Doom
« on: July 31, 2010, 01:49:40 PM »

A question born of curiosity: Do any of you still play Doom?

Every six months or so, I get an itch and play through all of Doom 1 & 2 again. There's simply never been a greater game for just loading up on ammo and blowing great smoking holes in everything you see.

Sometimes all you want is an endless legion of cannon fodder.

Serious Sam First Encounter & Second Encounter captured the Doom feeling of killing everything that moves in fantastic ways possible pretty well.

For a while.  Now that my tastes are more... refined I feel like Serious Sam is just an endless assortment of enemy clusterfucks in a series of largish rooms, as opposed to Doom's more varied and labyrinthine environments.

Serious Sam is still good when you want to mow over shit like a moron though.

I re-play Quake 2 every year or so. I later learned that D&D designer Mike Mearls does the same.

I never get tired of Doom95 and Duke Nukem. They were the first ones I played and I... Er. I had them. I guess I lost them in the last computer migration,

Shit

I used to love me some Chex Quest. I also loved the doom multiplayer fun we had on dosbox awhile ago. I play quakelive almost every afternoon though.

Chex Quest.

Arrrgh, I so wanted that game! But we didn't have Chex in Canada. Just Shreddies.

I'm a big fan of the Doom Roguelike, which is my single favorite roguelike game and also my single favorite Doom game. Can't wait for the next version with graphics.

Bitch I am playing Doom right now

I also have started to get into WADs

I also played Doom64 through like 10 times and found everything in it

I may be slightly insane

But yeah I have always maintained that Doom is more fun and has more replay value than like, 95% of all modern shooters, including Doom3

I think the reason I enjoy Q2 so much is because it was the first PC game I ever owned (only had a mac before), so it represents the first FPS experience I really got into, both single player and multiplayer.  Plus it was actually designed for WASD+mouse controls, so it doesn't feel nearly as dated.

Well, that's a given.

I really enjoyed Doom even though I first played it several years after games with more advanced engines (Duke3D, Quake, Quake 2). It's a fun game.

I can't play anything pre-WASD, sadly. My brain just can't take it. I play through Half-Life 1 and Opposing Force periodically. Used to be annually, but now I play HL2+Episodes annually instead, perhaps hoping that someday, when I finish Episode 2, Episode 3 will be there waiting. You'd think killing combine would someday get old, but it just doesn't. They also keep making the AI better, so the last couple of times have been different.

I confess that I can only play DooM with engine mods that add WASD + mouselook.

Just remembered Megaman 8bit DeathMatch public demo was released.

Edit: Just had a 16 player match. This is a clusterfuck of fun. So many hard punch skill shots. I'm sure the novelyty will wear out soon but with 64 maps and 51 different weapons or so they are boasting the game has alot of steam yet to be seen.

Oh, I'm no purist. I use ZDoom (lets you mouseaim & mouselook) like a whore.

DOOM is easily my favorite game of all time, and I only just discovered it last year!

Have any of you played Gravity.wad?

also, first post!

Then play Chocolate Doom, zDOOM, Skulltag, or pretty much any sourceport out there!

I wouldn't imagine keyboarding in an FPS that isn't Wolf3D either!
