ATI vs nVidia
« on: August 20, 2010, 07:51:16 PM »

Apparently ATI isn't ATi any more, so my proposed subtitle, "Whose random capitalization reigns supreme?", is pretty much bunk.

Anyway, as chronicled over here, my Radeon's been giving me some crass lip.  It's only the biggest instance of several small oddities that have been cropping up lately.  The only really surprising thing is that I'm somehow surprised by it - I've never owned an AMD-branded anything that hasn't blown up spectacularly in record time.  Why I still buy these things, I have no idea.

Anyway, I figure this is one thing people have strong opinions about, since there's been nothing really to argue pointlessly over since the console wars became largely irrelevant.  I want to see a battle take place here.  I want blood.  Hop to it, Worsties.

I'll be over here chucking badly manufactured chips like live grenades.

Why I still buy these things, I have no idea.

Because apparently the newest single-slot GeForce you can possibly get is a 9800.

Oh well, I knew this was going to be a temporary measure until I could build a new box anyway.

I'm a Linux user, so nVidia.

Actually, I'm currently using an ATI card.

Which is why I have to say nVidia.

Right now? I'll say nVidia. I've been hearing bad things about ATI Drivers and some of the chips, even though the hardware is technically superior to nVidia at the moment. (The 5890 is at a better price/performance point than the 470/480, I believe)

GTX 470 user here. It doubles as a space heater!

One of the jankiest pieces of shit I've ever had the misfortune of working with was the driver for a tuner card that was manufactured by ATI. I made the petty decision thenceforth to patronize nVidia exclusively. Coincidentally, at the time, my motherboard and GPU were already of nVidia make, and neither has given me any problems, nor have I felt the need to upgrade, making this the easiest frivolous boycott ever.

I literally just built myself a new computer a few days ago with an AMD cpu and an ATI videocard (because I suddenly realized I could afford it and still have enough money left over to move when I'm healthy enough to do so), so, uh, yyyyyyeah. Everything's fine so far, though this thread is making me slightly nervous. It's my first AMD CPU but I've had some ATI cards in the past and they performed as well and for about as long as the nvidia ones I've had.

Actually, there is one little thing that's not fine. My SF4 arcade stick doesn't work on account of it expecting some bullshit Intel proprietary USB protocol on the motherboard and I'll need to get a PCI USB card if I want to use it. So that sucks pretty bad, but for a first build, if that's the worst thing that goes wrong then I'm not gonna complain too loud.

I used to be a big supporter of ATI because they WERE Canadian and good a long time ago, but it seems to me like ever since Videocards went to being predominant PCIe, ATI cards have sucked shit. I mean they work... most of the time, but when they don't, you're pretty much up shit creek where as there are a handful of nVidia manufactures you can buy their cards from that will pretty much promise to replace your card with the newest one out if you so much as grow to dislike the on card art sticker (I want the one with the hot synthetic raver chick, not the power armor guy!).

The last ATI card I had was a 2900xt (I think that's the name) and it broke 4 months after I bought it when I tried to play Left 4 Dead with it one day. I switched to an nVidia 260 card that day and I've never had a problem with it ever.

Well, I feel better at least.  Still not up to doing anything crazy like running full settings at 1080p, but I've pretty much removed any bottleneck that doesn't involve starting over with a completely new mobo.

We'll see if I fucked up the power wiring in about two weeks when my RAM suddenly pops like those snapbang things bullies always threw at you thinking they could actually hurt a person.

Isn't that just taking his screenshot from a different point in the hadouken animation?

Why I find fascinating is how the actual FPS is lower on the better card, but with a higher overall average.

Fun fact: the "DOU" part of hadouken is the least processor demanding part of the attack!?

I had particles set to Low in the earlier screenshot and High in the later one.  It's a multiplicative effect, and Metsu Hadouken is literally a giant ball of particles.

I've since set it to Mid for dicking around purposes and the frame rate drop during that attack is negligible.  SF4 in general is a bad example because it was apparently ported to PC by room full of lobotomized monkeys, but it had the advantage of already being installed on my machine.

PROTIP: If you have an ATI card and have the GPU scaling option set for your monitor*, go and turn that shit off right now.  Even if you ARE running at your desktop's native resolution, turning it off speeds things up.  How much does it speed things up?

A little bit.

* Because, for example, lower resolutions seemed skewed because you didn't realize your monitor somehow had a native aspect ratio of 16:10 even though its native resolution is 1920x1080.  What?

As long as they keep supporting current ATI products then I don't know why anyone should give a quarter crap what they call themselves.

That CPU/GPU hybrid sounds like the worst idea though, but I dunno.

They are finally putting the right name on their products after years of still calling them ATI when they weren't?

That brand names mean jack shit and maybe we shouldn't be so attached to them?

That CPU/GPU hybrid sounds like the worst idea though, but I dunno.

You haven't noticed that CPUs are basically adding more and more cores to improve performance? CPUs are cribbing design notes from GPUs and nVidia has their CUDA stuff. Even if its the worst idea, its an idea that everyone is having.
