Fine as far as it goes, but the fact remains that everybody but the GOP base likes Clinton.

And even assuming a successful rewrite of history, Newt is a grade-A prick.  It's been, what, six months since his entire campaign staff quit because he went on vacation instead of running for President?  That's the effect he has on people who ALREADY LIKE HIM AND THINK HE SHOULD BE PRESIDENT.

You think McCain's sneers and condescension hurt him in the '08 debates, well, consider a more partisan, less restrained version of McCain.

Course, that's precisely the kind of shit that APPEALS to the GOP base.  I'm sure I've described primaries as a minmax exercise in the past.

Getting closer, but Newt's got less charisma and moral consistency.

Interestingly, Rorschach is today's Republican party more than he's ever been:

No compromise, even in the face of (financial)Armageddon.

The more I think about it, a Gingrich candidacy wouldn't just help Obama, it would legitimately hurt the Republican Party in general and the Tea Party wing in particular.  Gingrich puts a face on everything that is ugly about the modern GOP; he personifies ego, selfishness, and pettiness.  He's to blame, as much as anybody, for the current toxic nature of political discourse.

It'd be like nominating Limbaugh.

I still don't see it happening; Huckabee carried Iowa and burned out in a hurry.  I think Gingrich is just the latest and last not-Romney flavor-of-the-month.  But his getting the nom isn't impossible.

There's a big difference, though: Rorschach had personal principles that he could never compromise on. The Republican just won't compromise on anything, period, even if it's in their interest. Anything that wasn't concocted by the Dysfunctional GOP Machine is trash and is to be discarded.

Indeed; August has been arguing for some time that the unifying ideal behind the modern Republican Party (or at least its supporters) isn't actually based on policy, it's based on pissing off liberals, and his latest strip argues that that's why Gingrich is the latest darling: because he's an asshole.  And that that's the biggest reason Santorum never had a shot: his views are pure red meat, but he's not an attack (man-on-) dog.

I've actually seen "Annoy a Liberal" as a bumper sticker.

In fact I've seen it on a Prius.

Which didn't annoy me so much as confuse me.

So yeah, even though he hasn't really made any moves against the press (that I know of), Paul is too much of a wildcard for them to endorse.  Problem is this is turning out to his advantage - when the man gets on the podium and points out that the headlines from the straw poll read "Bachmann First, Pawlenty Third" he gets to present himself as the race's best-kept secret.

WSJ: Gingrich Leads, Romney Takes Third, in Closely Watched Iowa Poll

:8D: Here we go agaaaaain~
(everybody laughs like idiots; fade to black & roll credits)

Oh for...

Fergus Cullen, a former GOP state chair in New Hampshire, says that because Gingrich represents a threat to everyone in the Republican field – including former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, and Texas Rep. Ron Paul – Romney will get help.

Without getting into how environmentalism seems to be one area that the left and right can find the most common ground on, when it comes down to it, if you're a rich dude looking to buy a sensible new car, hybrid vehicles simply get better mileage. Now, most people don't connect the trade off behind the overall cost of the car and the lower cost of driving it, but I don't think that kind of cost trade off analysis is something a lot of red-staters are good at.

There's also a chance that they happen to be a commie like me, and we like annoying liberals, as well.

Heheh, of course, most of the Democratic Party still thinks Gingrich is completely unelectable, and a lot are aware of the whole "rally against the Liberals" behavior of the GOP, so I wonder if Pelosi's not doing Newt a "favor" on purpose by surfacing and launching missiles against him.  Get everyone on that side of the aisle rallying around their biggest albatross, and let him drag them all down like the anchor he is.

...man, I've clearly been in the desert too long.  I think I might be getting oceansick.

Thought had occurred to me as well.

The latest G.O.P. threat to Obama: Extend the Bush tax cuts or we won't nominate Newt Gingrich.

Rick Perry's new ad on Youtube has been up less than 48 hours, and it's creeping up on 50,000 dislikes.
