Rooting for Trump all the way.  Even Sarah Palin is limited to just making herself look stupid, but Trump... dude, if by 2013 we're not referring to the entire GOP as the "You're Fired Party" then I will be heavily disappointed.

I thought Trump was running as an independent?

I thought Trump hadn't formed the exploratory committee yet.

Well, turns out I was wrong. Republican ticket is the answer.

DAMN guys... what IS the matter with your country?!

Like, is this just the GOP deciding "Hey there is just NO way we're winning the White House in 2010"?

I think the only people left voting in the GOP primaries are rich white assholes and trolls.

ALTERNATE ANSWER: In the last Presidential election, they painted Obama as an elitist, amoral television personality who's out to take away your job.  They lost that one, so now they're running Donald Trump.

I've been saying for a while that trump running was just a publicity stunt to prop up The Apprentices' ratings with a big payoff in mind.

Trump withdraws from the election.

Quote
Some news reports cited NBC offering Trump as much as $60 million to renew his contract, and sources said that NBC had told Trump that the network had lined up three years worth of sponsors for "The Apprentice" -- but only with Trump's participation in the show.

I don't think my assumption was too far off. Well played, Donald. Well played.

I'm still writing his name in though.  Because I dare to dream.

You know what would be really funny?

If he still plans to run, only in 2016. Because he thinks he might actually win that way.

Please, Trump will never earnestly run because if he won it'd mean giving up power and taking a pay cut.

Do you understand how terrifying the words “vibrating strap on” are for an asexual? That’s like saying “the holocaust” to a Jew.

"I said something that I no longer believe to be true," isn't exactly a capital crime. Being an asshole about it is maybe worth a few heapings of scorn though.

"I made factual claims three days ago that I no longer wish to be quoted on, because they proved unpopular, and the factual claims I am making now directly contradict them" is pretty fantastically shitty.  He's not saying he was mistaken, he's saying that quoting him is "a falsehood".

I don't really know where the fuzzy lines between asshole, fantastic asshole, and improbable asshat are, so I went for the safest, broadest category. But because I am in some small part an exotherm I can translate out what he would say if Newt weren't emotionless or in any way capable of humility or empathy.

He does try to worm his way towards saying he made a mistake by saying that he makes mistakes and owns up to them. He also calls his previous statements "unfortunate".

That's almost like asking for an apology. Almost. In a dark alley, moving fast.

"Newt's a snake with no discernible personality beyond whatever decisions he feels are popular with his party," was basically just proven beyond reasonable doubt. All that's still up for debate is whether or not he's still got his nictating membranes, or if they were surgically removed so that he more closely resembles a human.

Newt Gingrich has been a professional double-speak chucklefuck for his entire career. It is his stock and trade as a politician even more so than one would expect. This latest statement doesn't even surprise me.

Honestly, it shocks me that a politician with a history so less than sparkling as Newt Gingrich could still be politically relevant. In the age of the internet, we can go back and show the world how much of an idiot is every time he opens his fat-trap, and considering how disliked he was by the majority of the country twelve years ago it is alarming that he's even getting media attention in his 'bid for the presidency'.

I think the greatest thing we can hope for in 2012 is a field of candidates like Newt who genuinely think they can win this thing in a world that would never accept them as president. Romney, the man who can't win his primary, Palin, the woman who could never win a general election, and Gingrich, a horrible little troll somewhere between column A and Column B, not fully committed to either but definately trapped in both.

Of course, this perfect storm could lead to the absolutely terrible scenario of a Ron Paul ticket in the general election, as unlikely as it is. A mobilized youth vote voting the republican ticket for a guy who thinks business needs lower taxes and regulation than they already experience could only be bad news for this country in the long run.

Trapped in the middle between trying to win the primary and trying to win the general is exactly the problem; Newt made an absolutely accurate remark about the Ryan plan that would play well among moderates in the general campaign but which freaks the base the hell out, so now he has to backpedal.

As for Paul -- I'm just glad somebody is willing to say, in a televised debate, that the drug war is stupid.  The guy's a Froot Loop and I'd never vote for him (and, if 2008 is any indication, neither would most people), but I want him to have a platform even if I disagree with at least half of what he says.
