Otherwise no one would pay until their house was on fire, and the fire department wouldn't have any money.

It's like insurance. You don't intend to crash your car, now tell that to the weather and every other driver in the country.

The guy's retarded for not planning to set his house on fire, so who needs firemen? But fuck the firemen for watching it happen and the Chief needs a nice firing and a permanent reassignment to Wal-Mart Greeter or something, as clearly responsibility and decision-making are a bit beyond him.

Yeah.

I think the decent people who are part of Christianity need to silently divorce themselves from the loons.

Nobody calls everybody on Brontoforumus a nut because Catloaf talks sometimes.  We should extend that same courtesy to most of the country.

Frankly I wish they'd stop being so damn silent about it.

Yeah, little to add -- I think everybody here's onboard with the notion that they should have put the damn fire out and then charged him way more than $75 for it if they wanted to send a message.

Actually, can someone explain to me why a $75 fee each year is better than and different to a tax?

The way it reads to me is that these communities don't have a fire department and they have to essentially rent out another place's fire department. So they're paying a fee to use the city's fire department in the country (which isn't zoned for the city department's coverage).

And that is different from a leveed tax how?

That's the root of my question.

Because this way you can be John Galt and not pay for it.  And because the fire department is apparently staffed entirely with sociopaths, this will happen.  That is why this is the exact hypothetical worst-case strawman scenario one would bring up to argue against having a voluntary subscription instead of an involuntary tax.

It's also a fantastic talking point against small-government fanatics but God forbid the Democrats ever have an actual campaign or accomplish anything.

I can't be too upset with the firemen. I mean, sure, they're horrible unrepentant murderers (well, dogslaughterers, but let's not mince made-up words). But this guy and guys like him made this kind of tragedy inevitable. They want to mooch their cake and eat it too. They are counting on a sense of civic duty that they themselves don't have.

Don't get me wrong. I am still upset with the fire chief and mayor's decisions here, but I have to spew enough bile on the "victim" here for trying to exploit a loophole in the social contract that I run out long before I'm done.

What the fuck?  It was just like insurance.  If you don't pay for insurance, you should get billed the full amount.  That's not a loophole, that's common sense.

Yeah, little to add -- I think everybody here's onboard with the notion that they should have put the damn fire out and then charged him way more than $75 for it if they wanted to send a message.

Because as I understand it, that shit's illegal in Tennessee. Plus it's stupid easy to fight in court with the whole 'contract under duress' thing. So basically the fire department still doesn't get paid, everyone learns they can fuck off and not pay their fee, and then there's no money to fight fires. Oops.

Understand, this area didn't have any fire service. The next town over offered them an opt-in service. If they didn't then that area got no fire service at all. They had been offering this service for 20 years, and made sure to remind everyone about paying their fee. This guy decided to try and gamble on saving 75 bucks. He lost.

The solution here is for those idiots to put pressure on the county for a fire service, but the chances they'd be able to raise taxes for that are about nil. So what's really going to happen is that the mayor and fire chief will lose their jobs because of manufactured outrage and hopefully the town will wise up and stop offering the service. Then next time a fire happens no one will be around to fight it at all.

Exactly. That is the biggest problem I have with the idiots arguing that 'its just like insurance' and meaning that the people were right to let it burn. No, that's not right. If you don't have car insurance, or hell health insurance for that matter, the paramedics don't just leave you in the car until you die. Some services simply cannot, or should not, be turned down.
