If you think the racial politics in NORTH America are fucked up, it can be fun/depressing to read about our south of the border neighbors.

Always delighted when people Dems cheer Bill Clinton, ignoring that he signed the law that made the current economic situation possible.

Well, he didn't veto the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act.

EDIT: Dammit Caithness.

You didn't have to delete that post - you were actually technically right. The 106th Congress had a Republican majority in both houses, so no, Clinton did not in fact create the legislation that repealed Glass-Steagall himself. But yeah, he did sign it into law.

Eh, I answered my own question with Wikipedia and didn't feel like editing the post to indicate it.

Heh, I thought you were coyly pointing it out rather than asking a genuine question.

Welp, that certainly was a thing that just happened.

Waiting to drink the delicious tears of the Romney campaign right now.

Obama's speech went down tonight.  A fairly detailed plan to get people back to work.  As opposed to Romney's "I'll get a billion jillion new jobs on my first day!" nonsense.  I remember berating Michelle Bachmann's claim that she'd drop gas prices as president.  The student council-style of empty promises pisses me off to no end, and it's refreshing to see a candidate lay out an actual plan.

Did he have a choice at that point?

Pegging things to people like that is very much what the Republicans want right now. Where's Bush Jr.? Where's Bush Sr, for that matter? "Personal responsibility" is a big thing in corporativist culture, because you can assign all the fault to a single named person, then shuffle people around and keep the same policies.

Well, it may be true that vetoing it would have been a dramatic confrontation that no one had the stomach for, but don't forget that Clinton's term included a lot of neo-Reagan tye thinking, with deregulation and other right-of-centre (if not outright right-wing) economic thinking. His administration very much embraced stuff like Glass-Steagall's repeal.

Forgot to watch it.  NPR's reaction seems to be that it was a bit of a disappointment and overshadowed by Clinton, but then, Romney was overshadowed by Clint Eastwood arguing with a chair so Obama pretty much wins by default.

Yeah, nobody twisted Clinton's arm on repealing Glass-Steagall, or the Telecom Act, or welfare reform, or the DMCA, or any of the other stuff he signed that placed corporations ahead of individuals.

Zara's right that Clinton was just one dude in a series of dudes who let this happen, but yeah, he definitely shares more of the blame than the Democrats like to give him.

This is interesting: Michelle Obama's speech was written at a 12th-grade level. I had no idea that you could measure someone's oratory like that.

My Senior English professor told us that major newspapers are written at a 5th Grade level, and that that's about what we should aim for as well. (So as to be understood by an audience not technically versed in our topic.)

From a fella I know who actually has the misfotune of living in MISSURRAH

Quote from: RawMeat
Posted this on FB, but we had something stuffed in our door the other day from todd aiken and it was a quote from him that said something like "the federal student loan program is the stage III cancer of socialism."

First of all, the quote is confusing?  Does he like the loan program and it's what we will use to kill socialism?  Does he not like the program and he's trying to say that it's like when you dying of cancer?  What is he trying to say here?

Second of all, you make a guffaw about rape, then apparently the next thing your advisors tell you to do is be flippant about cancer?  What is this guy doing?  This is all a big troll right?

Do you understand how terrifying the words “vibrating strap on” are for an asexual? That’s like saying “the holocaust” to a Jew.

Romney to gay parents: "I didn't know you had families."

Also a lot more.  This is some absurd, Literal Sociopath stuff.

:nyoro~n: warning purely anecdotal ahead  :nyoro~n:

My experience with devout mormons is that they tend to seem really friendly and approachable on the outside but when you actually get in close with them they tend to be toxic, toxic people. This is the case with the mormon branch of my family and pretty much every mormon family i've ever met in my personal life. I'm not really one for religion bashing, but the extremely approachable exterior is part of the mormon illusion. It's how they get people in the door, and then once you're in they're just as hateful and intolerant as everybody else. Given Romney's family history of devotion to LDS it's not super shocking to me that he is secretly a bigot. I think this is as close to the real Romney as we are ever going to get.

My anecdotal experience is a lot different than yours, but given the fact that I'm Mormon myself my concept of "toxic" people is probably very different as well.
