(minus the price)

Sadly, that's exactly why this will never happen.  If I wanted to fuck around with a Space Marine army, I could do it for free in such a game.  Games Workshop relies on me having to spend hundreds of dollars to do that.

Well, GW  does this thing where the results of tabletop games effect a larger campaign, the PC game could do something similar (and charge a monthly fee)

My copy of Rhapsody on ds finally came in today.  It seems to be almost exactly the same except........they killed how much fun battling was.  Instead of ffta sort of battles, it's now more like....general ff battling, which is a lot more boring.  I like being able to move around on a grid and avoid attacks and cast spells from a distance damn it.

Do quest NPCs in Oblivion scale their equipment to you, like mook bandits and shit?  Because I just killed Raynil Dralas (Vampire Hunter Extraordinaire) in, like, three hits, before he could even draw his sword, and then found out he had like the second best armor in the game.  If it was always like that I'm going to feel silly about not doing that quest much earlier.

Oblivion NPCs' equipment scales according to their level, which, in turn, scales according to yours. You will see common bandits wearing the best kind of armor at high levels.

That said, lots of quest NPCs tend to have equipment a few levels higher than you. Yes?

Well, I knew about the bandits.  Before I trashed that guy I had resorted to basically picking all my Mithril shit off them, while wondering why the hell these fuckers were trying to rob me when they were wearing about 5 times the entire value of the Shire.  I was just kind of wondering if Raynil always had that sort of armor in order to be any threat whatsoever at some point, seeing as how he didn't get to cast one spell before I killed him (though that probably mostly has more to do with the fact that you start at melee range, and I've got 100 strength, a Dremora greatsword, and my difficulty slider halfway down.)

So does having a low difficulty slider basically make mobs of enemies the only thing even vaguely threatening?

Kind of a working converse to how nightmare mode in Legend of Mana made normal encounters scary, but boss fights obnoxiously weak?

Oblivion's difficulty  is 29 kinds of fucked up.

(Pretending like Mr. Saturn does not exist.)

Well, sorta.  If you set the thing all the way down it's akin to God Mode.  One of the first things I did this time was set it all the way down and then wipe out the entire Market District, just to get it out of my system (this was fresh out of the opening dungeon, mind you).  Text editing the config file makes it simple to go even below the limit of the slider, to the point where you literally take no damage and everything else dies in one hit from anything.

It's one of the many, many things that turns Oblivion into a sandbox in the strictest sense - the "game" is so godawfully broken that it's pointless to even try and take it seriously without an overhaul mod (which I'd try, but honestly I think when I finish this run I'll have put as many hours into this game as I ever will.)  It's really to the point that if you do something zany like give yourself 100% Chameleon (which basically lets you stab faces with impunity forever) or invent some sort of literal nuke spell, you're really in keeping with the spirit of the thing.

120% Chameleon is possible within the "normal game difficulty" boundaries. Think on that one.

Sadly, there's no way to conveniently get zillions of MP that I know of, so giant long rage nukes are impossible.

Now... three-stage nukes that cast magic res down twice on someone for a few seconds followed by an ungodly amount of immediate damage... Those are pretty fun.

EDIT:
But ultimately, what should have been my Breton Uber-mage turned out to be a rogue-y heavy-armored douche who walked around using his immense intellect to brew battle drugs and poisons and kill his enemies by putting paralysis/shock damage poisons on his weapons. He was a dick. A massive, amazing dick rivaling my own.

What about giant short range nukes?  I've got massive HP, so my current strategy for dealing with crowds is to let a zillion fuckers pile on me and then start firing my Staff of Fireball at the ground.  Probably my best bet, too, since I don't really have enough Magicka to cast one Fireball by myself.

Also, I am carrying around about 200 lbs of potions.  I'd get rid of them but honestly I can't bring myself to part with anything even somewhat useful.

1)Learn alchemy.
2)Mix DOOMSDAY POISON and UBER BATTLE TONICS
3)Throw all that lame, useless shit away. It blows. (Excepting some paralysis poisons. Those can be amazing)
4)Never look back.

I also carried several hundred pounds of potions and ingredients. At least 5 pounds of that are dedicated to potions that produce 100-450 points of feather for over 5 minutes.
The rest are potions that simultaneously bestow boosted strength, HP regeneration, and a boost to either intelligence, agility, or speed. Some magic tonics that simultaneously boost and regenerate magicka at some mad rate, or make intelligence jump by 30 points.
And let's not get me started on poisons. Do you know how cheap (i.e. hilarious) it is to add a weakness to poison enchantment on a weapon? Or better still blast some poor fucker with it and then watch as they simultaneously explode into flames, electricity, and straight wound damage (for a total between 60 and 90 points), AND collapse from paralysis for 2-3 seconds (all without any poison weakness)?

It's almost as game breaking as max chameleon.

Destruction spells are terrible at dealing with crowds. If you're facing multiple enemies, you want Illusion spells. Command spells are no brainers, but usually too costly to rely on. Thinning out your enemies' numbers with Terror effects is a better idea. If you manage to sneak up on a group, Frenzy works super well as long as no one sees you cast it, and it causes lasting grudges even with short duration. It just has to last long enough to get the target to hit one of his pals once.

If all else fails, an area effect Paralyze with a 1 second duration is guaranteed to buy you time to escape while your opponents pick themselves off the ground. (Cast a 100', 1 second Paralyze in a city crowd for maximum hilarity.)

The nice thing about these level-based Illusion effects (and also Turn Undead) is that spells rated to work on level 25 creatures will actually work on creatures of any level, as long as your spell efficiency is 100%.

Unfortunately, this runs counter to my new "wade in and smash everything single-handedly" philosophy.
That said, I love basically every obnoxious NPC follower.

EDIT:
In spite of how ineffective they are, having some mooks to watch my back (that I don't have to cast a summon spell for) is somehow very rewarding to me.
Don't even get me started about the Knights of the Nine siege walzing in without any real plan for survival on the lost castle.

Just finished Silent Hill: Homecoming.  It was pretty good!  Also, fairly difficult!  The regular street creatures were more dangerous than the bosses...  The goddamn nurses could slice you to ribbons if you screwed up.

Anyhow, gonna follow up with Dead Space after work tonight.  Woo!

Playing through megaman legends 2 right now.

God this game is great, why can't they make more games like this? There are so many dungeon explorer games out there that just suck compared to this.

The hilarious thing is that MML2 is a pale shadow of the original.  Ho hum.

Does it take a serious turn for the worse half way through or something? Right now it seems to have the best qualities of the continuous world of 1 and the varried missions of Misadventures of Tronne Bonne.

They're both great games, but people tend to gloss over some glaring engine issues IMO.  They both had an atrocious targeting system that was more likely to have you shooting a pig on a hill 2 miles away than the guy punching you in the face; 1's was worse than 2's and also 1 had the lousy digital control scheme (though I guess the N64 version had analog?).

That said, they were both a whole lot of fun despite those glaring basic flaws, and just oozed charm.

Overall, I much prefer MML2 to 1, but I really loved the interconnected dungeons in the first game. If nothing else, I'd like to see that used again in a game.
