I haven't been able to play Defcon since I engaged the computer in a game of Speed Defcon. Now I'm afraid of the people I'll encounter online. More so than usual, anyway. I was prepared for the fact that they'd have come up with weird as fuck little micromanagey strategies that tilt the mathematics overwhelmingly in their favor (side note: "Zergling circus" should enter our lexicon as a name for this phenomenon), but now I'm also paranoid about running out of time and being hit by ten times as many nukes as I was ever able to click on.

Any game that can make me feel really dreadful about the prospect of losing is worth a lunch or two, I think. But your mileage may vary, which is the whole problem, now, isn't it?

The trouble with Defcon is that you can play it at the following four speeds: Too Slow, Too Fast, Way Too Fast, and Just Watching Now.  And everybody has to agree on what speed setting to be on, with the slowest setting trumping any other setting.

The game is tremendously shallow in its mechanics, the boats are absolutely no fun to deal with, and there isn't even an option to just turn the music off even though the music is obnoxious, and there is only one fucking map and frankly I don't think it's balanced.

Finally, I understand the graphical desire for having long arcing missile trajectories going across the screen, but it made zero sense as soon as South America wanted to nuke Africa and the missiles had to pass by Europe first.  Huh?

Save your money and spend it on Multiwinia.  That might be fun!  Maybe.

Defcon is a board game. You pull it out of the closet once or twice a year and have fun with it for a couple of hours. If you play it enough to get really good at it, enough to make your training a more important factor in your total skill than your natural ability at the mechanics, you've just about crossed over into pathological obsession and should be regarded with the pity usually reserved for people who take Monopoly tournaments seriously.

Defcon is definitely an exercise in style more than it is one in gameplay, and it really shows. I'm pretty sure Kazz and the others who played with me when it first came out would agree that we pretty much exhausted the strategic possibilities at the time, and victories pretty much came down to luck or numbers.

Diplomacy mode was fun just because of how silly it was to betray everybody for no reason.

But I recall that once we figured out how defensible Europe was, Europe never won again, because we pummeled that continent so fucking hard.

There are others! Somewhere! I forget where, but they've got hundreds.

If that's true, it'd mean they have way more maps than players.

Yeah, Europe became a largish glass sheet, polished by the ashes of a billion souls, about 15 seconds into Defcon 5.

No one is forcing you guys to play Cave Story, it's not an amazing game or anything. I mean if I was stranded on a desert Island, I'd rather have SM3 than Cave Story. But it's a cool classic feeling platformer with really well designed retro style graphics that have their own distinct style, is just deep enough to entertain without over straining itself, and controls really nicely. You are gay for not playing it since it's free, but whatever.
