MEANWHILE:

Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut*.

Yes, it is true.

:painful: Save me Alt+F4!

Everything everyone has said about this title, positive or negative, is entirely true. Everything.

Coming across a Knights Templar is my personal highlight.

All right, let's shatter some taboos here.

It is entirely possible that I hate myself, but I am making another attempt at Xenogears.  We will see how long it lasts this time.

Ultimately it's a deeply, but not fundamentally, flawed game with some really good things going for it.

Some quick thoughts:

+ Great music
+ Gorgeous anime cutscenes
- with voice acting which is terrible even by the standards of the day
- Environment graphics are godawful
+ But that's because they allow for 360-degree camera rotation
- Except in the places where they don't
- There is absolutely nothing positive to say about any of the platforming elements
+ Good battle system
+ Sprite-based graphics look pretty good in battle
- But fucking awful on the field
+ Deep, ambitious storyline
- with a lousy translation
- and sloooooooooow text crawl
- Too many twists layered on top of one another, to the point of incomprehensibility
+ Edgy, controversial content for the time
- which today just looks like a bunch of easy shots against the Catholic Church
- which Final Fantasy Tactics did better anyway
- and seriously, my God is this thing fucking pretentious
- and not nearly as smart as it thinks it is
+ Some good, interesting characters
- and Chu Chu
+ who gets crucified :holy:
+ Chicks dig giant robots
+ We.  Are men.  Of the sea!

Good luck.  I got as far as Billy Lee Black firing his daddy out of a giant gun before I collapsed under the sheer weight of all the dumb.

Environment graphics actually were really good by the standards of the day.  Remember the prettiest game at that time was No Textures Fantasy.  I was pretty amazed by how the first town actually looked kinda hand-drawn (this before "cel-shaded" became a common bullet point on the box copy).

I actually spent a lot of time jumping from townsperson's head to townsperson's head for the sheer hell of it.  Take that as you will.

Quote
+ Good battle system

- That is entirely ignored in favor of a much worse battle system.

Quote
+ Deep, ambitious storyline

- "Let's make a word-for-word Evangelion RPG."

P.S. I think you posted this one in the wrong topic.  Might wanna shuffle it over to the Babble On thread.

P.P.S. Which you managed to do while I was typing that.  Efficient!

P.P.P.S. Ha ha Xenogears conversation gets moved to "Babble-On" okay I'll shut up now.

I remember being unimpressed even then.  I thought FF7's prerendered environments looked a lot prettier.  Not nearly as good from a gameplay perspective, of course (which is where my next bullet point, the one about the camera, comes in).

All right, there is ONE positive thing to say about the platforming elements.

Still pretty ambitious for the day.

I played through the game a few times in high school. That is to say, more than twice, although I can't remember how many times exactly. Anyway, I have no idea how I did this: until my senior year, I was forbidden to play videogames on school days, I had to share my PSX with two brothers, and I spent as much time as I could out of the house visiting friends. I guess a few minutes here and there really add up.

But yeah, to a 15 year old who had seen parts of Evangelion but not enough to wonder why he liked it in the first place and was still being forced to attend Catholic mass, Xenogears was awesome.

One of my fondest memories was spending way too much time playing Speed (or whatever they called it in-game) on the Thames, for the bonus items. I think it comes back in the final city, but I can't remember.

Shit, I forgot that XG had a card game minigame.  I guess that makes it the progrenitor of it all.

Thanks, Xenogears.  Thanks.

Missed some obvious ones:

- and sloooooooooow text crawl

- which often involves long-winded, unskippable cutscenes between save points and bosses
- random villager talk has been extended to multi-paragraph speeches that don't actually have any more content than "The fire fiend will burn everything!" or "EASTMOST PENINSULA IS THE SECRET"
+ Sometimes you can run away from the villagers while they are talking
- Sometimes you can't

Anyway.  What strikes me about this game is how simple it would be to turn it from something that makes you want to throw your controller at the TV to something pretty damn good.  A new, more comprehensible and more concise translation, instantaneous text display, skippable cutscenes, modern graphics, and no jumping, and this thing would be WORLDS better.

Seems like this one'd be great for a fan translation.  Or the latest in Square Enix's very lengthy series of remakes.

Purchased Turok 2 & Xenogears on the same day.

Played Turok 2: Seeds of Evil for a grand total of six minutes, realized I was playing a slideshow, and never picked it up again.

Xenogears had giant robots, and was thus better than Final Fantasy.

 Good times!

Turok 2 was a really great exploran shooter if you could stomach ten hour levels.

Of course, I've beaten the first Turok with every piece of the Chronoceptor and 100% secrets.. so.. I might be a little mad.  :nyoro~n:

I have a comic where Turok abducts Quantum and Woody because the latter lets him in the door after he pretends he's delivering pizza.

Unless I gave it away for Dirty Santa, I'm pretty sure I still have the first issue of that Turok comic somewhere. It opens with him having torn the bodice off of a four breasted amazon and ends with him killing Bill Clinton.

Holy shit, I've actually read that before. I had completely forgotten about it.
