Bowser's Inside Story is just delightful.
Yeah, all the boss fights were pretty terrible.  Bonus minus points for the Poison Ivy fight, during which you constantly have to Evade diagonally and playing on a keyboard the game just seems to roll the dice on whether to move you diagonally, straight right, or extra-dumb straight forward.
Pretty much every goons pre-set in a room fight is amazing, though.

Yeah but with my colossal boss battle boner I carry into every game it's a really criminal offense and I'm glad I just sort of vicariously played the game through my best friend, who actually owns it and the PS3.

America in general seems to be just plain unable to do boss fights.  You'll be lucky if it isn't some sort of thinly disguised puzzle.

Even in our lock-down genre, the only notable boss is from a game made in Croatia.

...and was a thinly disguised puzzle SHUT UP.

Bioshock had roving encounters that were better boss fights than the actual boss fights.

The last boss fight was pretty OK but did commit the cardinal sins of "Press X to Win" and "Fight some 1st level mooks."

Oh wait: the Metroid Primes had some great bosses. And some terrible ones.

Yeah but Metroid Prime bosses are generally good because the vast majority of them avoid Press X to Win and more rely on you actually trying all of your powers until you can do something about a COLOSSAL ROCK GOLEM trying to crush you.

See also Devil May Cry, where even if you find a weak spot, you are just rewarded for it by being able to use the previously-established in-game combat engine to wail on it for massive damage.

So still playing X3:  Terran conflict

again, the learning curve is large,

again, I keep dying.

So right now, I'm doing a police-style arrest and scan mission out in one of the frontier systems.  My escort and I destroyed the main target, an illicit drugs smuggler and started scanning other targets when we noticed a red flotilla jumped in,

A race (from a previous game) called the Khaak came in with a carrier, which tore off pods which were individual cruisers which tore off fighters, these..

Of course I'm in an advanced recon scout, so there is no way in hell I could pick off even one of their ships, so I run to the edge of the system and hide while I watch from afar this task force destroy what are normal factory and trading outposts.

They also destroyed all the convoy I needed to scan.

Usually when large-scale ships are used in space sims, their actions are scripted for the most part, even in FS2.

This was the first time I saw a flotilla engaged in a raid that created all-out carnage, and this wasn't even part of the game's theme.  It is about a mystery involving self-replicating AI-based terraformers causing shit.

I'm impressed.

Also tried the bankrupt assassin campaign.  Didn't make it far, the bounty hunters wanted me more than I wanted cash.

Started on Lost Odyssey, and I'm really digging it so far. More than I thought I would, i'fact. I must have been really wanting a good JRPG. It's got high-definition polish and 16-bit snappiness!

16-bit snappiness!

Except for the long as hell battle intros.

It's a little too high-def for my tastes, as well, especially since they went so far as to ensure that you can see all of Ming's boob veins.

I'm waiting for more current-gen RPGs that look more like Dragon Quest VIII/anything else Level-5 does than Gears of War.
