Babble about a video game you are playing
« on: January 27, 2008, 02:42:02 PM »

So the other day I was dicking around in Psychonauts. Between the nebulously defined advancement systems, the uncertainty of knowing where you're supposed to be at any given moment, the educational yet monotonous things to collect everywhere, the ease of getting lost, and the fact that you're still having a pretty good time in spite of all this, they really seemed to capture the spirit of a summer camp very well in the hub level.

Coincidentally, I jumped into that game for the first time a week or so ago. I had heard so many good things about it that I bought a copy off a friend trying to unload his Xbox stuff. I haven't gotten very far, but most of the things you mentioned there were pretty annoying to me, especially the endless collecting. I asked on my blog if experiencing the cool design and story is worth the (thus far) super boring gameplay, and got one semi-yes response and one that essentially said, sure, but quit before the last level, because it's hell.

No More Heroes has been considerably more fun, despite having a pile of faults of its own. I'll probably wait till after I write it up to chat too much about it, but yeah, incredibly worthwhile game. Dust off your Wii!

The last level may take some trial and error, but it's doable.  It's just a huge spike in difficulty compared to any of the other platforming segments, and that will easily cause frustration.

In my most recent Dwarf Fortress project I managed to get iron ore, limestone, obsidian and a magma vent all on one map, enabling me to field an army of dwarves in steel plate armor wielding macuahuitls.  Said dwarves will later be engraving a massive Nazca-esque pattern into the nearby rocky plains, visible only from the top of the tower which they inhabit.  The fact that they can do all this while I'm alt-tabbing between writing and watching Let's Play videos is pretty nice.

The last level of Psychonauts was soul-crushingly, controller-throwingly frustrating. It was not good, but yeah, I guess the rest of the game made up for it.

No More Heroes is, if nothing else, absolutely dripping with a strange yakuza-meets-arcade-game style. The pacing's a bit weird, as well; the first ten minutes of the game is a thrilling assassination, and then suddenly you're collecting coconuts for some dude... What..?  :hurr:

What kind of Nazca lines will they be drawing?

Damned if I know, although the amount of space that I have is ever-lovin' huge.  Pixel art is a pretty solid choice, I figure, plus if there's some rock left over when the tower's done I can color it in.  Kind of a far cry from what the real Nazca lines were intended for, but considering that the last fortress I worked on had a "flood planet with lava" lever it's not like expectations are very high.

I'm doing the Shadow Hearts: From the New World thing. It's pretty good. It's got the best battle and fusion system the series has seen (stock and attack indicators, plus Shania has versatility Kurando desperately needed yet without the needless glut of useless transformations Yuri suffered). On the other hand, the Steller Chart stuff requires way more effort than needed for what you actually get in return, and raising the individual abilities of characters other than Shania ranges between 'kind of a hassle' to 'flat-out fuck stupid' (Mao).

The absolute worst part about the final levels of Psychonauts is how it pretty much threw everything you'd just learned in the game out the door.  Despite a heavily surreal atmosphere, it mostly consisted of precision accurate jumps while under fire and against a timer.  There were few things that required the use of your psychic powers and most of the time those were better skipped anyway.  It was just a mess of a level, complete with a rather unimpressive boss and Raz getting the Hyper Beam.

Rest of the game was  :wuv: though.

As for what I'm playing right now, I currently having ongoing games of:

Earthbound - Quirky and fun, but suffers from some early RPG tropes such as additional characters not leveling before you get them.

Deus Ex - I never really appreciated just how huge this game is.  There are a ton of levels that can easily take you a few hours each to complete, with multiple ways of accomplishing each objective.  The shooting aspect of the game is rather shit, but the conversations and hobo exploding features are top notch.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - The first real Castlevania game I've played since the NES days.  That's right, I've never had a proper playthrough of SotN.  Brings back memories.

Final Fantasy XII - This one comes and goes, as the game is epic and requires a huge time investment.

La Mulana - This game is goddamn brutal.  Quirky, and fun.

Eternal Daughter - Also difficult.  I keep hearing people say about how it's balanced and fair, but the controls feel loose and the main character is made of paper.

I Wanna Be the Guy - Yeah, well, you know.

I only had a problem with Poo. Paula is caught up enough by the time you go through Sanctuary #2 right after she joins, and Jeff has his whole Winters adventure. (I also usually have him gain a few extra levels by fighting the Caveboys outside of Stonehenge. They're worth good experience, they miss very frequently, and I could have sworn that they drop Picnic Baskets, but the internet claims that it's actually Double Burgers.)

I try to play this every now and again, but it's not long before I get frustrated and quit.

Totally taking that out of context!

Sounds like Diablo II and myself. I'll load it up and get my Necromancer up and running, then stall indefinitely around Act 3.

It took me 8 years to finally beat Diablo II.  It was worth it.

Right now I'm playing No More Heroes and Barkley's Shut Up and Jam! Gaiden.  I don't know which is better.

Shut Up and Jam Gaiden refuses to work for me, what with the whole "not being able to move and not accepting any sort of input once you get to the point where you can move, even when you're using the default control scheme" thing.  Damn shame, too.

I just got back to FF12 too.

I think one for the "unforgivable sins" thread is that a game that takes that long to play should have some kind of journal system to remind you where the fuck you are if you put it down for, say, a year.

I went back and finished picking up fucking chops in Archades because I'd forgotten I was already past that part; I was at the Archades save point and must have just gone back to buy supplies.

Uh, doesn't the map tell you what your current objective is, though?

I'm playing Advance Wars Days of Ruin and the Campaign is pretty much unforgivably awful.  Too easy, too boring, and too wordy.

Hopefully once I finish the CO unlocking slog, the trial rooms will be more interesting.

I played Mythos for a while.  Not all that much content there yet.  One can easily go through the first 20 levels of quests in less than a day of /played time...if the /played command feels like working.  What's there is pretty fun and presumably pretty similar to Diablo II, if all the endless user comparisons are any indication.

Exhausted the present content and wound up starting a game play guide for one of the classes, if only to curb a lot of the stupidity on the forum.  Joke's on me; the stupid and redundant stuff never actually goes away, it turns out.  ("Duh," I know.)

I really need to pull my head out of Visual Studio's ass for two days and work on Exquisite Knorpse.  Right now all I have is four rooms with an unnecessary number of meanies.

I'm playing Super Paper Mario. I'm enjoying the game's somewhat unusual sense of humor. Unusual in the sense that normally Mario games don't have fresh skeletons at the bottom of a pond where you helped a fish find a home there earlier.

Mega Mario is fucking awesome
