Computer-Related Blathering

QUICK AND STUPID COMPUTER QUESTION:

Is it more efficient when using Windows XP SP2 to have one partition for just the OS (a good deal larger than 5 gigs) and a separate partition for games and media and pornthings, or just throw everything into one big C: drive?

I like to keep partitions separated, for those occasions in which XP totally sucks and I have to reinstall it, that way I can just format the system partition without worrying about losing any important data. But that's just personal preference, I'm not sure if it affects performance.

I don't see how it would affect seek time since it's all on the same drive.  It might theoretically make a difference if you put the OS and the programs on different DRIVES (and you absolutely would if you were using a secondary drive for something intensive like movie rendering), but I don't see why it would impact performance on a single drive since you're still accessing different parts of the same hard drive.

Multiple partitions are commonly used as a "jailing" system on servers, to protect files on one partition in case security on another is compromised (OpenBSD does this extensively), but that won't matter on a standard Windows install either.

Thanks in part to this clever little device (specifically, the version that uses YubNub) I am well on my way to banishing all unnecessary use of the mouse. Next step: learning keyconfig and the functions therefor.

Now, the only problem I have is the number of Firefox extensions I have installed. If I'm not running Firefox and I open a URL from an outside location, Windows tells me it can't find the URL before the browser opens. And there isn't even a single one that can be effectively replaced with a Greasemonkey script.
