So I picked up Metal Slug 7 and man, it's pretty great.  Not MS3 great (yet), but pretty great in the sense that Ralf is punching the shit out of tanks.

I'm debating with myself over whether to replay both Penny Arcade Adventures or to play Valkyrie Profile 2.

DECISIONS.

Valkyrie Profile 2 isn't too long of a game, I notice.  You could probably safely play that for a while.

I didn't have any extra spending money back when PA Adventures 1 came out on the 360, so I decided to wait until a couple of weeks ago. I found out that it was on PS3, so I got it on there because I really don't like the the 360 controller compared to the PS1/2/3 controller, especially because I can just recharge my PS3 controller.

Unfortunately, they still haven't released the second episode on PSN yet.  :;_;: All I've heard is that it should be out by the end of the year, but that's looking less and less likely.

Political Machine 2008

You can play a republican space monster!  Lord Kona.  Has absolutely horrible stats, but tons of money and the ability to make more.  For some reason he is from Delaware.  As tempted as I am to have him run against Jimmy Carter, I'm going to have to pick a more viable candidate for my first play.

I would be talking about Mass Effect on the PC right now, but my attempt at pirating the game has been thwarted.  The game throws this vague error message at me when opening the .exe, and it's not like I can just pop over to Bioware's tech support forum, can I.

I'm not asking for help, just contributing to the discussion.

No One Lives Forever 2 manages to fix nearly everything that was annoying about NOLF1: Fewer stealth sections, what stealth sections there are don't result in "FUCK YOU, GAME OVER" if you botch them, it's easier to hide, much fewer dickhead FPS moments, better writing, some pretty neat boss fights, &c &c, as well as adding a skill system that is in no way based on Deus Ex's.  Sections with respawning enemies tend to get ridiculous, though, and as with most FPSes these days, the final "boss" is anticlimactic.  Still an excellent game, though.

On the other side of the coin, the expansion (Contract JACK) turns the wonderful spy pastiche into as generic an FPS as I've ever seen, stripping out everything that made NOLF worth playing past the third stage.  Including the thing that keeps enemies from standing inside each other in big groups and that other thing that made enemies die quicker when shot in the head in NOLF.  Honestly, it reminded me a lot of Blood 2, only with all the shit replaced with a bland paste that's entirely unremarkable save for an unpleasant texture.

LITHTEEEEEEECH!! :MENDOZAAAAA:

EDIT: Oh, and I just realized that any boss fights with a health bar are in fact dependent on how many times you hit them, rather than the amount of damage you deal when you hit them.  This is interesting when you realize that a 9mm bullet is effectively as powerful as, say, a portable rocket launcher.  Possibly more so, since you have guns that shoot a lot of them at a faster clip than the lawnchair.  ::(:

That is the most fantastically lazy programming I have ever seen. And I'm including shit like Morrigan's sprite.

Space Rangers 2:

Oh my.  This game combines what I like about SAIS and Escape Velocity Nova into even MORE awesome.  And they bolt on text adventures AND a mini-RTS.

I can't finish Bioshock. It feels like everyone in there is trying to put their cock in my ass*, and I'm supposed to work for the one guy who tells me "oh no y'see it's just a really big suppository". I'm all out of motivation.

*: Except maybe the little girls, but I'm not 100% sure they're not.

While there's no real reason why you have to finish BioShock
(Atlas is mind-controlling you, you kill him, there I spoiled it for you)
, really once you hit the midpoint you can blow through it without even paying much attention if you're on anything but the hardest difficulty.  And even then you just abuse the respawn chamber.  Just power through to the ending and say you finished the thing.

ARC EDIT: :negative: there I spoiled it for you

I really felt BioShock fell apart at the ending of the game; much like Farenheit/Indigo Prophecy, it's a much better game if you just stop playing at a certain point and pretend that was the ending. The advantage for BioShock, however, is that if you stop
immediately after you've killed Andrew Ryan
, the story actually feels like it's concluded fairly well.

Boy, I am just tearassin' through all these games.

Aliens vs. Predator 2.  Despite being on the same bullshit Lithtech engine as NOLF and despite still having the same problems with the mouse and spotty melee attacks it's... mostly fun.  I played everything in it completely out of order (Alien, Marine, Predator) because I do that sort of thing.

Alien was fairly neat, except that the whole "spotty melee targeting" thing made the killin's a little rough.  Also, despite being a jet-black killing machine everyone and their dog can see you in the shadows, so you're not really stealthy so much as taking alternate routes through vents most of the time, and oh, are there vents.  Vents vents vents.  Vents with lights, vents with ladders, vents with mesh screens, vents that connect to other, larger vents.  A xenomorph's life is spent primarily in vents, you know.  If there's no vents, they make it out of that weird crap you see all over the place.  Still, the entire thing sums up their existence of "fast scurrying followed by killing people as quickly as possible" pretty well.

The Spess Mahreen's chapter was all about being in the dark, alone, while aliens come after you from all sides and chase you down roads and hallways oh God they're still coming after me I've shot like fifty of them I have never run backwards while firing this much before in my life and you want me to go how deep into there and turn the computers back on have you seen some of the shit that's trying to kill me?  With a quick detour into "escape this complex full of humans armed only with a pistol" territory, of course.  The final boss was okay (it's mostly running punctuated by you picking up a weapon, firing it until it's dry, realizing that the thing is still alive and running again, repeat) but the final mission overall is significantly more impressive than one of its parts.

Predator has tons of neat crap to play around with and... that's basically the main draw.  You've essentially got infinite health and weapon energy given enough prep time ( :;-(:) and it's all about being sneaky and zapping stuff before it becomes a threat to you.  Very authentic, but surprisingly not as fun as advertised!  The vision modes open up a huge amount of fridge logic (human beings are warmer than the exhaust on a dropship's engines?  Predators didn't think of installing a vision mode that worked in low light and let them see both humans and aliens at the same time?  Really?) and the last fight consists entirely of "charge up shoulder cannon, take shots at long range, duck behind wall and turn on stealth while he lumbers forward in your general direction before completely losing track of where you were, retreat, repeat."  PROTIP: Collecting skulls as trophies does not unlock any achievements.

AvP2 also has the distinction of murdering my desire to play any more FPSes at the moment, so there is that.

What's with this LithTech Marathon thing?  Did you make an ill-advised Steam purchase or something?

oh, are there vents.  Vents vents vents.  Vents with lights, vents with ladders, vents with mesh screens, vents that connect to other, larger vents.  A xenomorph's life is spent primarily in vents, you know.

Tell me about it.
Grrrrr.

Played Serious Sam yet?  It gets to the point where they actually added in a sound cue making fun of it when you run backwards for more than 5 minutes.  When.  Not if.

Big game hunting is strikingly boring and I don't know why so many intergalactic bad guys are into it.  That's why Safari Joe doesn't have a girlfriend.

Nonsense!  Safari Joe does it all the time!

Bad FPSes make you hunger for more, good FPSes mean you can't stand another bite.  Makes sense.

In a pervertedly masochistic way.

The LithTech engine was a source of great misery for me in the forms of Shogo and Blood II years ago, rekindled only recently after seeing the Let's Plays of the former and the add-on mission pack of the latter, which somehow manages to be even worse than the original.  For some reason I feel compelled to play all games which use its various iterations (or at least all the first-person shooters - fuck you, Might and Magic IX!) to see just how bad some of them really are... provided that my computer can actually run them.  It's the "This tastes awful!  You have to try it!" impulse.

Looking at the list now I'm pretty sure I can skip shit like Marine Sharpshooter and most of the shovelware after F.E.A.R. (which, I suspect, is probably the best my computer can do for now), and if I start doing this in roughly chronological order the next game in the list would be... KISS: Psycho Circus.

...

Oh man you guys this is a licensed video game based on a Todd McFarlane comic book series based on a band that broke up seventeen years before the game was even released it's going to be completely awful and it's the greatest thing ever! :perfect:

I remember thinking the demo was pretty awesome when it came out. Then again, I was 13 at the time, and also had never actually heard Kiss, so I figured they were actually, you know, metal.

It also has a great Wikipedia article.
