Yeah so I am basically the best at both being a stylish motherfucker and saving money on big-ticket items.

Heh, no argument there.

So what's the winged figure on your desk?

He's right, you know.

Mine's nicer. though. It's a Revoltech version.

So I think I will get some wall art printed. I'll get one per paycheque so I don't spend as much in one go. I'm thinking of doing this one.

I might mix it up a bit though.

Holy shit.

Okay, so: the one problem with my futon is that, because I took one with a wire mesh rather than bars, it was more prone to breaking. And break it did. It couldn't quite hold my weight if it was concentrated in one spot, so eventually the wires started breaking one by one, forming a couple of deep craters on the seat of the couch. I've been thinking about how to fix it for a while now.

JUST NOW I decided to visit work for no real reason and discovered some futon parts next to a dumpster. Seriously. Not even the whole thing. Just the frame and the arms of an obviously-used futon.
I brought them home and assembled my Frankencouch. Now I have the design that I like (the arms from my original) mixed with the frame that I need (the bar-frame from the parts I found). It doesn't transform quite as well, and it's not quite as comfortable, but it works!

Talk about lucky!

Now what should I do with the leftover bits? I'm thinking about hanging onto them, but I'm running low on space.

See that classy and assuredly expensive lamp up there? I made it out of junk I bought at the dollar store. The whole thing has less than five dollars worth of materials in it, including the bulb.

I started trying to write instructions, but they sound more and more convoluted. It's not difficult to make, but I should have taken pictures when I was making it, and I was making it up as I went along anyway.

Basically I took apart a cheap lamp and replaced the plastic ring that held the light socket in place with a square cardstock one of my own design, then found a way to suspend it in a shade made of cardstock using slots and tabs. Then I added the base (also cardstock) to keep the tabs from showing.

yeah it's pretty much one big fire hazard between the cheap electronics and essentially being made of paper but it's so stylish.

Seriously. I love it. I might make more.

I can pretty much confirm that it does not get hot enough to catch fire. It gets fucking hot, but not hot enough to catch fire.

Solid lines = edge of cardstock
dotted lines = fold here
If there's no length indicated, it's because it doesn't matter what length the piece is. The SLIGHTLY LONGER THAN 11" piece, the base, has to be big enough to wrap around the rest of the lamp. Maybe 11.25 inches or something. I don't know. It only has to be tall enough to cover the slots, too.
As for where the edges meet: they're held together with very carefully applied clear packing tape. scotch tape would be less noticeable, but I couldn't find any.

I'm not sure mixing adhesive tape, cardboard and heat is the best idea, not on account of combustion but more on account of color and durability; the tape might get brittle and yellow with time. I think I'd get the edges to stay together by piercing several holes on both sides and finding an elegant way to lace it up with string, or dark or earth-tone wool.

It does look sweet though, I might try to make one for myself.

Yeah, it's not really built to last.

...We're overcomplicating this. It's a lamp made out of garbage.
