Needleman, Ink
« on: July 16, 2010, 05:57:59 AM »

Alright. So I've decided on my tattoo design and placement and all that.  But I'm kind of a pansy when it comes to pain. Now, I had a biopsy with electric needles before. I assume it'd be like that, right?
Is there any advice for me or anything useful I should know? I'm not really sure who here actually has a tattoo.

Apparently only five of us. Anyway, important things:

1) Does "placement and all that" include the place where you're getting it done? That's just as important. Make sure you know people that are happy with the work and meet up with the guy that would be doing it ahead of time. If you can't feel comfortable just talking to him, you will not feel comfortable getting stabbed by him.

2) Bring your iPod. 90% of places will let you put your own music on if you just ask.

3) When they pen it on, be sure to critique it. This is something going on you for life. If you feel like you're the kind of person who wouldn't speak up because you think it's a little crooked or not quite the right size, trust me, you will spend the entire time thinking about that and it will not be fun.

4) Breathe. Always do this though. Even after it's done.

The pain depends a lot on location, as well as how heavy-handed the tattoo artist is with the gun. If they press harder, the needles penetrate deeper, which hurts more, but makes the tattoo resist fading longer, which means less touch-ups in the long run. Best places to get a first tattoo would be any place with a fair amount of muscle, so arms, legs, etc. Worst place to get a first tattoo would probably be the side of your torso, or anywhere on your skull(although that's just a bad place to get a tattoo in general).

And yeah, definitely try to meet people the artist has worked on before, see if they're happy with the results.

Well, I know of this place, guy there has done all of my buddies twentysome tattoos. He also used to work at this place, so I figured I'd go there.  It's good, clean, and has gotten some recognition. Figured I'd check it out and talk to the guy.

Lottel I'm getting mine done at Tantrics by Bruce who does a great job. Been a real family friend for a long time though he will take your design and tweak it a bit though he will show you exactly what he wants to do with ahead of time. He is a bit cheaper then some of the places in this city though.

Fun fact: the Pretty Princess tattoo spot (upper surface of the foot) is one of the most painful.

My friend just recently got her first tattoo. It's on her lower abdomen going down to her crotch.

She had to stop partway through the colouring process and plans on having it finished later.

People that have met me in real life know that if you look at my hips, you know the exact dimensions of my hip bone. Notably it was my first, but getting tattooed there is by far the most painful I've gotten so far, and I hear foot near toes is even worse.

I can, in fact, verify that he did NOT get the tattoo. :)

We're buddies IRL.

So, I've been meaning to buy replacements for a lot of my piercings for a while now but have been weary of ordering online for fear of shoddy product. The only local places charge out the ass though so if anyone knows good sites for that I'd appreciate it.

I'll ask around at work today, I can also probably find you some stuff locally that will be cheap if you don't mind paypaling me moneys to buy you stuff.
