Kyle Baker has put most of his creator-owned catalog up for free.

They're posted as Picasa galleries, so you can't (easily) download them, but still, good for him.

I own paper copies of You Are Here and Nat Turner and I think I've read a couple more (The Bakers, one or two others). A lot of those are pretty great books and Nat Turner is flat out excellent.

Mark Andrew Smith puts the first two issues of Sullivan's Sluggers online for free, advertises it on Pirate Bay

It's got art by James Stokoe, so I really shouldn't need to add anything more to this convince you. But if you didn't get a grab at it when it was on Kickstarter, or aren't familiar with it, now is your chance.

As someone who kickstarted it and was promised it be a KS exclusive before he said he'd sell it in shops after it was quite a bit after everyone already paid, I'm torn.

On one hand, I like the internet friendly approach.  On the other, really dude?

Marvel's giving away free issue #1's of 700 different comics.

Or they were, until the traffic took down both the Marvel store and Comixology.  We'll see if they extend the length of the deal, seeing as how most people haven't actually been able to access it.

Pirates, as always, are unaffected.

Yep.

And what consistently mystifies me about stories like this?  They could have just distributed the files with BitTorrent!  BT is not only immune to outages based on high demand, it actually works BEST in situations of high demand.

What's the difference between having a DD site and a server set as a dedicated seed? From a performance standpoint, I mean. Cycles wasted on the tracker?

An order of magnitude fewer direct connections (and less bandwidth, but that's not as important for the purposes of stability).

That's the Torrent's Worst Case?
Where the seed serves one peer, which does not seed itself and is replaced by another equivalent peer?

I'm sorry if I'm mis-using my terms here. I haven't read up on torrents.
Setting the wiki entry aside for now. I should be productive again.

I guess the worst case is where you only have one seed and no sharers.

...which is what you have with direct download, all the time, by default.

I may be missing something technical here but I don't think there's a real drawback to the original seed.  There may be a drawback to the recipient if there are no other seeds and the original never anticipated a DD level of load.

I just learned that Comixology also started up a new service recently called "Comixology Submit" where independent publishers can sell their comics on the platform. I don't think it's any coincidence that the two happened so close to each other.

Steve Niles sale at Comixology; lots of freebies and 99-cent issues.

This appears to be the last day of the sale; I'd have mentioned it sooner if I'd heard about it sooner.

Also: Bleeding Cool has compiled a list of 525 free comics on Comixology.  I don't know if that's all of them but it's a pretty good list.

Bandette #1, celebrating its Eisner nomination.

I haven't read it yet but it's drawn by Colleen Coover and published by Monkeybrain, Chris Roberson and Allison Baker's company, and looks like plenty of fun.

Best day of the year. If anyone finds themselves in Central Pennsylvania, I'll be slinging free pulp at the Comic Swap at Penn State.

The free Tick is pretty great but makes a basic storytelling mistake in not introducing the supporting cast.  I know who Tick and Arthur are, but Bumbling Bee and Rubber Ducky aren't referred to by name until pages 12 and 13, and they NEVER say Cod's full name, unless Cod IS his full name.

I know there's a general backlash against techniques like the 1960's era of characters all addressing each other by name on the first couple of pages, and the 1990's method of just having each character's name appear in a caption when they first appear, but there are still ways to integrate it organically in the story.  Arthur addresses Bumbling Bee as "Bee" several times in the first few pages, and she later tells Cod she wants to "meet up with Ducky".  Those could trivially be changed to the characters' full names without seeming out-of-place.

And again, Cod is referred to as "Cod" exactly once in the story, and I assume that's one more shortened name.

For all that it's still a perfectly fun Tick comic.  Arthur gets a vacation, Tick gets an undersea adventure, there are hijinx with the other heroes, and eventually Arthur gets to save the day.  It's enjoyable.  I would buy more Tick comics if they didn't charge seven bucks for 20 pages.  And I heartily recommend the Complete Edlund collection, even though it IS really pricey for its quality of materials.  ($35 for B&W on newsprint -- but you will definitely get $35 worth of enjoyment out of it.  I keep meaning to do a full-writeup of it.)

Haven't read the backup stories or the prose sections yet.

DC, of course, has spent the past two years on a big relaunch, where its continuity is fundamentally changed and all the characters are redesigned.

And so, for the Free Comic Book Day issue of Superman, which is likely the first Superman comic many people have picked up in years, if not ever...

...they reprint the Donner/Johns/Kubert issue from, what, 2006, 2007, that introduces Chris Kent.

Lois still knows Superman is Clark Kent.  They're still married.  His costume still has red trunks on it.  And the story is best-known for the introduction of a character who was written out pretty soon after, who nobody really remembers, and who sure as hell doesn't exist in the New 52.

But we can't have Stephanie Brown appear in Smallville, because that might confuse people.
