Slugging through Dawn of Mana now, on the final chapter.

Dawn & Children suffer the same problem. Gorgeous, gorgeous game that is raped in the bum hard by pisspoor game design choices.

Key Example in Dawn of Mana: Chapter 7, I'm storming the BBEG's palace. There is an area locked by a gate with 4, well, locks. The enemies that hold these keys fly around above you, well above how high you can jump. They are completly immune to ranged attacks. So how do you kill them?

Find the guntowers shooting at you - no easy task given the sheer amount of monsters and shit going on, not to mention BLOOM EVERYWHERE, climb up, kill them, do a fancy double jump on TOP of the tower, then wait 10 minutes or so for one of the flying things to lazily fly in your general direction. When it gets close enough, leap off and try to whack it. Each thing needs 2 whacks to die, and there are four of them.

This is not good game design.

Oh, I remember that crap.  There's a trick to it but I don't care to recall it in THAT much detail.

The defining moment for me was somewhere in Chapter 4 where you have to kill some enemies to open the door.  Unfortunately they're clinging to the ceiling, don't appear on the radar, and won't trigger unless you look directly at them.  I played through the damn level like three times fully annihilating everything until I finally managed to trip them by accident.  Even then I didn't know what the hell I did.  I had to ask one of the testers on that game later what the hell actually opens that door.

What kills me is how all the game's flaws worked in perfect concert to make the whole product inexcusable.  I mean, if the level design had been better, OR if the mono system had worked properly, OR the game had not been designed in such a way that you had to redundantly fuck with it, OR if the game were just a bit prettier, OR if there was ANY FUCKING MULTIPLAYER, it wouldn't have been total trash.  Alas, it is all those things and more.

I'm surprised by how far they take this, and by how affected I am, personally, by the Renegade choices:

You just need to follow a soothing mantra of, "Good, bad? I'm the guy with the gun."

The boat? I think I remember that area. I just went in guns blazing. When I turned around to check why the door wasn't opening, I was already used to Molecats on the ceiling, so I switched to Wisp Hexorbs and looked up.

Was there like some set mantra of making things...so...uh...I noted several times it was very easy to get lost. In the canyon, on the boat..later levels seemed a lot more linear. Combination of the way the level is + bloom meant I missed the tiny little cave opening where I was supposed to go. I'm also noticing sometimes the music doesn't play - the first time I fought Stroud for example (Who I have no idea why the fuck jesus christ he is a DICK) - the music didn't feel like playing.

I never had a problem with the music.  It's either your disc, or you're just missing it because Stroud's battle music is sort of quiet.

And no I don't know what the fuck DoM's level designer was smoking, but everyone pretty much agrees he was being a dick.  That sort of thing is probably why we pretty much don't design levels any more.  Everything's either a series of straight corridors, a series of isolated battles, or some kind of randomly generated bullshit.

Re: Mass Effect Spoilerz
execute her due to her over-willingness to switch sides (Renegade). It was about that time that I remembered that I was supposed to be playing a Renegade. I wasn't prepared for how much this would actually upset me.
See, I prepared myself for this outcome, only to be taken aback by
how calmly she accepted her fate. Usually, when I'm about to execute someone, they scream bloody murder. And take two hundred bullets to the spine. As I chase them in hot pursuit. Throughout a self-destructing level. Here she accepted my decision as if I had just told her that Breakfast hours at McDonald's had ended twenty minutes ago. A resigned tone mixed with a steadfast resilience that the McGriddle would soon meet her lips another day, just not now.
Unnerving.

You ever play audiosurf, and suddenly you're surprised at how many red cars there are on the road 'cause the song's not that intense, and you're planning to hit all of them since they're kind of far apart, and then you realize you're not playing audiosurf at all and instead you're actually driving down the highway at night and you're kind of sleepy?

Yeah, me too.

It's not Zedpower who lives dangerously.  It's the people in his city who live dangerously.

As part of my preparations to not have my ass handed to me online in Starcraft II: MBS (maybe?) Boogaloo, I'm finally playing* through the campaigns of the original. Just finished up vanilla Starcraft and starting on Brood Wars. For a real nostalgia trip, I'm also replaying The Antioch Chronicles.

*And by playing, I mean not typing 'Power Overwhelming'.

Dawn of Mana beaten. It's either alluding to SD3 or another game at the end.

Hey, Brent, you heard anything about new World of Mana projects that are stewing in Squeenix HQ? Perhaps a remake of SD2/3? Or something more? I want answers, dammit, and I'm not above degrading myself to get them.

why is it that in pokemon fire red/leaf green they remade the series without fixing anything about it e.g. flash is an HM and also all the other HMs are also HMs

Because it is compatible with Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald which still held those conventions.

Well why the fuck doesn't someone goddamn well fix the problems with the fucking series like the fact that HMs are an enormous horrible pain in the ass and IVs are basically something that someone should get shot with a nailgun for thinking of them

Yeah, that's really what did it for me.

Anyway, just beat the game last night, and I'm wondering what I should do for my second playthrough: should I do the New Game + with my Renegade Vanguard again, making the Renegade decisions I wish I made my first time through, or should I take the new Sweetheart Sentinel with a Shotgun I rolled down Paragon Lane.

Oh yeah, I got the Shotgun Achievement, which gives me access to the Shotgun skill set for any class. As I've said before, there's nothing a maxed-out shotgun can't accomplish.

Addendum: I did some extra-terrestrial tribadism, but only because the game wouldn't let me get it on with Wrex.

Have I mentioned that ME is the best game ever for making persuasion, which I always level when available, worthwhile?

If you didn't take it last time, do on this play, it gives you a better chance of getting it on with Wrex, and the BEST BOSS FIGHT EVER.
