Trajan is the Movie Font
I remember seeing this  months ago on Drawn!, but I didn't realize I nearly quoted it word-for-word.

Mostly I only watch movies with the gf now because I can predict the plot twists to her.

"See, there's going to be a bomb in this scene. They're showing people leaving a graveyard in their cars, they never do that in film unless something's happening."

Oh yeah. That's a fun activity.

I can even predict dialog, especially if the writer is a "clever" type (read: Joss Whedon) sometimes.

But yeah.

"See, that comic relief guy is about to get shot from behind, because he's facing the main character and smiling after having just done something right, and the music is happy."

"See, the monster is just about to pop out, because the music stopped."

"See, they're about to be in a car accident, because it's showing dialog in a car that has no meaningful plot development in it."

"See, the main character is going to be saved right here at the last minute by whatever because the bad guy is standing above him/her."

Not that it's hard to predict such shit.

There are better ways to use complementary colors than just slapping them together side-by-side, man. When you mix complementary colors together, they become muddy; trace shades of orange/purple/green would dull the shadows of an otherwise monochromatic blue/yellow/red subject and cause the brighter spaces to stand out, and even glow.

Yeah, but Warm Highlights = Cool Shadows is one of those things you learn on the first day of a painting class. The douchebag Lottel is talking about skipped that class.
And not only that, they don't talk about the side by side thing. They just talk about "Hey! There's orange AND blue here! Just the fact that these two colors are here together as well as everywhere else is something to point out to everyfuckingbody you talk to!"

There's a difference between "Art just uses cool, blue shadows and warm, orange highlights" and "Every movie poster is a half blue, half orange images bisected by a title or main character"

Find me an example that's not from a terribly formulaic film to begin with.

Indie movies.
:rage:
I once heard this type of filmmaking described as "artificial naturalism", which seems like a far better name to me. "Indie" has always been a bit of a misnomer to me. Most of these films have absurdly high budgets compared to an actual independent film. Studios like them because they are nonetheless comparatively inexpensive to make.

but yeah I'm getting sick of all the flat dailogue and "hand-drawn" logos.

That's funny. I recall Morrowind didn't require a lot of mods to look nice. But you are totally right about Oblivion. Full voice, plus Picard and Boromir, meant that there was no room for decent and varied gameplay, but also, that fan-made mods would be incongruously dialogue-free.

"See, the monster is just about to pop out, because the music stopped."

The Two Towers: "The music just slowed down.  Somebody's going to die.  Oh hey look, a minor character!"

There's a difference between "Art just uses cool, blue shadows and warm, orange highlights" and "Every movie poster is a half blue, half orange images bisected by a title or main character"

Yes, this.  Saying "Hollywood overuses X, often pointlessly and inartfully" is not equivalent to saying "X is inherently bad."

Why didn't Frank Welker want to do that role again? Or Leonard Nimoy, for that matter.

To my knowledge, they auditioned Frank Welker first for the role, but he can't quite do the voice anymore.  Leonard Nimoy only played Galvatron in the '86 movie; was that character in any of the Michael Bay movies?

No, but I figure with the amount of digitization that they put the voices through, it might have made a difference.

Don't be fooled. We complain about Hollywood, but then we watch even worse shit on Outer Heaven.
