Hot Dog Ettiquette?
« on: July 05, 2010, 01:08:34 PM »

So today I went to a hotdog shop. One specializing in such. Well on the wall they have a rule of Hot Dogs and when I ordered it my usual way of hotdog onion ketchuip and mustard they looked at me like I was doing something wrong like not breathing. So what do you folks feel about this.

Edit: Yes I realised I spelled Etiquette wrong after I submitted it.

I've heard this before, and I had to google it, and I guess it makes sense?

But it doesn't call for this:
Quote
People get pretty emotional over the ketchup question. Mel Plotsky opened our discussion by describing the condiment as a "catchall of garbage." Over at crosstown rival Vienna Sausage, they refer to ketchup as the "K-word." If you go into an authentic hot dog joint and ask for ketchup on your hot dog, the counterman will pause and look you in the eye. He may or may not say, "Ketchup?" with a tone of disbelief. But you may be certain what he's thinking: "Behold this creature that walks like a man. It wants ketchup on its hot dog."

What a douche.

You can fix that, you know.

Anyway, I voted "Depends", but really the only hot dogs I ever eat are Chili Dogs, so ketchup doesn't really come up that often.

I don't put ketchup on my hot dog (nor "catsup", as Dad insists on spelling it), because I don't put anything on my hot dog. Salt and pepper were pretty much the only condiments I deliberately applied to my meals until I played EarthBound, but I still tend to eat things plain rather than add anything that doesn't come by default.

Like James Bond convincing everyone that "shaken, not stirred" is the proper way to drink a martini (despite the fact that he orders it that way because he knows he's drinking shitty vodka, and in fact it's kind of an insult to the bar to do that), Dirty Harry has convinced people from the East Coast and especially Chicago that it's improper to put ketchup on a hot dog past the age of 18... despite the fact that Dirty Harry is from San Francisco and arguably insane.

To be fair though, I generally only put ketchup on hot dogs to mask the flavor of an awful hot dog, so yeah, I guess that could be seen as an insult too.

In the days of yore, when I actually ate meat and wheat, I learned a few things.

Hot dogs get mustard and onions. Sausages get the same. Some will argue that a good sauerkraut makes all the difference, but I've found it makes the bun soggy and my farts smell like egg afterwards.

Ketchup goes on the fries.

FYI, in hot dog eating competitions, they soak the buns in water so the hot dog can slide down easier.  :themoreyouknow:

The whole thing is pretty absurd. Personally though I don't like loaded hot dogs unless it's like a chili dog. I just use ketchup and make everyone sad. For godsake it's guts filled with ground up everything. This shit ain't gourmet cooking.

I can see going to a place that prepares their own from scratch and offers a variety of toppings hating you for going ketchup. Short of that though it's almost required.

So in short: For those limpdicky things you get in convenience stores and 8-packs, use ketchup.  For an all-beef delicacy prepared and served by an actual dude, use mustard.

It's like anything. You put ketchup on chicken nuggets, but if any of you have ever put it on grilled chicken you're monsters and I hate you.

I can't stand ketchup on anything.  That stuff is vile.

As for hotdogs, a layer of spicy mustard then chili is incredible.

I never put anything on a hotdog other than a bun, which isn't on the hotdog, the hotdog is in the bun.  So, yeah.  Nothing.  A good hotdog needs nothing more than itself.  Fuck all of you and your vinegar-based* sauces!

*As stated before, I HATE HATE HATE vinegar and all that inherits even the slightest amount of it's taste.

Came in to post this. Good meat, add mustard. Crap meat, ketchup to get it down. Of course, use chilli, cheese and onion when available for a Sonic the Hedgehog-approved treat!

Only if it gets the same fiery passion as your arguments about BBQ sauce.

ALL MUSTARD IS GREAT. THERE, I SAID IT. Seriously. I love the shit and have about six different bottles of mustards in my fridge right now. I even like the hotter spicy shit on plain tortilla chips sometimes as a dip.
