.

So, hey, I just started up the Meat Circus in Psychonauts, and I got to this part in which you had to get a knife thrower to throw knives at a twirling table so that you could use them as platforms, all the while an escort character is dying and making you start the whole sequence over, and now I am so thoroughly enraged.

ADDENDUM: Although I have to admit, the scene with Dr. Loboto, Mr. Pokeylope and Sheegor was the first time I ever actually felt bad for laughing at something. That in and of it self deserves praise.

Meat Circus is gloriously designed to delight the eye, and enrage the spirit.

Testers who received their copy of The World Ends With You yesterday immediately tore it open and gleefully started playing it again.  After being forced to play it for 40 hours a week for three months, mind you.

Said testers are also fans of FFXI, so it might not have quite the same effect on non-mutants.  I'm still planning to pick up my cheap copy tomorrow and find out.

Parish offered it his :wuv: .
I disagree with him on a few things, but his  :wuv: / :fail: still counts for a hell of a lot with me. I'll definitely snag a copy for someone.

I beat Professor Layton.

Best ending ever.

If you do not own Professor Layton, I order you to buy a copy to speed up the process of bringing over the sequels.

This is not hyperbole.

If you do not buy Professor Layton and the Curious Village, you are impeding me and I will destroy you.  ::D:
