My anecdotal experience is a lot different than yours, but given the fact that I'm Mormon myself my concept of "toxic" people is probably very different as well.

I admittedly was speaking from my own experience. I have some mormon family members who have been pretty cool about the faith with me but I will never forget the time that my grandmother disrespected my mormon uncle in his home and he ordered his children to lay down in front of the wheels of the car so that if we left my grandmother would be killing her own grandchildren.

Obviously there is going to be extremists in any religion. I am making the argument that Romney is probably an extremist. I just find the extremists are especially hard to spot with Mormonism as their religion is so focused on mission and proselytizing. Given that they're trying to get people to come in the door rather than simply repent, I have found them to be hard to gauge on the unpleasantness scale until I begin to know them very well.

Our generation is also pretty better about it. I love my cousins, they're awesome people. But their parents are loony as fuck.

My experience with (devout) Mormons is that, like most people in deep with ideology, they are unable to see exactly what the hell is so fucked up about their world.

My experience with (wealthy) Mormons is that they know this full well.

An American ambassador was murdered and Mitt Romney trips over himself to politicize it

He then does a Q&A to maximally politicize the issue afterwards and portray Obama as weak on national security. All based on a misinterpretation of the timeline.

Analysts are calling it a 'blunder'. Some people are saying this may be the end of the Romney campaign altogether.

Too wordy.  "An American ambassador was murdered and Mitt Romney tripped over himself to turn it into a political gain" works better.

With the emphasis that that statement is, if anything, playing down what actually happened.

Yeah, you're right.

More analysis. People seem to be in agreement that this is a hell of a dumb move by the R-money camp.

Some people smile when they're nervous.

I'm not trying to defend Romney, and I don't think he's a nice guy, but I think it's a bit much to assume he's taking pleasure in this.

If this isn't proof that Romney's handlers and campaign manager have no control over him whatsoever I don't know what is. Nobody could possibly think this was the best move to make, politically. Even republican pundits and politicians are flabbergasted.

Minutes after the speech ended (Hilary did hers simultaneously) McCain posted a tweet praising one of the speeches. It wasn't Romney's:

Quote
John McCain ‏@SenJohnMcCain
Just watched an excellent and moving stmt by Sec. Clinton- just the right message and tone.

He had a smug smirk on his face for the entire speech. He walked out with swagger. It's pretty clear that Romney thought that he just won the election with this tragedy.

"The Next President of the United States" isn't "some people." To withstand the level of scrutiny he has to this point and be unable to control a smirk at a time of tragedy? Romney just royally shit the bed on acting like he could lead the country, not for the smirk alone, but that's just the cherry on top.

Also Shinra you're understating it. He walked out in the middle of the conference because he was tired of the reporters asking him tough questions, where tough is defined as "not softball."

Okay, well, self-satisfaction aside: A U.S. diplomat just got murdered in Libya.

I suspect the Presidential election to become a mere backdrop to the shitstorm that's about to follow.  If Romney just tossed the campaign off a cliff (he did), it's not because people will question his general competence; it's because nobody will want to have the man ANYWHERE NEAR the Libya situation in the next two months.

Romney campaign's talking points memo leaked to CNN - they are doubling down on this. I can't say I expected them to try to walk this back, but wow.

It's worth noting this was leaked within hours of the press conference. Loyalty is officially out the window at the Romney campaign HQ.

I'm only going to engage in self-satisfaction one more time to post this:

John. Fucking. Sununu.

Well, I mean, I hope he gets called on to officially suspend his campaign, and not just because I don't like him as a candidate.  We just don't need this bullshit right now.

To be fair, the other guy said "Justice WILL be done." and left it at that.

Really though, if we're flying into that mess either way, I'm riding with the guy who saw bin Laden get iced, thanks.
