Your Comfort Spot: Console vs PC... Kinda.
« on: June 16, 2010, 10:06:40 PM »

Alright, so I've had this conversation a lot with folks and I'm wondering where people stand...

So people tend to have a certain love for console gaming. Playing on a couch with a simple device, playing on a big TV thats 10 feet away -- while others tend to hate being disconnected from their computer. So what this topic ISN'T

* A conversation about the merits of each platform
* A Mac/PC thing. Macs are computers. For your personals.
* Any sort of factual discussion. This entirely about individual preferences.
* Anything really then a question as to where you wanna sit. Your desk or out in your living room!

So a few assumptions

*You can run a game on either platform with optimal controls. YES, MOUSE AND KEYBOARD ON CONSOLE.
*You have a PC that can run games well and reliably

Also the if you're a laptop guy who's on the laptop on your couch all the time anyways, I guess you got nothing to add to this!

Anyways I'm probably overcomplicating the question, but I hope you all get the idea. Personally I HATE being separated from my window to the internet. I don't even play games in proper full screen mode so I can quickly alt-tab. I never buy remakes and ports I can emulate, not out of cheapness, but out of convenience. My console is that out of the way thing I have to go into another room and lug my laptop with me to use. When I'm in my room with it, it uses up my desktop's monitor, which is annoying. To me, the console is a means to an end to play certain games, and is always my secondary choice of platform. In a perfect world, I could plug my PS3's HDMI cable right into my computer and get a lagless, resizable window I could use to play games. My desk is my home and where I go to relax.

So how do you all feel on the topic? How do you prefer to game?

It's a gross oversimplification but it works 90%+ of the time:

PC for American games.
Console for Japanese ones.

Europe and other countries tend to go on a case-by-case basis.  UbiSoft can't port to PC to save its fucking cheese so its crap can stay on consoles.  Non-Japanese Asians tend to be completely unequipped to develop for consoles.  Etcetera.

Well you've kind of abstracted the only differences left between the mediums.

I think you need to define the question more because the choices seem to be "console that works like a PC" and "PC that works like a console".

Unless this is a "meat-friend vs. net-friend" debate, which is still only answerable on a case by case basis.

.... It's a question about where you're more comfortable dicking around, abstracting out all the unnecessary elements.

OH.  Okay, the central theme of this topic was kind of buried in there, but I get it now.

Optimally I will be somewhere with meat people that I can punch in the face, yes.  Even if I'm just playing Xenogears.

...

Okay especially if I'm playing Xenogears.

(And before you say that still doesn't answer the question, people are not invited to be anywhere fucking near my desk.)

I can't decide between the two, but fortunately I don't have to, because I like handhelds best.

I am more comfortable playing games on console than on PC. Even when everything on PC is working optimally, the fact that I'm on a PC causes very low-level stress during a game. I have always been a console gamer above a PC gamer.

However: I actually spend more time with my PC than with my game consoles. I spend more time dicking around on the internet than I spend playing games. When I'm online, questions of comfort don't even enter the equation—using my PC at my desk is the only place I'll do that. I might grab Julie's laptop out of desperation if I need to hit up GameFAQs mid-game and don't want to go in the other room, but generally laptops provide such a diminished experience that I won't use them to surf.

Since your hypothetical obviates the question of my own hardware's qualification, I voted living room/consoles because I presume that a laptop that doesn't drive me up the fucking wall must exist, and I am granting it to myself for the purpose of this evaluation. In which case, yeah, consoles win hands-down.

I sit in a swivel chair on an L shaped desk.  My computer monitor is on one wing of the L, my TV is on the other, and I just turn to whichever I'm doing at any given time.

I guess that technically means PC wins since I am always at my PC even when playing console games.

The TV in my room is not in an optimal position such that I can play games on it comfortably and still look at my monitors. This is why when I'm playing on a console I always stare at them from a 45º angle while keeping a straight line of sight with my monitors.

I do have a swivel recliner, so at least I have you beat on that.

Handhelds I think. Play on the go and save lots of money. Oh and now in 3D!

basically as soon as I stopped having a tv in my bedroom where my computer is my console gameplay went way way down. I'm kinda neurotic about always wanting to be connected. when I go to another room to play a game on the xbox I'm just doing that, but when I'm playing on the pc I can also be looking at IRC and responding to people on AIM etc.

I'd say console-at-computer (since it is my current setup), but honestly, the instant I can afford to put a couch or cheap futon in this room of mine I'm leaping at that opportunity the first chance I get.

This is pretty much what I do.  I bought an LCD TV recently that has become my primary monitor, but when I'm consoling it up I just toggle my desktop over onto my old monitor.  I dual-monitor when I'm working.

When I am playing on my console, I alternate between sitting on my bed and using my knee chair.

I'm more comfortable at my PC, but prefer to play games on console.... which usually leads to dicking around on the internet rather than playing the games I own.

I'm another dual-monitoring person here, with an adapter box hooking up my console to the secondary monitor. I'm still more comfortable with consoles than PCs just because I usually like the games better.

I have the least comfortable computer chair in the world, so I'm definitely a couch kind of guy.

Who would want to do that?  Mouse+Keyboard while sitting on a couch sounds awkward and uncomfortable as fuck.

Anyway, this whole topic makes me uncomfortable.

I like to chill on my comfy couch with a blanket and a sidetable with a snack and soda.  Consoles 4eva

Also, when I play on any console rather than on my computer, my dogs don't try to stuff themselves onto my lap and make me lose.  They just share the couch and blanket and have nappies.
