Pulling in from other conversations: the camera angles in this game too were pretty horrendous.  It's cute that they wanted to show me something all the time, but usually they wanted to do it while I was busy trying to race some clock or not get eaten.

... zelda ...
... stealth ...

Should never be mentioned so closely together.

We just can't take that chance again, gentlemen.

That was the worst bit in Wind Waker for sure.  Not counting the trophy collection, since that's optional.

I didn't have any trouble in BG&E up until the last boss.  You're forced to use a move that until that point I had only used once and forgotten about.

I dunno, it was decent in Majora's Mask where if you did it at night you had a very, very explicit indication of what the guards could see. And it was short and easy and you only had to do it once.

Wind Waker's stealth was just tedious and largely not fun, though, I agree.

Phantom Hourglass at least eventually gave you the MacGuffin to slaughter the guards.

I thought BG&E's last boss fight put you in a giant robot or something.

Well after the point at which i gave up, which was the first time i had to do the timed stealth sections.

After tossing about a few "next game" ideas I decided to take another stab at Oblivion (o/~ Torrenting to get around DRM yeeeeeah! o/~)  Anybody got any suggestions for making the whole experience more entertaining while taking me more or less quickly to the main endgame?

Don't level up as soon as you can. If you gain a bunch of levels in quick succession, your equipment risks falling behind and your increased skills/stats may not be enough to keep you on the curve. That's especially true if you have non-combat skills as majors. It's not always a big deal, but in that case there's a chance you'll have to spend some time playing catch-up with everyone else in the world. That happened to me with my first character, and it meant a lot of running away from bears and ogres and will-o'-the-wisps.

There's a fuckton of really fantastic mods for Oblivion, many of which dramatically improve the game; half the fun for me of an Elder Scrolls game is just in all the user-generated content. This looks like a pretty robust guide, but I also want to specifically recommend Lost Spires, which was a particularly good content mod that added more of the stuff I liked best - exploring. (And apparently they've added voice since I last played, which was my biggest problem with it.) There's also some impressive graphical upgrade mods, although those are probably no good for you unless you're running a rendering mainframe you stole from Pixar or something.

I'd also STRONGLY recommend some kind of scaling and/or leveling mod; the way it's set up in the basic game can get horribly, horribly wrong, and it's the biggest problem with the game. Fortunately, it's also a very heavily-modded element of the game. Unfortunately, some of those mods aren't good, and some are very complex. It's also a very personal thing, so you'll have to do the research on that one yourself.

For obvious reasons, you'll probably want some kind of mod manager.

Also there's this thing, which sounds Very Interesting, but I haven't tried it.

Oblivion has no DRM, which is pretty nice. Actually felt bad after having it pirated for a while and went and bought the damn thing.

Anyway, if you dare, just try to get FCOM working, it's basically a collection of mods that serve to tie together 3 or 4 other big content mods.

Unique landscapes is a nice couple of mods that just makes the place look prettier and gets rid of the monotony of the same forest over and over again.

Ha ha, I'm way ahead of you all!  I reinstalled Oblivion days ago!

I played it straight before, now I'm using Francesco's mod to see if it's any better.

Brent, the only thing you must install is BTMod.

So it doesn't.  For some reason I thought it had Secumbooya.  GambooROM.

Also, it was lying right next to my old Septerra Core disc, so assuming that game runs on modern PCs I may have my next one lined up.  Only reason I'm putting it off is I didn't play too far before, and I'm a little burned on obscure gaming right now.

I actually like darnified UI a bit better than BTMod, but either one really is a great improvement.

You actually have more time than the time limit says. When it hits 0, the gas starts damaging you, half a heart every few seconds. You can still escape if you're speedy with the safe zones.
