As far as anything except beds, don't pay for any other kind of furniture, seriously. If you're in an apartment complex, cruise the dumpsters every day. People move in and move out constantly, get new furniture constantly, and their old stuff all ends up out by the dumpster. We never paid for any furniture, and we had a very nice couch and table, among other things.

If you're poor, don't have any pride about dumpster diving. Seriously. Even a cheap couch from goodwill is going to run you fifty bucks, and that fifty bucks is enough to insure you have some protein on your table for dinner all month. (even if that protein is just chicken and a few different types of beans)

I bought a futon, man. It's a bed and a couch. It's like a transformer. I have dubbed it "Nocturnus Prime".

I don't mind paying for furniture. For one thing, I figure that I want to keep this stuff for as long as I can. For another, I am a fastidiously stylish motherfucker and am more than willing to sink tons of effort into making things look good.
I get what you mean though. Just recently I got this great little table thing at a yard sale for two bucks. I'm going to sand the frame to a nice matte feel and then paint it black to match the futon I bought and the entertainment center I picked out.

I finally got the futon assembled today. I was having trouble because I didn't realize there was another hex key for the bigger bolts. I have some pictures, but I'll take more next time I go. the ones I have are with flash in the middle of the night and don't really do it justice.
I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed building this and the shelf from post 1. If there were some kind of job where I could assemble shitty department store furniture all day I would be all over that.

A futon that made the Transformers transform sound whenever it rolled out would be pretty cool.

I bought my mattress for ten dollars at this estate sale for a guy who owned a mattress store. He had a lot of extra "showroom" mattresses still wrapped up, it's awesome. It's more comfy I think because it's trying to get me to buy one. Plus it has all the prices for different mattress sizes on it. Anyway, ten dollars. And I think that was like, six years ago.

It's bigger than my current bed, which means that I can actually stretch out in it. It's a little bit softer than I'd like, but that's to be expected. There's no usual futon sensation of bars jamming into your back, either, 'cause I found one with a wire mesh frame.

Futon!

PS3 controller included for size reference.

And here's my endtable/shelf thing (I have no idea what to call this). The fakey brass look is kind of ugly, so I'll be sanding and repainting the frame at some point (the shelves pop right off). It's otherwise a nice piece, though, and it only cost two bucks.

I need to take the stupid figurines off it, though. Ugh.

Posters/prints can really class up a joint, if you put them in a fairly inexpensive frame, like so:

Assuming, of course, that your posters aren't all blacklight dragons and nekkid ladies.

That would be because it's the Picasso version.

NOOOOW I realize that my taste in bedroom furnishings is.... odd. I have a nice bed, with matching dresser, a well kept computer desk, a leather office chair, and another chair for guests if they wish to sit with me... oh and some book cases because I have a lot of books but that is it. No wall hangings, no knick knacks, no toys, nothing like that. Not even any clocks as I own a watch...

Also, the bed in the picture is the closest I could find to the one I own it's NOT exactly like it but it is extremely close, I LOVE sleigh beds, al the bedding looks the same. White with yellow accents, but I don't have that many pillows, only the four big ones, not the useless small one.

Those are Nedroid prints! I originally ordered #4, but #2 was sent to me by mistake, so Anthony Clark let me keep #2.

I am going to count just about any permanent fixture of a home as furniture for the sake of clarity and also I don't know where else to put this.

I have added two things to my home that I now realize I could never live without.

Number one: soap dish used for portable memory doodads.

Number two: Wall-mounted USB hub.

Yeah, so it's just held in place with tape and push pins. Whatever.
The point is, my desk is more clutter-free than it has ever been and I looooooove it.

What thread count are we talking here? Because I understand 600 is the sweet spot.

300. Comfy enough, though.

I really am thinking about getting wall art. I have some movie posters set aside, but I'd like something nicer, and with a frame.
What I'd ideally like to do is eventually get some of my own 24x36 vector art printed at work and then buy a couple of minimalist frames. I've estimated it down to a cost of about fifty dollars a picture, though, even with my staff discount. Not too cheap.

You know, it never occured to me that I've never made a post in this thread just to show off what I did with this place in those months without internet. Which is especially funny because that's pretty much exactly what I made the thread for in the first place.
Here's the highlight reel:

Bookshelves: $45 each; cut from $60 each. These things go on sale at Zellers all the time. They're totally worth it. I might paint them at some point.
Entertainment center: $130; cut from $200. I had my eye on this for about half a year waiting for it to go on sale. So worth it.
DVD/Blu-Ray/Game/CD shelf: $50. This is pretty nice for a cheap Wal-Mart shelf. The shelves are adjustable, too, so they suit any configuration. I need to get a CD rack and reorganize the rest.
Office chair: $75; cut from $160. This is one of the comfiest chairs I've ever sat in, and it matches the whole "black rectangles with sparse curves" thing I've got going on. It sure was hard to carry the box all the way home, though.
Computer Desk: $50; cut from $150. Not only did I get a hundred dollars off, I got this delivered for free by the store manager himself. It really pays to ask about anything you see on display. Turns out they wanted to get rid of this thing so badly (because it's so hard to store) that they would practically give it away.

Yeah so I am basically the best at both being a stylish motherfucker and saving money on big-ticket items.
