Now taking bets on the next flavour-of-the-week.

Er, you mean after Newt?

Assuming Huntsman will never get attention from the base and Paul will never get attention from the media, I think that just leaves Santorum.

And nobody wants that flavour.

Why won't the base pay attention to Huntsman? Just because he's running as a moderate? Don't they know that the candidate closest to the center is most likely to win the general election? Wouldn't they rather have a President Huntsman than another term of President Obama?

Are you kidding?  Obama's like the best thing that's ever happened to them.

I almost think they're looking for an alternative to Romney because Romney is too damned electable.

Yeah.  Perry's was an overblown brainfart; Cain's is object evidence that (1) he does not know anything about an important recent foreign policy story beyond the most basic details, (2) he doesn't know what his constituency wants to hear, and (3) he isn't even good at bullshitting.

Now taking bets on the next flavour-of-the-week.

Er, you mean after Newt?

As desperate as the spin machine is, I don't know that they're going to pick up on Newt. He's too much of a known quantity and has too much experience trying to play them for his own purposes (not necessarily succeeding, but he's been there).

Also, that Cain link doesn't work up here. Summary/alternate YouTube Link? (There's an 8 minute Cain vs. Stewart clip, but wasn't sure if it's supposed to be a moment in there?)

Also, he's a non-Christian from Massachusetts who passed socialized medicine.

Why won't the base pay attention to Huntsman? Just because he's running as a moderate?

Well, yes.  If they voted for moderates they wouldn't be the base.

Don't they know that the candidate closest to the center is most likely to win the general election?

An oversimplification.  If that were true then President Kerry would be finishing his second term and there would be zero Tea Partiers in Congress.

Wouldn't they rather have a President Huntsman than another term of President Obama?

Well, yes, and they're going to fall in line behind Romney when he gets the nomination just like they fell in line behind McCain and Dole.  But in the meantime, they'd rather not see him nominated.

Huntsman doesn't even enter into the equation.  As Stewart put it, he's for the people who like Mitt Romney but think he has too much name recognition.  He may have his day, but not this year.

As desperate as the spin machine is, I don't know that they're going to pick up on Newt.

Dude, they've been pushing him for a WEEK.  He's the third damn headline on Google News right now.

He's too much of a known quantity and has too much experience trying to play them for his own purposes (not necessarily succeeding, but he's been there).

Well, no shit.  But we're talking about people who spent like two months talking about DONALD TRUMP.

Also, that Cain link doesn't work up here. Summary/alternate YouTube Link? (There's an 8 minute Cain vs. Stewart clip, but wasn't sure if it's supposed to be a moment in there?)

Probably.

Short version is, they ask him if he agrees or disagrees with Obama's handling of Libya and he stammers, gives a very long pause, states the most basic facts of the situation (that we supported the rebels in ousting Ghadafi), stammers some more, and tries to bullshit like he knows the answer -- you know how people do, with long, convoluted sentences while they're gathering their thoughts?  But the thoughts never quite come; he's clearly reaching for what the Tea Party wants him to say but he doesn't know what that is.

Again, Perry's flub is minor by comparison.

Both of them have shown a marked inability to think off-script, which begs the question how the fuck did Perry ever get elected to anything?

(Cain, of course, never was elected to anything.)

Fair enough, but I usually don't consider the trend to be anything other than a flash in the pan until I actually see some mention of it up here.

I guess we'll see where this goes - if he makes it to week two, with Cain firmly falling on his face in ratings (TV ratings - not opinion polls), then I expect we'll find out if the Foxcrowd really is desperate enough to go back to Newt (wouldn't be a surprise).

Bush got a second term.  As President.

In a Democratic primary, so would I, in a heartbeat.  And it seems very unlikely he'd run as a Republican.

Cain: I will be elected to lead, not to read.

This shit can't be real. There cannot be a fucking bottom of the barrel deeper and dumber than George W Bush. But there it fucking is. You get to the bottom of the barrel and there's a little latch and surprise, a whole new barrel.

Is it wrong to want Cain to win the primary (impossible, I know) just to watch the heads of vast swaths of the country explode simultaneously when they collectively realize there's no white guy to vote for for President?

Republicans maybe, but to everybody else it'd be Obama vs Older, Stupider, Less Likable Black Man.

NYT Mag's Rebecca Traister gives a quite good article called Heaven is a Place Called Elizabeth Warren.

It's coming from the same place I do: I love Warren, but the last time I put my faith in a political neophyte with a populist message I got burned.  (Hell, the last two times, if you count Edwards*, but that's a different story.)

I think she stands good odds of winning Kennedy's seat, particularly if Rove continues his spectacularly ill-conceived I-don't-know-what-a-Massachusetts-is campaign against her.  And I guess that's where the rubber meets the road; we'll see what she accomplishes if she gets that far.

(* Incidentally, I forgot to include Edwards in my recent hierarchy-of-political-sex-scandals post.  He ranks one notch lower than Gingrich, because when he cheated on HIS cancer-stricken wife, he wasn't also actively campaigning to impeach a President for having an extramarital affair.)

(EDIT: A correction: the wife Newt served with divorce papers when she was in the hospital with cancer is not the same wife he was cheating on while he was working to impeach Clinton.  I regret the error and take full responsibility for my inability to keep track of Newt's multiple extramarital affairs.)

"Republicans" is not an insignificant demographic. Not quite as good as getting the whole country to :scanners:, but I'll take what I can get.
