Falling asleep while driving is not fun.  I haven't fallen all the way asleep, but I have had to put the windows down, scream at the top of my lungs, and hit myself in the cheeks in order to keep my eyes open long enough to hit a rest area and zonk out in the driver's seat for a few hours.

I can safely say that making a two and a half hour drive on maybe three hours of sleep (after being up all day even!) is not awesome.  I would even go so far as saying that it's the anti-awesome.

But goddammit, I wanted to get home.

What did you want more: to be home or to be alive?

Dude, don't ever drive if you're at all sleepy, seriously. Like Iron Mongrel already pointed out, you're lucky to be alive.

I personally stopped driving while sleepy ever since I knocked a side-view mirror of a parked car with my own mirror while going at 40 mph. It was scary shit.

I have driven while drowsy.  I have also totalled three cars (including my own) and nearly killed myself.  These two facts are related.

This is pretty much what I did, minus the rest area (as the city I live in is maybe five miles away from it).  The first hour and a half or so was fine, but the monotony of the drive and the heat was just wearing me down.  Slapping myself every ten minutes and raging against the machine about the guy behind me with a loose headlight that kept flickering nonstop (PULL OVER AND FIX THAT SHIT I THOUGHT YOU WERE A COP AT FIRST  :MENDOZAAAAA:) kept me going until I hit the exit ramp for my city where I hit the point where your body is like 'You know what?  Fine.  Stay awake, asshole.  See if I care!' and I got home just fine.

Three hours later, the second wind wears off and I fall asleep.  Ten minutes later, the phone rings.  ::(:

One of the better tricks for keeping your eyes open is to cover one eye with your hand for about ten seconds, then the next.  Far more effective than winking or closing your eyes momentarily.

Is there some code of asshole ethics on the road that I'm unaware of?

For Dark Knight, I rode about 40 minutes out to the Muvico about a city away. My car's a piece of shit, but it's an interstate highway with almost no traffic. 8 PM arrival, 11:30 PM departure. I putt-putt'd along at 50-55 mph in the slow lane the entire way.

EVERY SINGLE FUCKING RETARD WITH THEIR BRIGHTS ON had to accelerate up the same lane(as soon as we could see one another, at least) up to my bumper, possibly flash their lights, and then pass me as if they had no idea that I wasn't going to A) get out of their way so they could go fast in the slow lane or B) magically speed up so that they wouldn't have to make a harrowing pass by a single car on an abandoned interstate highway.

What the fuck. It happened at least eight times.

What's the speed limit on this interstate highway? If it was 65, then you were going 20mph under the asshole average miles per hour, and that will not stand.

Is there only two lanes on this interstate highway? What were you thinking even taking up one lane? This interrupts the assholes bullet train mentality, and can only be offset by their ability to not use turn signals.

Your putt-putter's rear may also disgust and offend. Where's the spoiler? The custom plates? The back windshield wiper? The Bush/Cheney '04 sticker?

There was a generic blonde floozy behind me when I was driving back to Minnesota who was going like 90 miles an hour in the fast lane while I was cruising by most of the slow lane traffic 75 (speed limit was 70).  But I pull up next to this semi-truck who decides being passed by a minivan makes ones balls get sucked back into the pelvis and turned into ovaries, then proceeds to match my speed.  So when this blonde speeds up behind me and starts making all the road rage gestures because I didn't put my foot through the floor to speed up, I opt to just stay side by side with the truck.

Couple minutes of this and she pulls onto the shoulder to pass by me and we sail right by a state trooper, who was like 'OH HELL NAW!'.

Sweet justice.  I tried to coax the semi driver in to sounding his horn, but he was not feeling the moment like I was.

Well, that problem can be solved by going to sleep earlier the night before. I guess the day will feel shorter and there probably won't be enough time to get all things done, but at least they won't be a danger to other people on the road.

Plus getting enough sleep can put everyone in a better mood!

People who think every problem has a really simple and obvious solution should probably go in the "pet peeves" thread.

If you're nodding off such that there's significant danger of falling asleep at the wheel, will you even be fit for work upon arrival?

So, sleep and get fired, or drive there and die, or drive there and get fired.  Awesome.

So lets talk tailgaters.  I'm living in the largest flatlands in north and when I go into town, there is this same goddamned blue car that tailgates me.  I slow down, and she tail gates me.  I psyche her and she tailgates me.  I vroom to two goddamned hundred and the cunt still is on my arse.

On a long road

Two lane

Broken yellow line

empty..

I don't know what the fuck it is, but somehow I almost always miss the Broadway exit off the I-10.

Now, I grew UP on that route.  Coming from Mom's place in Prescott to Gran's in Tempe, I must have traveled that road over a hundred times.  So there's no damn reason I shouldn't know it.

In college, this was a recurring problem -- I'd grab rides down to the valley with other people, and miss the exit and we'd be driving past the mall before I realized I'd fucked up and we needed to get off at the next exit and turn around.

Granted, all that was before I started driving on my own.  And since I've been driving, I've favored other routes.  But still and all, on the few occasions I HAVE taken the I-10 all the way, I've usually missed my exit.  I got it right last night for a change, but then fucked it up tonight.

It's just weird, dammit.
