We talked about that scream in my AP Government class as an example of how modern media has changed things when it comes to elections. Had that happened before the internet, he might have won because that would have just been forgotten about instead of used as a source for ridicule.

That's the CW, anyway.  I think Dean was already done by then; I don't think the scream is what sunk him.  He'd already lost his campaign manager and lost the first primary.

...anyway.  We'll see how the whole thing plays out.  It's clear, in context, that what Romney MEANT was "Corporations are MADE UP OF people, and when you tax corporations you're taking money out of people's pockets," which is true as far as it goes.  It's more a case of choosing unfortunate, soundbite-friendly wording.  Like Kerry's "voted for it before I voted against it", or McCain's "we could be in Iraq for a hundred years" (which he clearly disclaimed with "if the fighting stops" -- or something along those lines; I can't even find the full quote because none of the immediate Google hits include it).

It's obvious that that's what he really meant to say.  The problem is that what he actually said is closer to his real ideology.

Like Romney is going to take heat for a "Corporations are people" line when that's true according to the law.

Also, any President's 2nd term would be toast if he the economy continues to crater like it is. Imagine this: Whatever crazy psychopath gets put in the GOP candidacy spot could easily walk into the White House if thinks turn for shit in 2012.

Also consider: Why do we care if Obama loses? It's not like he wants to help us.

The best outcome would obviously be for Obama to get ousted in the primary, but the Democrats are of course as afraid of themselves as they are afraid of everyone else.

I keep hearing more and more of your fellow citizens - ones who might even be considered intelligent on any other day - go on about how "let's get this over with and crater already".

I don't think people have quite the understanding of just how bad it's possible for things to get.

So, two articles on the aggregator today.

First, tea party crony tries to gotcha Obama over his VP saying something that sounds like calling the Tea Party terrorists.

Second, Rick Perry himself calls the central bank "almost treasonous".

Forehead, meet desk.  Desk, forehead.

Now that you mention it, the Obama administration deserves a bit of credit for apparently succeeding to put a leash on the Human Gaffe Machine during these rather sensitive times.

Mitt Romney - "Corporations Are People, My Friend" - 8/11/11

I finally sat down and found the video. Yikes. This is painful.

A couple of people - including Jon Stewart - have pointed out something interesting. Ron Paul was the #2 candidate in the straw poll , and came fairly close to Bachmann's total (less than 200 votes difference).

What if Ronny will be the the GOP Candidate in 2012?

Bachmann is clearly a batshit insane fundie. It's possible she'll snag the nomination, but what if Ron becomes the GOP's "Compromise Candidate"?

I know we all debated him back in 2008 and most of us are pretty well aware of the fact that he's fucking nuts too. But he's had a good long time of pretending not to be crazy and more than a few people have been fooled. And more than a few young voters are madly in love with Ron.

Now, if the GOP's corporate-aristocratic wing maintains ultimate party control, we'll get Romney, or whoever-the-hell has already been talked about. But if Teabaggers bum rush enough of the local party machines, we could get some genuinely strrrange shit going down.

All bets are off gentlemen. All bets are off.

Typical Republicans really detest Ron Paul though, so if he gets the nomination somehow we're likely to see the final formal splintering of the GOP.  And while it'd be pretty nice to have a three-party system for once, I'd like to see a set of factions beside "evil", "stupid", and "evil and stupid".

Right. ANY of the Crazies getting the nomination assumes the grassroots machinery of the party is hijacked by the Tebaggers. At least partly.

Thing is, I don't think that's impossible.

I wouldn't say any.  Perry, Palin, and for some reason Bachmann seem to have general GOP approval, despite-or-because-of being straight-up padded wall Constitutionally-challenged zealots.  Hell, of those three, Bachmann is actually the most reasonable simply on the basis of not having made any immediately memorable comments insinuating a desire to actually murder her political opponents.

The Pauls are simply just disliked among the GOP general though, because they don't fall into goosestep behind anybody.  It's this rare and delicate flower of being one of the few people who votes based on his own beliefs rather than his party's that made Ron a darling among college students for a brief period in 2008, until everyone realized that it meant he was pretty much assured to disagree with them about something.
