last I heard the damn thing's got SecuROM on it.

It doesn't.

For all the Bethesda's done wrong, they don't DRM their games.  Which is a pretty huge plus.

I am terrified of installing any PC games nowadays and shit like this this is the reason why. Is there, like, a database of what games implement what kind of copy protection? I don't know whom to trust.

Here's a no-longer-updated list, and here's the forum that replaced it.

Also a google search for "<name of game> DRM" will usually either turn up bitching or praising, depending on whether it has some or not.

Google searches generally don't turn up good information - just hearsay.

As for the links, they seem to be good... but the forum looks like it has more begging for cracks than it does actual information.

Note: Has some serious issues in vista (Graphical flicker, sound-desync.)

Crap.

Quote
Popular opinion in the steamforums seems to think that using multiple processors and turning all the settings on high causes this.

CRAP!

I use an AMD Athlon x64 dual core.  Apparently if you use the AMD Dual-Core optimizer, it fixes itself (this is just for that chip model).  I still have to run it at 1152x864, but it's running properly.  There is an occasional minor graphic blink when changing screens, but nothing that hampers the game.

XII is... kind of becoming a chore to play.  I hate joining the legions of players who left it sitting on Phon Coast, but now seems like a pretty good time, now that I own the entire Half-Life saga up to current, to replay them all like I've been planning.

And I mean all.  Including the HL1 expansion packs.  Yes, even Blue Shift.

I'm starting with Portal.  What?  It's chronologically first.   ::D:

(NOTE: Half-Life is now the only series I've ever owned absolutely every game in.  Huh.)

(DOUBLE NOTE: Except Dark Cloud if you must be incredibly technical.)

(ULTRA NOTE: I am not an FPS fan.)

(M-M-M-M-MONSTER NOTE: I actually own the entire HL1 series and HL2 twice.)

(HOLY SHIT: I am referencing a completely different FPS while saying that I don't like FPSes.)

:enraged:

Don't forget Lost Coast.

ARC RANTS ABOUT SOMETHING I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT.

So why must it be first chronologically?

Well, Arc is right.  Portal has to be after the portal storms, but sometime between the storm and the three hour war, or just a bit afterwards.  Otherwise, GlaDOS wouldn't be cracking wise about not envying you being outside.

Why does it need to be before the three hour war?

... Also, what is this three hour war you speak of? I have not actually played anything based on HL2.

A) It was the Seven Hour War.
B) The Xen beings were already starting to appear before the resonance cascade ; Half-Life alludes to this very bluntly, if not directly (Xen marine life already infesting Earth's water, Lambda already having acquired some Combine technology, etc.).  Plus the cascade itself - and the chain of events that led from that to the portal storms - were pretty deliberately orchestrated by G-Man.  GLaDOS and Aperture in general seemed pretty well aware of what was going on in Black Mesa, and if you take GLaDOS's inability to tell an outright lie at face value, Black Mesa still exists at the end of Portal - but is clearly not going to help you.
C) Zero environmental damage to the area outside of Aperture Science labs suggests that the Combine haven't arrived yet to generally piss off Captain Planet.
D) Why not?

Quiet Brent, you're giving away all the clues to Captain Planet: Source

Black Mesa was also the name for the whole resistance thing Eli and Alyx and them were doing.  Could have been that Black Mesa she meant.

Could also mean that GLaDOS is not aware Black Mesa is gone.  She has a monologue while you're fighting her to the effect of "If you knew what was going on outside you wouldn't want to leave", but she never makes any direct references to the Combine.

Strictly speaking, there aren't enough clues to determine when Portal happens, so feel free to create your own chronology!

Personally, I say after the events of Half-Life, two alternate realities were created.  One where Gordon Freeman is a kid, and the other where he's an adult and G-Man conquers the world.

I have a feeling that GLaDOS was cut off from the surface once the Combine invaded, so she knows something bad is happening, but does not know details.  The Black Mesa shot at the end could just be brand loyalty programmed into her, and due to lack of new information she assumes Black Mesa is still around somewhere (which it is, kinda).

Alternatively, Jonathan Coulton wasn't given any background data to write Still Alive and deliberately left it open.
