(One of the original posts)

The level is being designed to be a single, linear path. You can make your area a giant multilinear landscape if you want—I know I plan to—but your area should have a single definite start and finish. It should not be possible to leave your area except at the finish, and it shouldn't be possible to leave your area without having picked up the ability you've chosen or been assigned.  You can therefore assume a player who enters the starting screen of your area already has all the items from the previous areas. You can take away granted abilities as long as you return them before the end of your area. If you want to include a custom tileset or background—again, I plan to—please post with the tileset number that you're replacing as soon as possible. So, for example, I'm going to replace tileset 251 with my own creation, so don't use those snowflake dandelion things in your level.

Vampires vs Werewolves is gradually ending, but there's no telling how long it's going to peter out for. I think it's slowed down sufficiently to ask people to start seriously putting mouse-pointers to tiles, though, so you have 17 days in which to make at least one room and send it to me, I mean, one room, c'mon, I did that just to post this topic. Anyone who has not sent in one room by that point won't be participating, and your items will be redistributed to more deserving homes.

After all the areas are submitted, I'll contact each designer with the instructions for his or her second area. Don't forget that Friday wants you to make a sub-area and a programmer's room! The actual due date for those is going to be a lot farther out, though, since none of that needs to be in the level before the interstitial portion begins.

17 DAYS ISN'T MUCH TIME!
Unfortunate, isn't it? I fixed the turn-order 11 days ago, though, so you had a whopping 28 days in which to make the level. You arguably had more than that, if you'd taken the initiative the way Yyler did—I may not have completely fixed the order of abilities at that point, but voluntary projects like this have a funny way of ensuring that completed, submitted levels take precedence over any theoretical organizational charts. Anyway: you had a month in which to create; you still have almost 3 weeks. I find that a looming deadline has a remarkable impact on my motivation and productivity. Hopefully you will, too.

The lesson here: I shouldn't try to dance if I'm just going to step on toes. But seriously: please make your level. I want you to be in this.

BUT WHAT IF I'VE NEVER USED THE KNYTT STORIES EDITOR BEFORE?
It's easy! First, you'll want to download this brief PDF manual. It will tell you everything you need to know in order to make a functional area. If you want to make an area that's actually satisfying and fun to play, it may be useful to play a couple levels. You can also read this thread for some very specific local opinions. If you have any problems or questions, please feel free to ask in the thread or in #finalfight, assuming somebody with the relevant knowledge is in there.

School's been keeping me pretty busy the past few weeks, but finals time is this coming week, so I should be free afterward to finish up my section.

Oh hey, I know whose level you have open in the screenshot.

The only guy who's done, that's whose.

Though thanks for reminding me that I wanted to fine tune a few things.

I need a small area (try to keep it under 20 screens) and then also a single screen for your "programmer's room". In this room you should include up to 3 signs, with a message from you to the player.

The small area is going to be put in the final area in a big collaboration thingie just like Brentai did last time. This is going to be the endgame, so you're encouraged to make challenging rooms, but it's not required.

Unfortunate, isn't it?

EDIT: No, seriously though.  The last things I heard from Newbie are "You'll have four weeks after the end of VvW" and "Don't think because yyler has some extra free time and creativity on his hands that you need to freak out and try to catch up."

And now its "You had four weeks from an arbitrary point I set almost two weeks ago" and "If you had only freaked out more when yyler submitted his level, you'd be okay!"

Also, that comment up there is pretty fucking dickheaded imo.  I'm trying not to get nasty here but I'm pretty pissed off about it.

I'm working through the holiday weekend, probably doing overtime all of next week, and then the next weekend I hope to be moving.  It's not that it's impossible for me to take any time out, it's more that I'm more keen on relaxing with something mindless like Beat Hazard when I do than on dealing with another deadline that got suddenly moved up without warning.

So no, I'm going to just hop off here before things get any worse.  I bear no ill will towards this project and look forward to playing it, but if I don't quit now you guys are going to get something half-assed at best and outright hateful trolling at worst.

Once Vampires vs Werewolves ends, you will have two weeks in which to finish your area and send it to me.

lrn2read

I suppose it is 9 days to July 12, but I am sure your extenuating circumstances will let Newbie go a bit easy, considering that isn't even the two weeks he promised -- and the entire thing isn't supposed to be done for three weeks, one of which is Friday's part, which technically comes later than the main stuff.

But four weeks is coming from nowhere so far as I can tell.

I've got an idea for the ending area. If nobody else wants it, I'll take it.

However, I prefer Brentai do it, since he did such an amazing job last time. But if he doesn't want to work that hard again, that's perfectly understandable.

My thoughts right now are that we shouldn't have repeats of people doing the ending area.

...I also feel like we shouldn't have repeats of director, but Newbie's kind of so firmly stuck in the role now that it'd take a team of miners and the lubrication of a thousand virgins watching Orlando Bloom to extract him.  So whatevs.

One alternate suggestion I do have for Doin' It Different this time is that each submitter sends in two copies of the level, one full and one with the rooms he/she wants hidden already marked out.  This way each designer has some control over what the next designer gets to see and some possibility of deeper collaboration arises.

But it looks like we're going with parallel development, which is also cool.  Any chance of getting that timeframe extended to 3-4 weeks?  There's some... existing evidence for particularly feverish designers taking up that many man-hours.

Kazz, you can have the yellow key. If Bleck wants to use it, too, we'll double up the same way we did with the purple key in EK2.

As much as I (and my fiancée) would love for me to not be the director, I know that I can rely on myself to meet my expectations and to actually see this thing through. All it will take for me to pass the reigns on is for somebody else to step up and say with conviction that they're going to do it this time... and then to actually do it.

And yeah, three to four weeks is fine.

I should have known that the indiscretions of 4:00 AM on a work-night would catch up with me sooner, rather than later. It seemed like the pace in VvW had gotten kind of glacial, and considering our history, I felt it was important to strike while the iron is hot—and then I went off half-cocked instead.

So: the July 19th due date is out the window, particularly for people who are still in VvW. It would warm the cockles of my heart if everybody who actually plans on participating had submitted by then, but really all I need is your starting room, your ending room, and an outline of the rooms you plan to occupy... but I'm not even going to ask for that! All I'm asking for is one room. If you can make one room and send it to me, that shows me you're committed to this. It doesn't even have to be a room that actually winds up in your final submission: I'm only asking for a placeholder.

But, uh, if you're capable of making a placeholder... why not make the starting and ending rooms for your area, use empty rooms to mark off the boundaries of "your territory" that you're going to build in, and send that in, instead? It'd make my job a lot easier.

Meanwhile, if you've ever made a game before or a Knytt Story or contributed to a previous knorpse, you can just ignore all this altogether because you're golden. You've proven yourself and you don't have to jump through any hoops or adhere to any structure, if you don't want. It's there for you, if you need it—personally, I never make anything until like an hour before the deadline—but you can ignore it if you prefer.

Newbie, please remind me again to which email address you want the stuff sent that goes to you? If it's a placeholder you want, then a placeholder I shall deliver.

Putting this idea into action; I'm using tilesets 92, 229, and a modified 230, and I'm claiming #176 to create something original. This post will be edited if I decide I need anything more!

Using Gradients (NOT TILESETS) the following:

120
121
175
237
60
134
240
239
234
232
158

I tried to use shitty backgrounds that nobody would use. Hopefully nobody wants piss yellow or puke orange or whatever the else shitty backgrounds I rewrote.

I might use one or two more, but that's the brunt of them.

I've been meaning to take note of which tilesets are used in the submissions I've received from Yyler and Bongo Bill, but it's been a busy weekend. Keep up the good work, guys; we're making solid progress.
