Why, Samus is a weak-willed girl with daddy issues who breaks down at the sight of Ridley, then requires a strong, masculine man to help her through it?  Way to go Nintendo.  In later chapters you can have her be raped and then get pregnant.

I think the transparent ridiculousness of being terrified of something you've handily killed is well... internet, take it away.

The only thing I feel justified in complaining about before I play it is that Samus' voice actor wasn't Jennifer Hale.

I think I see a pattern here

yeah i can't really argue with either of these

Well, there's that, but Retro Studios got Jennifer Hale to provide Samus' lines in the Metroid Prime games, even though she had no lines. Just grunting.

And now that the character speaks, they don't give her a proven actress? Who localized this? Probably Treehouse. They're good with scripts but god damn do they need a fuller rolodex.

Actually think about that sentence for a minute.

I think that's more of a "desperately, barely killed." Interesting to note the change in tone between media, as it's ridiculous in games but good times in movies.

What if you desperately, barely killed Ridley in Super Metroid?

Also it's fucking disingenuous to demand more mature storylines from Nintendo and then when they make even a token, faltering attempt immediately compare it to Megaman, a franchise about a lovable boy robot whose plot has for the last two decades been "It was Dr. Wily after all". It would be more appropriate in this case to compare Samus to Solid Snake. If someone Snake thought he had killed many times showed up suddenly and started posing dramatically and roaring, we would be lucky if Snake only spent ten seconds gawking like a retard before deciding to finally do something about it.

Way to go Nintendo.  In later chapters you can have her be raped and then get pregnant.

The funny thing is that people are acting as if this is actually what happened.

I can't say I'm surprised though. I knew from the instant I heard Sakamoto say that he wanted to explore the character of Samus "as a woman" all those months ago that something like this was coming. You can get away with all kinds of sexist, misogynistic bullshit in the videogame industry but if it's Samus... if you DARE touch our PRECIOUS, PURE SAMUS... by God you are going to hear about it.

For fuck's sake this is Nintendo we are talking about. At least they are TRYING for once. It's like a 14 year old just poured their heart out into their first really serious short story and the internet just crumpled it up, threw it in their face and asked why don't they write a GOOD story. Or maybe they should just stick to sports.

Actually, every time Snake has seen Liquid/Revolver Ocelot, all he's really done is said "OCELOT!" or "LIQUID!" before doing something about it.

Samus was the first strong female character in gaming.

Horrible, overblown analogy inc, but this would be like if we all found out after the fact that the reason Rosa Parks refused to move from the front of the bus was because she was too lazy to move from all that fried chicken she'd just got done eating, which she bought with the unemployment check she got due to, you know, being shiftless and all.

I said it was horribly overblown, but I can't think of many other analogies. When Samus sets the tone for future strong female game protagonists, painting her as a weak coward who needs men to tell her what to do and save her life is obnoxious.

I think the simple answer is that Samus is pretty much the girl Gordon Freeman and this backlash is the equivalent of if in Episode III Gordon suddenly started talking and was all emo.

I think the gender thing is a red herring.  People didn't play Metroid to explore Samus' personality, and didn't want to.  Now that they're doing it anyway, so OF COURSE people are going to be upset with her portrayal.

It's not that Samus never talked, it's just that her personality was never developed much more than Master Chief's.  Did Samus really feel like a mother towards the baby Metroid, or did she not kill it because it wasn't hostile and could be studied?  Did she just go after it because she cared for it, or because it was dangerous in the wrong hands?  Did she cry after it died, or was she just pissed?  Was her motivation galactic peace or revenge?

I'm pretty sure most people have their own answers to these, and don't want Nintendo barging in and telling them the details they already made up in their minds.

Samus = Rosa Parks

Well played, well played.

The plot of Metroid games can be summed as "Oh, here's another batch of Metroid's and oh it was the space pirates all along".

The funny thing is that people are acting as if this is actually what happened.

It's more like the idea that weepy girl with daddy issues is one of the female cliches, along with pregnancy and rape.  It doesn't really make the character any more three-dimensional, just a different stereotype.

I don't think the majority of people on this forum are actually big supporters of the often misogynist and sexist portrayal of women in games, and it seems to a topic that other sources are eager to talk about.

Samus earned her reputation for being a character who spends most of her time completely covered, head to toe, and the first first few games did very little to capitalize on the sexuality of the main character.  And that's even with the dumb little bikini thing.

Nintendo is not run by 14 year old boys.  Maybe we act like they're better than that.  Just a thought.

It's probably been said a couple times before in this thread, but seriously, Samus kills Ridley in every fucking game.  Without the slightest sort of emotional reaction.

Why does she choose now to start pissing herself all over the place at the mere sight of the most ridiculous, duck-like incarnation of the fucker?
Because I'm still convinced that you're not playing the real Samus in this game.  Anyone want to confirm?
Otherwise, yeah, attempt at character development miserably failing and turning into full-on character derailment.

Maybe we should act like the game was developed by the same team that made Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball.

Because it was.

The best part is, Team Ninja, who everyone expected would make Samus trampy, managed to go an entire game without trying jiggle physics once, and the beloved writer/director of all the metroid games succeeded in making Samus a big dumb wimpy girl.

Nintendo is not run by 14 year old boys.  Maybe we act like they're better than that.  Just a thought.

No, no, that's the best part! Team Ninja only really controlled the gameplay and art direction - the original developer/writer of Metroid did all the plot. So Team Ninja made a game true to the style of Metroid, and Sakamoto made a game true to the style of Dead or Alive. Fantastic!

Corollary: when was the last time you cared about Ridley showing up in a Metroid game?
