GTA:CW is really good.  Random violence isn't as much fun as in the major GTA titles, but driving fast like a big crazy man is still exciting (be sure to turn up Vehicle Camera Look-Ahead though).  The drug trade works quite a bit like most space-piratey-tradey games that I've designed; you can jack vans and steal their drugs or play the market yourself.  It is easy to make disgusting wads of cash.  I have been concentrating on only buying when there's a deal (weed and downers excluded as they're so inexpensive most of the time and the margin is so great on them), but definitely only selling when there's a deal.  Selling when prices are normal is a big waste of time.

I feel like cops are more common in this game than in most other GTA titles, because about 60% of the time when I jack a car, the cops start chasing me.  They always happen to be just a little bit off-screen.  Not a huge deal as they're easy to evade.

My primary complaint with the game is that it requires three hands.  Switching weapons requires hitting the touchscreen, as does throwing a molotov or grenade-type weapon.  There are a lot of events in the game that are time-sensitive and will require you to whip out your stylus and start rubbing and twisting and poking.  There's one particular mission where you're driving an ambulance and somebody in the back keeps dying, so you have to tap him in order to defib him back to life (and meanwhile you have three stars).  I ended up using my thumbnail because it'd take too much time to switch to the stylus.

Also the game is still funny.  Dark, as always, but funny.

God dammit, Valkyrie Profile.  Stop making guys out to be huge assholes and making me want to sacrifice their worthless lives to Nifelheim then on their dying breaths, they reveal that it was all for THEM.*

It's making it really hard for me to kill people.

With that kind of emotional manipulation it'd just make me want to kill every guy harder.

I've been playing The Witcher. It's, uh... I don't know. The prologue was really underwhelming, but it seems to be getting a bit better. The sex-card collecting game seems sort of unnecessary, sort of really unnecessary, and I'm tempted to play through the game celibate.

But not that tempted.

I'm not sure if that's actually possible.  You definitely have to choose between Triss and Shani, though I'm not 100% sure that the sexing that follows is mandatory.

Farcry 2 - What a game.

I never really got into the original game, or much of that series, but from what I hear the second one has nothing to do with the first.  An hour in, and the setting really feels like outer heaven - a mercenary retirement ground.

There are some ideas that really sell me.
1)  Weapons Jam and break.  The frustration of having your pistol's bolt burst is something that got me going, especially when the fallback options were a machete and a grenade launcher..

2)  the TIA effect - nuff said there

3)  The aiming system and the fact that where you aim does not nessecarly go.  This is about as realistic a FPS I can find in that regard.

Next thing, when I find a sniper rifle, I will actually have to take advantage of the mil-dot pattern.

In-between FFXII (which I only play if I have a decent stretch of free time) and Tierkreis (which I play to fall asleep or when out of the house), I've been playing Phantasy Star IV for the first time in nine years. It holds up really well, although I've never been able to memorize all of the spell names in the series.

(Is it obvious enough that I'm working at a desk again? I haven't posted this much in, well, ever.)

But if Japanese anime has taught us anything, it's that not being able to understand the words means the quality is better, no matter the actual quality of the (acting).

That's something that always got me.  How the fuck can you even tell how good the acting quality is?  Inflection means a completely different thing in that language, and even getting past that there's the fact that the difference between, say, their 'horrified' and their 'aroused' is very, very subtle.

I got Phantasy Star 4 for the Virtual Console, finished it once and found it to be one of the most generic JRPGs ever. The setting and characters are the only interesting thing about it. The dungeon design and battles are as boring as they can get.

If Sega decides to resuscitate the franchise they should learn a thing or two from the Final Fantasies. (Or make an awesome single-player version of PSO)

I am currently playing Phantasy Star Portable, which is basically just PSU on the PSP.  I am not very far into it but I've always thought the formula translates really well to a handheld.

Which is why I simply rate them against Western standards. Akira Kurosawa was logically more popular overseas than domestically, since his actors and techniques were adequately expressive compared to their Western counterparts.

Kabuff.

That is all.

(...okay, so that doesn't really make my position clear at all.  "Kabuff" is an awesome name.)
