I just want to stress the point that I only disagree with the moral argument for vegetarianism; I tend to agree as far as practical concerns are involved, but don't follow the doctrine due to apathy and some nonstandard nutritional needs (read: protein is keeping me alive.)

I actually like tofu in moderation.  :hurr: Go figure!

I dunno though, I don't feel bad about eating pig. But I do feel a little bad about eating most marine mammals. I feel a little bad when it seems so plausible that an animal I'm eating today might be playing chess only a thousand generations from now.

Then again, I'm just surprised at how many creatures seem to check themselves out in a mirror.

Can't, too many nuts and I start developing sores in places you don't want sores.

Also, beans other than soy are pretty great too.

I generally figure apes and dolphins are out, but I don't think either are particularly tasty or nutritious anyway. Lotsa gristle and blubber.

I think the only animal we don't already eat regularly that tastes at all delicious is snake.  And ostrich, but those things are a bitch to farm.

My mom ate dolphin when she went to Brazil(iirc), many years ago.  Feels very guilty about it, but also says it was amazing.

All taste pretty much like chicken to me.

Yes, sometimes that's true. Though it might mean I should just smoke less.

Sadly, out of about thirty million extant species of plants and animals on earth, we only commonly consume a few dozen. We have to do our part to eat more of that shit.

Was her lack of intelligence due to her partaking of the flesh, or her many days, weeks, or years not delving into the wonders of pig belly?

Let's go ask Mr. Turtle!

I meant kiwi as in the bird, but I could eat a fake Australian for hours.

5) They didn't have the potential for much greater cognitive ability
I'm not into animal (or 3-year-old) rights or anything, but Steven M Wise's Drawing the Line was an interesting enough read about animal cognition that I actually got through (almost all of) it.  It takes more of a legal approach than a moral/ethical one, revolving around a definition practical autonomy, and brushes a bit on what sort of capabilities various species of differing complexity possess.

I'm not sure it really deserves the 5 star user rating it has, but I'm just mentioning it in case anyone following the thread is interested in stuff of its sort.  Though if they are, they're probably better versed on what's on the related to/must-read list than I am.

"We put the meat on the pole, not on the plate," says the proprietor of Portland's first vegan strip club.

Apparently it also features vegan and vegetarian dancers, for guys who dig the pasty, anemic look.
