Delicious Shadow Over Mystara (even if Tower of Doom feels a lot more...D&D-like).

Side-scrolling beat-em-up MMO?

Hmm.
Maple Story wasn't that great.

(Okay, so MS is a platformer.)

Playing through MGS3 again reminded me of a webcomic called Rush Limbaugh Eats Everything, wherein Rush Limbaugh, well, eats everything. Starting with endagered species like the spotted owl, then he moves on to devouring the rainforest, then all sea-life, and finally he starts eating Antarctica. Yes, ALL of it. Sadly the comic is down and apparently has been for a while. You can read most of it in the wayback machine, though even then a number of panels are missing.

Also apparently my last save in MGS3:S was in 2006. I didn't know I had been away from the game for 2 years. That's almost an eternity in video game time.

I picked up of Microsoft Funbuck cards today and invested in Worms (extremely vanilla) and Puzzle Fighter 2 HD Remix.

Puzzle Fighter is still the best puzzle game I've ever laid hands on.

As much as I don't like save-anywhere from a design perspective, its necessity from a practical perspective is becoming more and more apparent.  Case in point: I have 25 minutes to blow right now and absolutely nothing else to do.  I know I can't fire up Mother and make some progress in it because that would require more than 25 minutes*, unless I wandered around Podunk or something.

Obviously Mother can't be expected to be up on modern shit (it has the Talk Command, Attacking Dead Enemies, AND Separate Options to Use and Eat) but it's still irritating, and if it were a game that's supposed to be with the times I'd drop it and find something I digest in smaller pieces.

* I do not use savestates.

Separate Options to Use and Eat

This actually matters for at least one item.  If you use bread in a dungeon instead of eating it, you leave a trail of bread crumbs that will bring you back to the entrance.

I'm not defending the design choice here, just noting that it's not completely pointless.

As much as I don't like save-anywhere from a design perspective, its necessity from a practical perspective is becoming more and more apparent.

Or better yet, a "suspend" mode which lets you save and quit, then resumes the game at startup and deletes the checkpoint you made.  Some handheld RPGs have this, and I heard DQIV DS kinda fucks it up by making it a magical 4th save slot.

The stronger you punch, the better the door. So there are like super strong murderers who punch people into Venetian doors and shit"

Somehow, this hasn't been includeded to every handheld RPG in existence. I consider it a crime.

needs to be part of the handheld itself, like how they build in a "sleep" mode

in fact exactly like that, except instead of requiring little power it would require ZERO (0) power.

DS and PSP both have as close as you're going to get, I think.

Well, PSP's got internal memory.  I suppose they could go the extra mile, but, Sony.

Hm, I wonder how different sleep mode is from exactly what you've described...
In terms of actual power consumption, I mean.

Bleh, that's what I was afraid of. Bionic Commando is basically everything I was looking for in a couch co-op game, but it sure as hell isn't easy enough for most folks to pick up and play. I'd think XBL Worms might do the trick if I hadn't heard so many mediocre reviews.

Barebones weapons or something? Seems like a pretty hard formula to mess up.

Actually, you can Use the Bread -anywhere- to turn it into crumbs, and then using the crumbs teleports you back there. Doesn't have to be in a dungeon.

Very barebones weapons.  Especially if you've played World Party or Armageddon.  It's two rows that basically amounts to...

Bazooka - Homing Missile - Grenade - Cluster Bomb - Banana Bomb - Dynamite - Air Strike - Shotgun - Uzi - Fire Punch - DragonBall
Prod - Blow Torch - Mine - Sheep - Kamikaze - Ninja Rope - Girder - Jet Pack - Teleporter - Skip Go - Surrender

It makes me feel kind of cheated.

Only in Worms would that be considered a small selection of weapons.

That's the Worms 2 lineup of weapons, sans secret overpowered bullshit.

That actually makes me MORE interested in XBLA Worms.

BUT THERE IS NO BASEBALL BAT!  :sadpanda:

Or Holy Hand Grenade.  :sadpanda: :sadpanda: :sadpanda: :sadpanda:

It's still a fun game, but sometimes just fucking around with the overpowered stuff made for an amusing session of gaming with friends.

I thought Worms XBLA was grand, honestly.  And wouldn't mind playing it again sometime.

Or some easily pirated and online playable version of PC Worms for that matter.
