It is not often you see such a star on the plagiarizing field.

actually it turns out that copying from manga was the status quo in the 80s and early 90s, but nobody flipped out about it because 1.) nobody had the internet and 2.) manga was still an extremely fringe thing that comics-reading americans were only marginally aware of.

of course, plagiarism among artists in the dc/marvel world is still an ongoing thing, it's not like it ever went away.

Forget the '80's and '90's.  Every single panel of the first appearance of Batman is a swipe.

It took DECADES for people to realize the extent of Bob Kane's plagiarism.  The Internet is a wonderful thing.

Quite a few of those panels are pretty blatant copies (especially the "scenery" bits like the cars or the gas-tank), but there's also a number of comparisons that are a bit of a stretch.

At any rate, the Bill Finger stuff is actually far more damning in my mind.

Some stuff on there seems like he was obviously just copying it by looking at it, other stuff just seems to be "Here he drew a guy talking on the phone, and here is a picture of a guy talking on the phone!  Plagiarism!"

Take Vallely's night scene (detail on left), add a bat-silhouette, and you get Kane's splash panel for "Case of the Chemical Syndicate."

No, you don't. Not even kind of sort of. This is a complete and utter lie. Or the author is a moron.

To be fair, some of that stuff on the site is a bit of a stretch.  But any drawing of a car, the burglar with the driver's cap, contemplative Bruce Wayne, and Gordon at his desk are clearly swipes, but not necessarily "traces".  More like he set them down next to him and drew from that.  The site seems mostly conspiracy theory garbage at points ("Bob Kane claims he used Zorro as inspiration, but aside from them both being masked vigilantes there sees to be no connection!  FRAUD!")

Yeah I was going to post on this last night. Bob Kane sounds like a douche, but most of that is well within the fair realm of 'referencing'. It sorta ends up making the whole case sound weaker.

There's also the fact that styles back then just plain looked that uniform.

Also the key thing there is "Image", i.e. "80% of plagiarism from manga in the 90s was done solely by Rob Liefeld, when he wasn't plagiarising Jack Kirby, or drawing his own horrible disproportionate stuff"

At any rate, the Bill Finger stuff is actually far more damning in my mind.

Yeah, Kane didn't give Finger his due until after he'd died in the gutter.  And never gave Robinson his due at all (probably because Robinson didn't die in the gutter).

Regarding the "meh, it's not plagiarism" bits -- I'll acknowledge some are a bit of a stretch.  But a hell of a lot of them are obvious swipes.  And some of the "iffy" ones come from an issue of The Shadow Magazine that has exactly the same plot as Batman's first appearance.  There's also the fact that the characters' faces change from panel to panel.

It may fall more on the side of "reference" than "plagiarism", and everything he did was probably nice and legal.  But the fact is that he was a no-talent hack who copied other people's work until he could just eliminate the middleman and start signing his name to other people's work, and got rich off it while the real talent behind the character drank himself to death.

Some stuff on there seems like he was obviously just copying it by looking at it,

We like to call this sort of thing 'using reference' and it's primarily considered a criminal act by 16-year-old girls with deviantart galleries.

Even straight-up tracing of photos is varying shades of okay, depending on factors like how recognizable the photo is, if frankensteining is involved, what kind of deadline you're under, paid work vs. personal, etc.

Tracing other peoples' work, though, is risking having shit blow up in your face, and is tacky besides.

ORIGINAL CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL
(C)2010

Fun note: Searching DeviantART for "Original Character" produces predictably hilarious results.

I love/hate it when good artists put some huge watermark on their image to prevent "theft".

HAHA I WILL SHOW YOU ALL, NOW NOBODY CAN PROPERLY ENJOY MY ART! HAHAHA! TAKE THAT YOU THIEVES!

Hell, I woulda been overjoyed to find out someone had stolen my shit.

Part of the reason I don't watermark or put my name on any of my work is because only a great fool would steal from me when one could find a million way better artists. That said, I am like 10 times better than most of these people. People waste more energy frettering over if someone will take credit for their work then they expend actually making it. Whats more important to you, DA Artist? Creation, or acknowledgement and praise? Kids need to get over themselves, thinking that anyone would actually steal their work.

That said, I am friends with some artists who have had their work stolen, but they mostly laugh and report it as they should. Because, you know, when people steal like that it's pretty damn obvious.

Yeah, that shit unravels fast once someone sees the great art and says "Oh cool! I'd like to hire, you! Can you make me a..." and the retard can't produce.
