World Sippy Cup; or how I learned to love the Vuvuzela
« on: June 15, 2010, 12:03:29 PM »

Oh hey we don't have Thread subtitles anymore. Oh well.

ANYWAY.

Anybody else watching the planet's largest sporting event?

I'm really not much of a soccer guy (You know... one of those "I watch just about every sport... but only during the playoffs" whores) but the Portugal vs. Cotê d'Ivoire match today was pretty damn awesome. Both teams were really pushing themselves. T'was a punishing match for all concerned. That group is hilarious... I for one CANNOT WAIT to see Brazil vs the DPRK; that's going to be some kind of epic nonsense.

This Cup looks really interesting, seeing as there's been a LOT of surprise tie matches [joke about all soccer games having 0-0 scores goes here], so we might see quite a few upsets.

Of course Brazil will probably just crush everyone mercilessly as usual, but there should be some fun along the way.

Brazil played pretty badly. 2-1 vs North Korea.

I always liked football. Still, this simulator is unfortunately accurate.

Huh. This really is turning into a tournament of upsets.

Good! Keeps things interesting.

EDIT: The usual jokes aside, I think 2 goals is the current high-water mark for scoring so far in this cup. There really haven't been any blowouts yet.

The poor Socceroos ;_;

I love World Cup time!  I keep tabs on every game and before every tournament just flood myself with knowledge of the teams and everything.

The team names are great!  The Nigeria Super Eagles, the New Zealand All-Whites, the Australian Socceroos!  You can't beat it.

And if you're not sure who to root for, here's a handy guide!

Glad I woke up early today to see the All Whites tie the game in the last minute of play.  They're all right!

I maintain my right to root for the DPRK unironically. I bet their players are very nice people!

I do like how the US player that scored the goal was willing to admit that it was most likely due to the new ball.

We have an office pool on the Cup. We also made a dummy entry based entirely on the FIFA rankings just for fun.

Guess who's last?... yep, the FIFA ranking.

I know Portugal needed a good goal margin to lock up their chances at advancing, but considering their opponents are the only team that literally has a non-zero chance of facing a firing squad when they get home, maybe the Ports could have laid off a bit after the fourth or fifth goal?

They're gonna want to watch out! They might get 5 goals and be forced to lose!
