QuantumLink, bitches! 1987 represent!

Yeah. I started on fucking AOL before AOL was AOL. Suck on that kind of stupid.

Also, there was a hitchhiker's guide mu* once upon a time I used to kick around a lot on back around 95ish. And TinyTIM. Was that you there, Zara, or was that a different Zarathruster? Whatever, it made me fail the shit out of my second semester. Or the drugs, alcoholism, and affairs with older married women. Something like that. But I'm going to blame the Internet and spill my heartrending story to the Times.

I...remember "lamer..."

...and webrings, before yahoo acquired webrings.org...

...and the Ate My Balls web ring residing therein.

Oh, and once upon a time, ISPs used to offer usenet access, without charging an extra $10/mo or trying to offload your access to one of their new business partners.

Also, MP3s totally sucked, because s3m, it, mod, and other file formats were way faster to download, and ran in modplug, which ran way better than winamp, which was also a fat bloated piece of shit compared to the new and shiny k-jofol.  (Nad?  What?)

GeoCities vs FortuneCity vs Tripod? GO!
I remember their ads being defeatable with a <noscript> tag.  Also, no Angelfire or Xoom?

Ah, Angelfire. Possibly the worst place to host images, equal only to Tripod.

And I knew of no one that used XOOM. Hell, I personally knew more script kiddies on cjb.net than anyone on XOOM.

I...remember "lamer..."

Which actually originated in the 1970's or earlier, according to my dad.

I think I may have tried to make a xoom page.

That's what I did instead of having friends.

I got hooked on the internet when I left home at the age of 17 to a remote down in the deepest darkest prairies just after 9-11.

There, I learned that my link to my real friends who were funny, decent, and not scary were 56k away

Could not reliably distinguish between "Internet" and "computer" until I got one of my own, at age 11 (2000), with a dilapidated old piece of shit computer with an even more dilapidated old piece of shit 14.4k modem. I was of course familiar with computer usage, but between game-playing friends and computer games playable offline (the one I played most, I discovered recently, stopped being shareware). By 2002 I was using it regularly for social purposes. Some hole-in-the-wall Zelda fan site (which apparently is also still around). Using the same nick I still use. I think it was around 2003 that I started using the exact same signature I'm using now.

I haven't bothered to hide any of the stuff I did back then, for the same reason that I have not attempted to erase all existing copies of family home movies.

oh man I loved warpath

Hmm. I'm not sure when I began my internet adventures. Before 2000, I used it primarily to hunt down share- and freeware. ca. 2000, I started using it socially; I became involved in a community based around The Sims. Keep in mind, I was only 10 at the time. From there, I joined the forum at Home of the Underdogs, and later discovered Solidsharkey.com. In 2003, at age 13, I joined Pyoko. Here, I used the moniker 'Fredward'* for the first time. At this point, I was solely interested in the acquisition of cartoon pornography; though I did try posting once, Elfin yelled at me. After that, I shut up for about three years. Since then, I have discovered 4chan, anime, torrents, and inner peace.  :perfect:

I think that about covers it.

*for the curious, this has absolutely no relation to my real name, which is neither Fred nor Edward nor, indeed, Fredward. Actually, as I recall, in a thread about gay names, my real name was one of the first to come up. Try to guess what it is!  :wakka:

'Fredward'

I thought you gave yourself that name as an homage to Remo Williams.

Could've sworn cjb.net was a redirection thing like dyndns/no-ip and not a host.  Anyway, the cool thing about xoom was that you could host whatever you wanted ad-free, as long as you appended _XMCM/ to the end of your base directory.  So if you had members.xoom.com/arc/someFileThatWasntIndex.html, you could stick a file in members.xoom.com/arc/_XMCM/someFileThatWasntIndex.html and it'd show without the top frame, or whatever bullshit xoom used to put on user pages.  I think that exploit pretty much held until nbci bought xoom out and outright fucking ruined the entire site (not just the exploit) for everyone.

Oh, man. I just remembered having written a Sonic the Hedgehog / Megaman X / possibly also Final Fantasy crossover and taking it all completely seriously. Starring a robot dragon who knew kung-fu. Later I tried to re-write it, but with angst.

Speaking of the old days of #verge, I met McDohl today. He got his car towed a whole bunch. I bought a lot of beers he refused to drink and gave a tour of 1up. Hopefully that makes up for it enough that he won't post all those old IRC logs.

Fuck, that reminds me that I'm going to be in SF next weekend.  Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be in the city long enough to stop by 1up HQ, unless Sharkey wants to pick me up from the airport.
