I don't think threatening people with a Class D Felony (equivalent to manslaughter) is really appropriate if you're trying to protect the populace though.  If they came out and said they were afraid of people fucking with the cleanup crews, I'd feel better, except it might give people the idea to fuck with the cleanup crews.

That's all pretty accurate, yeah.  I was mostly just tired of so, so many people hammering the 65 foot thing like it's some sort of freedom-slicing series cutting lasers, and not the reasonable precaution it is on its face.

Well, like you said, the chances of that reasonable precaution not being used to conveniently enforce a media blackout are slim.  Anderson's not usually a lazy douchebag, so I'm going to assume that if he's pissed off that he has to ask permission to go report on the spill, it's not because he doesn't want to ask, it's because he's not getting that clearance.  That's worth getting your panties up in a bunch about, but I guess it's politically safer to go "BAWWW 65 FEET" than to go "BAWWW I'M BEING CENSORED BY THIS GUY'S OFFICE", even if it is more disingenuous.

...okay I take that back, he is a little bit lazy.

The worst case scenario is bullshit. Turns out there's a huge amount of methane bubbling up from the oil spill. And if it breaks out all at once?

SUPERSONIC TSUNAMI.

http://daviddegraw.org/2010/06/will-the-bp-oil-spill-set-off-a-supersonic-tsunami/

but wait! there's more! http://www.helium.com/items/1882339-doomsday-how-bp-gulf-disaster-may-have-triggered-a-world-killing-event

so basically we Dug Too Deep. hopefully we at least avoid the tentacle demons.

Well, at least that Doomsday thing is bullshit, so that's a relief.

While it's true that there are methane bubbles (and methane ice) beneath the ocean floor, they are not about to erupt from Gulf and destroy all life on Earth. This morning I spoke with two Earth scientists, Dave Valentine of UC Santa Barbara and Chris Reddy of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, who study methane and oil seeps from the sea floor. Valentine has just been out to the Gulf to study the methane levels there, and told io9:

"During our recent cruise to the Gulf we observed significantly elevated levels of methane at water depth greater than 2500 feet, in the vicinity of the Deepwater Horizon spill site. While the total quantity of methane and other hydrocarbons is enough to cause problems with the regional ecosystem, there is no plausible scenario by which this event alone will cause global-scale extinctions."

Fun look at BP's old board game from the seventies

While reading all of this info about this game, I can't help but recall the scene from Wag the Dog where the public relations people hire Willie Nelson to write a archived song to be used a theme for their fake war hero.  For some reason.

When talking about the BP media blackout, the whole "job security" angle really falls apart when they start bothering people who aren't even near the shore.  BP is just trying to cover their own ass, and that's all there is to it.  I fail to see how, exactly, reporting or taking pictures would cause problems for the clean up crews, unless BP was having their workers do things they weren't supposed to. Like ignoring safety concerns for workers

I don't know. The ocean floor is not a place I'd trust any expert to be able to give an opinion on without a very thorough search and analysis of the rock.

Zara, let me just say that from the outset I thought the methane bubble thing was bullshit. Still do.

People LOVE doomsday scenarios like few other things.

That helium website pays users per hit. That asshole who made that article is making money off of making shit up. He also has written articles saying that North Korea caused the oil leak along with some right wing nutjob articles.

So presumably everybody's heard by now that the leak's plugged -- at least for the time being.  Not out of the woods yet, and they still have to finish the relief wells, but the fact that BP's being as optimistic as they are would indicate they've got some confidence it'll still be plugged in a week.

I've already seen journalists slip and say there's no oil in the Gulf any more.

Like if you're not currently being punched, then all those bruises don't really matter.  Jeez, Catloaf's battered wives theory gains ground yet again.

Which is impressive considering its tremendous trouble with stairs and doors.

BP says the cap's holding the pressure. Is there independent verification? I'm not saying BP has lied in the past, I'm just saying BP has lied a LOT in the past.
