Yeah, given that '92 was the first election I was really aware of, and I'm from Arizona, seems like I'd have remembered McCain running.

Bush 1 DID have primary challengers in '92, though; I remember passing a Pat Buchanan rally in the Prescott town square.
I remember that too, but very dimly. I was probably JUST starting to follow international politics back then (in all likelihood, I remembered it because Buchanan was a joke in MAD at the time or something).

I think in 1992, I was just starting to realize that girls weren't icky.

I was preoccupied with defeating Gannon.

They're really sockin' it to that Spiro Agnew guy again.  He must work there or something.

Do you understand how terrifying the words “vibrating strap on” are for an asexual? That’s like saying “the holocaust” to a Jew.

the man who couldn't escape controversy in the analog tape days thinks he can run for president when everything he says and does is in the permanent, accessible record of the digital age?

Hah. This should be good.

Yeah, Newt running isn't really news; we all called it after the last election.

He's got no chance.  I know people have short memories and all, but he's the guy who shut down the government over a petty personal grudge and served his wife divorce papers in the cancer ward.  The only reason he's less radioactive than John Edwards is that people have had more time to forget him.

Simple politics.  The economy is swinging back in a positive direction, and unemployment is finally starting to shrink.  If this trend continues, then Obama will be seen in a very favorable light, and even if the Republican candidate is the dragon from Shadowrun, Obama will still win.  Better to crucify this guy than someone who's got a real chance in 2016.

My money is on Obama crushing Huckabee in 2012, with Palin acting as spoiler in most of the primaries.

I'm kind of leaning that way myself, though there's still the possibility of the Republicans thinking they can find "their Obama", be it in the governor of New Jersey or elsewhere (there are a handful of oddments who might fit the bill).

well you know if they fielded a candidate who just meekly rolled over to all the demands of the left or even pre-capitulated on important regualatory issues, i'd just be pleased as punch

Fair.

Better to crucify this guy than someone who's got a real chance in 2016.

I'm sure there are people in the Republican establishment who see things that way, but I really doubt most primary voters go out there and say "Let's pick someone who sucks so we can try again next time."

I'm kind of leaning that way myself, though there's still the possibility of the Republicans thinking they can find "their Obama", be it in the governor of New Jersey or elsewhere (there are a handful of oddments who might fit the bill).

Not a goddamn chance he wins the primaries; he favors civil unions and gun control, and opposes local law enforcement rounding up illegal immigrants.  You saw how well Giuliani did in '08 -- now picture him without 9/11 to run on.

Nice sentiment and all, but a President as effective as Obama at granting concessions to the opposition would require an opposition as effective as the Republicans at demanding them.

Saying "people will behave in a cognitive-dissonant fashion" can justify pretty much any outcome.  It's always the spoiler, sure, but there's not much point (much less fun) in speculating on anything if that's your conclusion.

The Health Care issue is absolutely toxic right now and shows no signs of not serving as the rallying cry for the Right until it's gone; whatever happens, the PPACA will still be around in 2012 so running Romney in the general election would be like running Lieberman as the Democrat in 2004.  Whatever other hypothetical merits and broad appeal the guy might have, there's just no getting around that elephant.   Why vote for a conservative who has a track record of supporting public health care when you can vote for a range of conservatives who oppose it?

Started to respond but realized I'd just be going in circles.  I've already responded to every point you make in that post, and also pointed out that I wasn't even arguing that Romney would win the primaries in the first damn place.  Not really any other place I can go with this.

So, what kind of candidate will the GOP put up next? Desiccated septuagenarian with no understand of the modern world, or possibly lunatic fringe conservative with no tolerance for the modern world? They've got a whole spectrum of people with no idea what's going on from which to choose.
