Given the rediculousness of the ad campaign for Dante's Inferno I was ready to write this one off, but the actual game seems pretty fun and not ridiculous in a bad way.  My shock is apparent!  Still kinda silly, though.

I'd almost want to refuse to play that game on principle.

Fortunately I also have some legitimate reasons along the lines of "those kinds of games don't do it for me" and "I don't have a fucking next-gen system."

Yeah, when two of the consoles have been out for three years and the other one for four, it's time to change to current-gen.

"Gen" is a much more ambiguous concept than it used to be. Do the Wii and DS count as current-gen systems?

Now that I've done my budget the only thing stopping me from running out and buying one this week is the inconvenient placement of Jesus' birthday.  Screw you, savior!

Okay, so.... I was either blind, illiterate, or possessed by Satan this morning, and ended up getting FF7 on PSN instead of FF8.

However, by my reckoning, counting the money I spent on the disc version and on the download version minus what I got for the sale of the disc version, I'm still operating at a profit for that particular game. Plus, it's probable I'll want to play it again sometime in the next n years, so I guess it's a good thing it's not going anywhere.

I gave up on Final Fantasy X because I wasn't in the mood to listen to Tidus drone on about his daddy issues, and I decided to pick off a game that had been sitting on my shelf for a year or two: the copy of Suikoden III I bought off of Parish. Anyway: five hours straight in, and I've been having fun.

That is until I got to a three-headed boss monster who unleashed a devastating, party destroying attack three times in a row before any of my characters can even get off an attack, thus interrupting my (B-level skilled) magic casters before they even get a chance to use their spells.

Seems a little cheap to me.

This happens to me with some frequency in rpgs, DN. Probably because I tend to try to badass one-shot my way past several bosses in a row without leveling properly or doing side-quests on the way. I like to supergrind when I grind, so when I do level it keeps me ahead of the curve for a while, since I also rack up money and huge amounts of odd items during grinding seasons. JRPGs are also notorious for having a boss jump radically in difficulty and expecting the players to find ways to puzzle-solve/kill the boss rather than straight-out beating it to death with the Attack command. I realize that is hardly what you are doing here, but gamefaqs has an excellent walkthrough and boss guide.

Suikoden I and II were better anyway.

Bully: Scholarship Edition has the same excellent atmosphere as the original!  The new minigames also fit in nicely; biology class, for instance, allows you to use your Wii remote to grotesquely dissect dead animals Trauma Center style.  Four years after its initial release, I can't for the life of me figure out why Robert Ashley wanted to nominate the story for a Newbery award, though :\

Is the Wii version as horribly buggy as the Xbox 360 version?

So I've spent 24 of the last 48 hours playing Suikoden III. Turns out I really like it. Makes me a little sad that it's been sitting in my backlog for three years.

Probably most of the fun I've been having has to do the Skill system. The individual skills make just enough of a difference to make it fun and completely worthwhile. I spent most of that 24 hours just trying to pimp out Geddoe and Thomas. I just keep telling myself "I'll keep grinding until I can get Joker's Fire Magic Skill up to Grade A", or whatever.

And the whole Trinity Sight thing is pretty neat, too, at least if the first chapter of each character's stories is anything to go by. Hugo tells you what happened, Chris shows you how it happened, and Geddoe explains why it happened.

Also my favorite character is Geddoe. Fun fact: I used to think he was Georg Prime.

Wouldn't know, since I just finished the 360 version; I referred to a "wii remote" just in case anyone was actually considering getting it; that way I could slyly direct them without blatantly recommending it.  The 360 version really is a thoughtless port, isn't it?  All the new classes rely on pointer/waggle mechanics that don't come through very well with a controller, there are nearly zero graphical enhancements, the achievements are placeholder-ish and not very fun at all to get, and the game froze on me a few times :\

Biting the bullet, here:  Anyone considering this should get the Wii version; it really can't be any worse.

Yeah, I got all the achievements except one because at a certain point in the game, the little errands just stopped showing up at all.
